Modern Daybeds

MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Upholstered "X-Rays" Daybed, Alain Gilles
Located in Geneve, CH
Upholstered "X-Rays" daybed, Alain Gilles Dimensions: 185 W x 86 D x 40 H cm Materials: Black steel structure, black mat ash handrail, fabric Custom fabric and colors available X-ray is a family of comfortable upholstered pieces: a sofa (2, 3, 4 seaters), a daybed and an armchair. Instead of hiding the structures under fabric, Alain Gilles literally X-rayed the welcoming and comfortable traditional sofa to create a graphic and sculptural range of seats for the home and the office. As a result, the pieces are captivating both from the front and from the back. Design as a second life. After studying Political Sciences and Marketing Management, Alain Gilles went on to work in the international financial world for 5 years. But one has to live his own life. So, thanks to the moral support of his wife, he went back to studying Industrial Design in France. He opened his own studio in late 2007 in order to pursue his own dreams and develop his personal approach to product design, furniture design, art direction and scenography. "Leeon" Velvet Covered Daybed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba for Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Leeon" is an elegant daybed, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba and manufactured by Driade, featuring a back in flexible cold-cured polyurethane foam working with metal inserts, seat with elastic straps and structure in painted steel and wood, padding in polyurethane foam and painted aluminum legs in black or white colors. Available in a sampler of fabric or leather fixed covers. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 68.1", W. 35.4", H. 31.8", Seat H. 16.1" Ludovica and Roberto Palomba propose a collection of upholstered pieces of design recalling some distinctive features of aesthetics coming from the late 80s, such as the die-cast aluminum pointy supports (elegantly painted in this case) and the checkerboard motif of the upholstery. The result is a refined project, complete with different pieces of design such as sofa, daybed, bench and bed, and meant to be used both in private and public spaces. LUDOVICA and ROBERTO PALOMBA, architects, work and live in Milan. They founded Palomba Serafini Associati in 1994. Serge Haelterman Functional Pop Art Modular Seating Jzuz Living Elements Belgian
By JZUZ Livingelements, Serge Haelterman & Steven Brouns
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Unique and out of production functional seating elements by Belgian designers Serge Haelterman and Steven Brouns. These elements are made of high end foam covered with an elastic coated fabric that can be cleaned easily and feels like a latex rubber. This seating elements can be turned into a sofa, bed or seating island with your own imagination. NIKE purchased several of these JZUZ Elements for their shops in Europe Measures: Green element 82.67inch/210cm x 27.55inch/70cm x Height 27.55inch/70cm Orange element 55.12inch/140cm x 55.12inch/140cm x Height 27.55inch/70cm Orange block element 27.55inch/70cm x 27.55inch/70cm x Height 27.55inch/70cm I taken this text from Serge Haelterman's website: Right after I graduated as an Industrial designer back in 1999 I started a furniture brand together with my friend Steven Brouns. We felt there was a need for a new type of furniture that was able to adjust itself to the ever changing life situations. Hence the name Livingelements. The name JZUZ was conceived because we believed we had to spread the message of this new kind of living. The first elements were a u and a square shaped seating element. They were in fact a deconstruction of a regular sofa. This deconstruction led to a whole range of new possibilities. When combining both elements you could construct all kinds of different 'living' setups. After this followed the room devider...
