MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

"Leeon" Velvet Covered Daybed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba for Driade
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Leeon" is an elegant daybed, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba and manufactured by Driade, featuring a back in flexible cold-cured polyurethane foam working with metal inserts, seat with elastic straps and structure in painted steel and wood, padding in polyurethane foam and painted aluminum legs in black or white colors. Available in a sampler of fabric or leather fixed covers. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 68.1", W. 35.4", H. 31.8", Seat H. 16.1" Ludovica and Roberto Palomba propose a collection of upholstered pieces of design recalling some distinctive features of aesthetics coming from the late 80s, such as the die-cast aluminum pointy supports (elegantly painted in this case) and the checkerboard motif of the upholstery. The result is a refined project, complete with different pieces of design such as sofa, daybed, bench and bed, and meant to be used both in private and public spaces. LUDOVICA and ROBERTO PALOMBA, architects, work and live in Milan. They founded Palomba Serafini Associati in 1994. They received many international awards such as Compasso D'Oro, Elle Decoration International Design Award, Red Dot, Design Plus, Good Design Award, German Design Award. Outdoor Royal Botania Tuskany Daybed

Frame: Teak and olefin fiber Teak We only use carefully selected, fully grown teak, which is harvested in accordance with the strictest environmental standards. The reason for its generally commended durability is the high levels of natural oils it contains. The resulting minimal moisture absorption prevents warping which gives it great stability. Moreover, the wood is extremely resistant to the influences of chemicals, as well as against attacks by vermin. Olefin fiber Olefin fibre is a synthetic fibre made from polyethylene. The advantage of this fibre is its strength, color fastness and comfort. Also it is very resistant to staining and different weather conditions. Includes roof, seat/back cushions, and curtain set...
