About the Item

The Wassily Chair, also known as the Model B3 chair, is a famous and iconic piece of modern furniture design. It was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925-1926 while he was working at the Bauhaus, a renowned German art school that played a significant role in shaping modern design and architecture. The chair's design is characterized by its minimalist, geometric forms. The frame consists of a series of interconnected straight and curved steel tubes that form the base, armrests, and backrest of the chair. Breuer was inspired by the frame of a bicycle when designing the Wassily Chair. He aimed to create a lightweight and functional piece of furniture using tubular steel, much like the lightweight and efficient structure of a bicycle frame. The chair was originally known as the Model B3 chair, but it later became known as the Wassily Chair because it was believed to have been designed for Wassily Kandinsky, a fellow Bauhaus instructor and a prominent abstract painter. However, there is some debate over whether Kandinsky ever owned or used the chair. Lovely piece in rare olive canvas material. Beautiful patina on canvas. Chromed structure in excellent condition. Minor tarnishing.
