References: Ernst Schwadron Interiors Magazine Rena Rosenthal May 1942 Interiors 1942-05: Vol 101 Issue 10 pp. 20-23 Bard Research Forum: Knoll Before Knoll Textiles, 1940–46 by Paul Makovsky Ernst Schwadron, born Vienna, July 1, 1896, died Lenox Hill, NY, USA, March 3, 1979, began his career at his family's acclaimed ceramics and tile company, Bruder Schwadron of Vienna. Earnst started working as an architect in Vienna in the late 1920s, focusing on apartment interiors and furniture design. His signature interior designs, furniture and lamps were typical for the restrained Viennese modernism of the early 1930s. By the mid 1930s Schwadron was well established as an architect and his works were published frequently in European architectural and design magazines. He fled Vienna in 1938 and settled in New York where he worked as chief designer for the interior design company Rena Rosenthal Design, where he also met his second wife Gladys. He established a workshop in the early studio of Illya and Vladimir Kagan, and Schwadron's organically curvaceous forms exerted a strong influence on the young designer. He later opened his own showroom, Ernst Schwadron Inc. on Madison Avenue for 30 years.
