DeSede Ds-747/04 Multifunctional Sofa in Black Leather Seat and Back Upholstery
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Once upon a time, there was a master saddler with his mind set on taking bulky, thick leather and using his perfect craftsmanship to make it comfortable and cozy. For genera-tions, the legacy of what Ernst Lüthy created when he established de Sede in the 1960s has been reflected in DS-747: form follows function. Be it sitting, sleeping, dining or relaxing – thanks to its essence of excellence, this all-rounder offers optimum functionality: with a few easy flicks of the wrist, the armrests can be tilted independently of each other and the soft seating surfaces enlarged. The exposed back lends DS-747 its lightness as a small sculpture with a high function – a sofa created to sit not on but in. A marvel in three dimensions, DS-747 is perfectly suited for small spaces or city apartments. If visitors spontaneously decide to stay longer, this elegant yet compact sofa offers an outstand-ing place to sleep – the armrests can be folded down with a few very easy flicks of the wrist. A sophisticated mechanism can be used to enlarge the seating surface, while the deliberately exposed back offers a glimpse into the functions of DS-747. The multifunctional sofa...

Ds 80/91 Daybed with 1 Side Cushion with Beech Frame
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Originally launched in 1969, the DS-80/91 over 50 years later is still considered the pinnacle of high end leather manufacturing. This piece is also as sustainable as it is supreme, as the entire patchwork is created from a single hide. Made with functionality in mind, this piece can also double as a lounge sofa and can be placed anywhere from a living room to a foyer. Born out of a small workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland, de Sede has maintained a passion for over 55 years to transform the finest leather into seating furniture. Striking by design, a piece from de Sede is the epitome of functionalism and fashion. De Sede DS-21/203A Two-Seat Modular Sofa in Hazel Leather by Stephan Hürlemann
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Opulent elements for modular use. The architectural structure of DS-21 is created by a metal frame that surrounds individual cushion volumes, seemingly carrying them effortlessly. The opulent elements counteract the clear lines of the frame. They function as modules that can be relocated. DS-21 comes in different upholstery combinations, with leather or fabric covers, and in three different frame widths with matt black or high-gloss chrome-plated metal legs. An armchair rounds out this family of seats. The DS-21 range is complemented by coffee tables and side tables with glass tops in different versions. This sculpture looks as if it has always stood there. A statement, essentially: I’ve been here forever. And yet: the proportions seem fresh and new, unused and inviting, Classic and modern. DS-21 is the work of Stephan Hürlemann. The Appenzell native studied architecture at ETH Zurich and was the partner of designer Hannes Wettstein, after whose death in 2008 he took over as creative director of the world-renowned Zurich studio. Hürlemann remains true to the Classic style. With the seating landscape for De Sede, he has created a floating sculpture that flirts with the lightness of being...

Shop Unique Sofas on 1stDibs: Find Mario Bellini Sofas, Togo Sofas, Vladimir Kagan Sofas and Other Seating for Sale

Black leather, silk velvet cushions, breathable bouclé fabric — when shopping for antique or vintage sofas, today’s couch connoisseurs have much to choose from in terms of style and shape. But it wasn’t always thus.

The sofa is typically defined as a long upholstered seat that features a back and arms and is intended for two or more people. While the term “couch” comes from the Old French couche, meaning to lie down, and sofa has Eastern origins, both are forms of divan, a Turkish word that means an elongated cushioned seat. Bench-like seating in Ancient Greece, which was padded with soft blankets, was called klinai. No matter how you spell it, sofa just means comfort, at least it does today.

In the early days of sofa design, upholstery consisted of horsehair or dried moss. Sofas that originated in countries such as France during the 17th century were more integral to decor than they were to comfort. Like most Baroque furnishings from the region, they frequently comprised heavy, gilded mahogany frames and were upholstered in floral Beauvais tapestry. Today, options abound when it comes to style and material, with authentic leather offerings and classy steel settees. Plush, velvet chesterfields represent the platonic ideal of coziness

Vladimir Kagan’s iconic sofa designs, such as the Crescent and the Serpentine — which, like the sectional sofas of the 1960s created by furniture makers such as Harvey Probber, are quite popular among mid-century modern furniture enthusiasts — showcase the spectrum of style available to modern consumers. Those looking to make a statement can turn to Studio 65’s lip-shaped Bocca sofa, which was inspired by the work of Salvador Dalí. Elsewhere, the furniture of the 1970s evokes an era when experimentation ruled, or at least provided a reason to break the rules. Just about every area of society felt a sudden urge to be wayward, to push boundaries — and buttons. Vintage leather sofas of that decade are characterized by a rare blending of the showy and organic.

With so many options, it’s important to explore and find the perfect furniture for your space. Paying attention to the lines of the cushions as well as the flow from the backrest into the arms is crucial to identifying a cohesive new piece for your home or office.

Fortunately, with styles from every era — and even round sofas — there’s a luxurious piece for every space. Deck out your living room with an Art Deco lounge or go retro with a nostalgic '80s design. No matter your sitting vision, the right piece is waiting for you in the expansive collection of unique sofas on 1stDibs.
