French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Mahogany Desk
Located in Baton Rouge, LA
A wonderful mid-19th century French Louis XVI style mahogany desk hand-crafted in France circa 1850. A beautiful, smooth top of flame mahogany is surrounded by a three quarter decorative brass gallery following down to two open center storage spaces and four roomy drawers in a removable riser. This top piece easily lifts off the base for transport and is affixed with circular, recessed brass escutcheon plates surrounded by Louis XVI style brass bellflower pulls. A second three quarter brass gallery surrounds the writing surface which measures 30” H and is adorned with new black leather with gold gilt tooling. Two sliders on each side of the writing surface are covered with the original leather and extend the desk out 17 ¾” on either side. The apron showcases the handsome veneer and gorgeous colors of the wood and contains four drawers of the same design that open easily. The right side has a singular large drawer that opens to contain a notched wooden privacy slide and a four compartment pull out wooden tray for excellent organization. The whole is raised on regal turned, tapering fluted legs with brass capitals and capped feet. Showcasing an attractive polished mahogany, this desk has fine features, many storage options, and is fully finished on all sides making it a supremely practical piece. Be sure to view all the images to see every detail of this unique antique desk.

Antique Desk, Carved, Empire, Tooled Leather Top, Elegant, 19th C., 1800's!!
Located in Austin, TX
Elegant Antique Desk, Carved, Empire, Tooled Leather Top, 19th C., 1800's!! 19th Century Empire Caved Desk With Tooled Leather Top, Height: 28 in. by Width: 52 in. by Depth: 22 in. Wear and imperfections commensurate with being moved, age and use. t15 As per Worth Point, Empire style furniture tends to be massive in scale, imposing, and abundantly adorned, reflecting Napoleon's magnificence. Empire furniture has simple geometric shapes with distinct angles. Decorations and motifs are symmetrically placed on both sides. Like Neoclassic style furniture, ancient Roman and Greek elements strongly influence Empire pieces. The Empire style furniture is characterized by war and the classical world—coat of arms, trophies, and spires became common motifs. Roman mythological themes frequently appeared in furniture designs such as eagles, winged lions, and deities. These were commonly seen as chair armrests and table legs. Unique motifs that appeared during the Empire period were initials "N" and "J" encircled by laurel wreaths. Bees, swans, bows, and arrows, and the lyre came into fashion prominent. The furniture uses imported dense woods, such as mahogany and ebony. Empire style chairs are stiff and sculptural. Typical Empire style chairs include square, rectangular, or rolled-over chair backs. The Empire tables are bulkier and more circular than neoclassical. Tables of this period range from massive dining tables to small guéridon tables...

Chiffonniere, Writing Table Walnut, Louis XV Style, Period : 19th Century
Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
Adorable little writing case in walnut with inlay, Louis XV style.  It has four high, slender and curved legs. Its central body is composed of a drawer pull and three rows of drawers under a top tray with wide borders surrounding the back and sides, thus preventing objects from falling out. The pull-out is covered with green felt. Each drawer opens with small round pull knobs.  The front and sides are covered with diagonal marquetry. Period: 19th century. Dimensions : Height : 69cm x width : 21 x depth : 21cm. The Louis XV style covers a period from 1725 to 1760, a new and precious style, it is also called Rocaille style because the rocaille remains the preferred ornament, it is also called Rococo style or Pompadour style. The distinction is made during this period between the furniture of apparat and the usual furniture, it is also the great time of the cabinetmakers, of the floral or geometrical marquetries, of the taste for the exoticism and of the arrival of a number of small pieces of furniture related to the need for comfort, like the secretaries, the dusters, the bedside tables, etc. Louis XV furniture is a must in the history of decorative arts! It is referred to as "the moment of perfection of French art". Even today, while furniture is essentially based on straight lines and parallelepipedal volumes, the curved Louis...

Antique and Vintage Desks and Writing Tables

Choosing the perfect writing desk or writing table is a profoundly personal journey, one that people have been embarking upon for centuries.

Queen Atossa of Persia, from her writing table circa 500 B.C., is said to have been the originator of the art of handwritten letters. Hers was reportedly the first in a long and colorful history of penned correspondence that grew in popularity alongside literacy. The demand for suitable writing desks, which would serve the composer of the letters as well as ensure the comfort of the recipient naturally followed, and the design of these necessary furnishings has evolved throughout history.

Once people began to seek freedom from the outwardly ornate styles of the walnut and rosewood writing desks and drafting tables introduced in the name of Queen Victoria and King Louis XV, radical shifts occurred, such as those that materialized during the Art Nouveau period, when designers longed to produce furniture inspired by the natural world’s beauty. A prime example is the work of the famous late-19th-century Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí — his rolltop desk featured deep side drawers and was adorned with carved motifs that paid tribute to nature. Gaudí regularly combined structural precision with decorative elements, creating beautiful pieces of furniture in wood and metal.

Soon afterward, preferences for sleek, geometric, stylized forms in furniture that saw an emphasis on natural wood grains and traditional craftsmanship took hold. Today, Art Deco desks are still favored by designers who seek to infuse interiors with an air of luxury. One of the most prominent figures of the Art Deco movement was French decorator and furniture designer Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. With his use of neoclassical motifs as well as expensive and exotic materials such as imported dark woods and inlays of precious metals for his writing desks, Ruhlmann came to symbolize good taste and modernity.

The rise in appreciation for Scandinavian modernism continues to influence the design of contemporary writing desks. It employs the “no fuss” or “less is more” approach to creating a tasteful, sophisticated space. Sweden’s master cabinetmaker Bruno Mathsson created gallery-worthy designs that are as functional as they are beautiful. Finnish architect Alvar Aalto never viewed himself as an artist, but, like Mathsson, his furniture designs reflected a fondness for organic materials and a humanistic approach. Danish designers such as Hans Wegner introduced elegant shapes and lines to mid-century desks and writing tables, often working in oak and solid teak.

From vintage desks to contemporary styles, 1stDibs offers a broad spectrum of choices for conducting all personal and business writing and reading activities.
