Post-Modern Dining Room Tables

POSTMODERN STYLE

Postmodern design was a short-lived movement that manifested itself chiefly in Italy and the United States in the early 1980s. The characteristics of vintage postmodern furniture and other postmodern objects and decor for the home included loud-patterned, usually plastic surfaces; strange proportions, vibrant colors and weird angles; and a vague-at-best relationship between form and function.

ORIGINS OF POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Emerges during the 1960s; popularity explodes during the ’80s
  • A reaction to prevailing conventions of modernism by mainly American architects
  • Architect Robert Venturi critiques modern architecture in his Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966)
  • Theorist Charles Jencks, who championed architecture filled with allusions and cultural references, writes The Language of Post-Modern Architecture (1977)
  • Italian design collective the Memphis Group, also known as Memphis Milano, meets for the first time (1980)
  • Memphis collective debuts more than 50 objects and furnishings at Salone del Milano (1981)
  • Interest in style declines, minimalism gains steam

CHARACTERISTICS OF POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Dizzying graphic patterns and an emphasis on loud, off-the-wall colors
  • Use of plastic and laminates, glass, metal and marble; lacquered and painted wood
  • Unconventional proportions and abundant ornamentation
  • Playful nods to Art Deco and Pop art

POSTMODERN FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE POSTMODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Critics derided postmodern design as a grandstanding bid for attention and nothing of consequence. Decades later, the fact that postmodernism still has the power to provoke thoughts, along with other reactions, proves they were not entirely correct.

Postmodern design began as an architectural critique. Starting in the 1960s, a small cadre of mainly American architects began to argue that modernism, once high-minded and even noble in its goals, had become stale, stagnant and blandly corporate. Later, in Milan, a cohort of creators led by Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendinia onetime mentor to Sottsass and a key figure in the Italian Radical movement — brought the discussion to bear on design.

Sottsass, an industrial designer, philosopher and provocateur, gathered a core group of young designers into a collective in 1980 they called Memphis. Members of the Memphis Group,  which would come to include Martine Bedin, Michael Graves, Marco Zanini, Shiro Kuramata, Michele de Lucchi and Matteo Thun, saw design as a means of communication, and they wanted it to shout. That it did: The first Memphis collection appeared in 1981 in Milan and broke all the modernist taboos, embracing irony, kitsch, wild ornamentation and bad taste.

Memphis works remain icons of postmodernism: the Sottsass Casablanca bookcase, with its leopard-print plastic veneer; de Lucchi’s First chair, which has been described as having the look of an electronics component; Martine Bedin’s Super lamp: a pull-toy puppy on a power-cord leash. Even though it preceded the Memphis Group’s formal launch, Sottsass’s iconic Ultrafragola mirror — in its conspicuously curved plastic shell with radical pops of pink neon — proves striking in any space and embodies many of the collective’s postmodern ideals.

After the initial Memphis show caused an uproar, the postmodern movement within furniture and interior design quickly took off in America. (Memphis fell out of fashion when the Reagan era gave way to cool 1990’s minimalism.) The architect Robert Venturi had by then already begun a series of plywood chairs for Knoll Inc., with beefy, exaggerated silhouettes of traditional styles such as Queen Anne and Chippendale. In 1982, the new firm Swid Powell enlisted a group of top American architects, including Frank Gehry, Richard Meier, Stanley Tigerman and Venturi to create postmodern tableware in silver, ceramic and glass.

On 1stDibs, the vintage postmodern furniture collection includes chairs, coffee tables, sofas, decorative objects, table lamps and more.

Piece E Tabula 'Non' Rasa Table by Studio Traccia
Located in Geneve, CH
Piece E Tabula [non] Rasa table by Studio Traccia Dimensions: W 80 x D 80 x H 74 cm Materials: steel. Different combinations are available. The table was designed for our installation called tabula[non]rasa developed for Milan Design Week 2021, with the intent of materializing the potential of circularity through the lens of food waste. It is realized in recycled steel and a special table top material made of food scraps. The material of the table top was developed by MOGU, using a bio-based resin and low-value biomass, such as corn crops, rice straw, spent coffee grounds, waste algae and shells. The design of the table was conceived within the idea of working on modularity while yet shaping something elegant, playful and able to generate unexpected interactions. The pieces can be assembled all together to form a large leaf-shaped table, or can be arranged in creative combinations, to suit different needs, to display objects in a shop, for an exhibition or in a house. The whole table tells a story of circularity: innovative materials crafted into beautiful objects describe a new possible paradigm where resources are not depleted, but reinvested into a new metabolic loops. A new materialism that invents new narratives and form the common ground of our renewed relationships with the planet. And even more than that, a table of discussion that makes visible, the invisible flows of waste, not in a condescending way but with a positive proposal where different and circular logics are actually possible. Studio Traccia is a Milan based studio, founded in 2020 by Claudia Orsetti and Luigi Olivieri. Both have worked for over 10 years around the world, between Tokyo, London, Berlin and Amsterdam, gaining different experiences in a series of international studios such as SANAA, Heatherwick Studio, Tomas Saraceno...

Solid Walnut Work Desk by Attune Design
Located in Geneve, CH
Solid walnut work desk by Attune Design Dimensions: W 165 x D 78.7 x H 72.4 cm Materials: Walnut. This solid 3 piece walnut desk, takes notes from feminine energy and beauty: strength and curves at every angle. The sturdy, solid walnut desktop, supported by the graceful curves in the legs and cross bar, represents strength in femininity. We wanted to imagine a solid wooden desk that can be assembled and disassembled without tools, one that had individuality yet adaptable to its environment, and we wanted it to serve as an inspiration for creativity. We are a group of designers passionate about helping businesses reach and resonate with their customers. Whether you’re looking for strategy, customer insights, product or service development, conceptual development, graphic, branding, or packaging design we’re here to help. We specialize in delivering on the unknown; bringing resolution to the “what if’s” and the ”I don’t know’s.” Our human-centered approach has conditioned us to listen to the expressed needs of stakeholders, while identifying the unexpressed. To us, everything is about the user experience and we work tirelessly to make sure it is considered at every turn. Driven by the desire to bring harmony, honesty, and beauty to the things and places we live with, Attune was founded by Nelson Jenkins, Zach Boomer and Mitch Barbon in 2020. The interdisciplinary design team with backgrounds in furniture, product and mechanical design have collaborated on projects ranging from environmental tech, interior design, modular and art-furniture. Applying their design principles, Zach and Nelson now create expressive pieces which stand at the intersection of form and function. They are drawn to works that challenge assumptions of form, while pushing the limits of the materials and processes they use. Their first collaborative furniture piece produced, Zola, has both Latin and African origin...
