Mid-Century Modern Tables

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

Italian Design Midcentury Modern White Carrara Marble Pedestal Stand / End Table
Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful and practical, handcrafted table. This rare and beautifully shaped flower stand is entirely hand-crafted out of a beautiful white marble. This timeless table is in good to excellent condition and we date it from the 1960's. This fine specimen stands as strong and stabile as the day it was made and its heavy weight and relatively wide base also ads to that stability. Thanks to its white color and natural and calm decoration of black veins a piece like this can be used in all types of interiors and in a wide variety of color schemes. It never seizes to amaze us how people manage to create such beautiful shapes out of materials that are naturally very 'unwilling to cooperate'. If you already have a place in mind for this fine specimen then maybe you should be its next custodian. Weather you use this piece as a plant stand, a small wine table...

Jim Rose - Coffee Table, Steel Furniture, Hot Rolled and Repurposed Steel
Located in Chicago, IL
This coffee table is made with hot rolled steel and repurposed steel tube legs. The legs were previously painted however the artist sandblasts them and maintains a majority of the paint to add to the industrial aesthetic of the piece. This highly versatile table will add interest and functionality to any room. Jim Rose Coffee Table hot roll and found painted steel 18h x 34w x 60d in 45.72h x 86.36w x 152.40d cm JR0257 Jim Rose b. 1966, d. 2023 Bio: Born in Indiana, Jim Rose lived in Europe until he returned to the United States to attend college. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. Glass Top Rectangular Dining Table with Asymmetric Angled Lucite Pedestal Bases
Located in Chattanooga, TN
This gorgeous Nineteen-Laties Lucite table is almost ghostly as it the clear glass top and acrylic pedestals seem to vanish in the sight line. The two thick Lucite pedestals are asymmetric wedges resembling a three dimensional scalene triangle. The sleek rectangular glass top is half inch thick with a green tint along the edge. The table gleams as light moves through the glass and Lucite. Imagine this in front of a window, shimmering in the light, disappearing on the horizon as not to obstruct you water, mountain or urban view. Get creative with the bases. You can position these bases a variety of ways to create a different look. The bases can also accommodate different size glass tops and different shapes. A round or oval glass top would work just as well as a rectangle or square. Let us know if you would like to purchase the bases without the glass top. We will let you know the adjusted price and shipping. We also have two more sets of Lucite table bases...
