About the Item
Centered around a young man in a blue swimsuit who is lost in thought, looking into the distance, this atmospheric painting shows a group of swimmers enjoying a lovely summer day. The painter, Felix Meseck, manages to create a scene that is lovely and melancholy at the same time, with young men looking across the water to one side, and a mother and child walking in the shadows on the other. Dated 1938, this may come from the period when Felix Meseck worked in Berlin and in Poland. Many of his paintings were destroyed during World War II, so this is a rare survivor. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed and dated in the lower lefthand corner. The remnants of an exhibition label survive on the reverse.
