American Impressionist Kathryn E Bard Cherry Gloucester Wharf Oil Painting
By Kathryn Cherry
Located in Garnerville, NY
Katherine E Bard Cherry (1860-1931) American Impressionist Arts and Crafts period oil painting on canvas. Canvas mounted on board. Retains the original Saint Louis Art League exhibition tag on the reverse that is signed in pen, Kathryn Cherry, Exhibition Entry Form, Thumb-Box Exhibit... Heavily worked impasto of a colorfully rendered boat docked in a Gloucester, MA wharf where she summered. The piece is entitled "Green Boat". Good overall condition with no visible surface paint losses. No visible lifting of the canvas from the board. The framing treatment is a simple reeded edge gold wood molding and the work has been under glass. The piece has been inspected out of the frame. Overall approximate measurements with frame are 17.5" wide x 16" high x 1" deep. The approximate image dimensions 13.5" wide x 12.25" high. Ask Art Bio: Born in Quincy, Illinois, Kathryn Cherry became one of the most prominent artists in Saint Louis in the early 20th century. She painted landscapes, marine scenes, and floral still lifes in an impressionist style. She began her formal art education at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts and then studied with Richard Miller at the New York School of Arts and Hugh Breckenridge at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Cherry started her career as an artist working with porcelain and painted mostly floral subjects. At the 1904 World's Fair, she won the only gold medal awarded to a woman. Beginning 1908, she showed her work regularly at the Saint Louis Artist's Guild, and she was included in numerous exhibits at the Saint Louis Art Museum. In 1915, she became the head of the art department at Principia Junior College Academy, and at this point turned from painting on porcelain to florals on canvases. She also painted scenes at Gloucester, Massachusetts where she spent her summers in her Rocky Neck studio. Her floral studies are said to "possess a rich, tapestry-like blend of colors reminiscent of French Nabis painting."

Antique Italian Oil on Canvas, The Wood Carver's Apprentice, Giovanni Torriglia
By Giovanni Battista Torriglia
Located in Dallas, TX
A fascinating oil on canvas painting depicting a group of monks in a wood carving studio, this oil on canvas was painted by Giovanni Torriglia in the late 1800s. The darkened tones used by Torriglia (black and brown) are offset by a gilt frame with foliate details above a deep cavetto molding. Five monks are gathered around a workbench inside a workshop covered in shadows. One of the young monks, who is wearing glasses, is manipulating a sheer green fabric across the only light source: a shuttered window behind our quintet. Two senior clergymen sit behind the workbench on slatted Savonarola chairs. They gaze with delight at a junior monk hammering a chisel into wood, sculpting a winged angel. A final youthful monk leans on a wonderfully carved sgabello chair, watching the apprentice closely. The colors are splendid, accentuated by tiny nuances such as the wood chips on the floor, various completed sculptures behind the monks, and a green-leafed tree visible outside the window. Giovanni Battista Torriglia...

Art Nouveau Copper Charger with Bird and Berries by Ludwig Karl Maria Vierthaler
Located in Chicago, US
Recognized for his technically superior and beautiful metal patinations for tableware, Munich born Ludwig Vierthaler’s designs and metalwork caught the attention of Tiffany & Co., NY, for whom he worked in the mid-1890s. 1906 proved to be a decisive year in his career. Though Vierthaler had left his position as the Director of Design at J. Winhart & Co. earlier that year, examples of his work for Winhart were shown along with collaborative work with Eugen Ehrenbock at the Bayerishe Jubilaums-Landers-Ausstellung in Nuremburg - for which he received a gold medal - and at the Deutsche Kunstgewerbe-Ausstellung in Dresden -for which he received a silver medal. He and Ehrenbock formalized their partnership in 1907. Vierthaler later expanded his metalwork output to include jewelry and lighting design as well as figural and ornamental building decoration design. A member of the Deutscher Werkbund...

Vintage Caroline Burnett French Impressionist Cityscape Painting Canvas Framed
Located in Dayton, OH
Vintage Parisian Cityscape. Features a crowded street leading up to a capital building. Beautifully detailed with vibrant colors. Signed Lower right with gold frame. Caroline C. Burnett (1877 - 1950) was active/lived in France, United States. Known for Parisien street-scene painting. American-born artist Caroline Burnett was known for her Impressionist street scenes of Paris. Her painting style reflected the contemporary movement that was occurring in France during her time there. Caroline Burnett paintings also display hints of abstract influence, especially her figural paintings. This change of styles from time to time is not surprising, as Burnett's paintings were produced mainly for the tourist market. Artist Caroline Burnett was a member of the Societe de Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she exhibited her works in 1898. Using both light and shadow with skill and precision, she painted cityscapes showing each season in Paris. Though her artwork's value is mainly aesthetic, Caroline Burnett oil painting...
