About the Item

Alexander Calder "Merging Curves" Unsigned Abstract Color Lithograph "Merging Curves" is an abstract color lithograph by American artist and sculptor Alexander Calder (1898-1976). Calder was a leader in the kinetic art movement and is known for his sculptures that explore form, volume and void. This piece is a framed page (Plate 2) from "Derriere le Miroir," #173. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Merrill Chase Galleries. In October 1945, the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opened his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. The opening of the gallery coincides with the end of World War II and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The magazine was created in October 1946 (n°1) and published without interruption until 1982 (n°253). Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) were famous at the time. The magazine covered only the artists exhibited by Maeght gallery either through personal or group exhibitions. In the postwar year 1946, Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, owners of the Maeght Gallery in Paris, embarked on a publishing venture: in search of a kind of "forum" for the discussion and distribution of original graphic work by "their" artists, the idea of Derriere le miroir (Behind the mirror) was born. Devoted exclusively to contemporary graphic work of artists represented by the gallery, the periodical Derrière le Miroir served as both, exhibition catalogue for Maeght shows as well as forum for distribution of less expensive original graphic works. Published up to six times a year, Derrière le Miroir offered original graphics by such acclaimed contemporary artists as Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, Wassily Kandinsky, Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tàpies, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Jean Arp, Ellsworth Kelly, Raoul Ubac and many others--for an incredible period of 36 years! In total, 201 issues were published, perfectly documenting the so-called "postwar period," where contemporary art is concerned. Measurements are as follows: Framed Piece - 28" W x 21.25" H x 1" D Image Size - 21.75" W x 14.75" H
