Art Deco Diamond & Burma Sapphire & Ruby Brooches, one by Cartier, c. 1920.

About the Item

Cartier Art Deco diamond and unheated Burma sapphire, platinum brooch/hair barrette (signed and numbered) is offered with an architecturally identical, but very slightly larger ruby brooch: 1/16th inch longer, and 1/8th inch wider. The very slightly smaller Cartier sapphire brooch measures 1- 7/8th in length, and one half of an inch in width. The diamond and unheated Burma Ruby brooch is 5/8th of an inch in width, and 1-15/16th of an inch in length. The sapphire brooch has a weight of 11.9 grams, and the ruby brooch has a weight of 19.2 grams. The quality of the materials in these matching brooches/hair barrettes is nothing short of superlative, the craftsmanship is supremely high and the form and proportions are the same. Arguably they could have been made by different hands, but they are well matched in the extreme. The pieces can be worn with equal facility in the hair or in fabric. The Cartier Art Deco Diamond and Sapphire Platinum Antique Brooch and Hair Barrette is signed and numbered by Cartier, this Art Deco jewel is nothing short of magnificent. The natural unheated sapphires (almost assuredly from Burma), are a bright vivid blue, they are estimated to weigh 4.5 cts. The diamonds are all well matched, estimated to be F in color (colorless), and very, very slightly included (VVS) in clarity. They are estimated to weigh .98 cts. The ruby and diamond clip possesses very fine and unusual fancy cut diamonds, (which in the trade are called French cut) and vividly red unheated Burma rubies. The rubies are estimated weight is 3.74 cts. The diamonds are colorless to near colorless (F/G), and very very slightly included to very slightly included (VVS-VS). The estimated diamond weight is 9.5 cts. While not signed, because of the workmanship and fine materials, it was undoubtedly made by an important jewelry House. These two objects are wonderful examples from the Art Deco time period. It is rare to encounter one authentic Art Deco brooch/hair barrette with such fine stones and workmanship, but to find this ensemble is a rarity. Here we are offering these two pieces together, but they can be purchased separately. Please note our model is a medium to large size. All items sold are accompanied by a detailed Statement of Value by our gemologist, as well as all original gemological documentation, if specified in the listing. As always, we guarantee all of pieces to be exactly as represented. Each piece of jewelry arrives in a finely gift-wrapped presentation box. Over the decades of our stewardship as a small but exemplary purveyor of the jeweler's art, we have strived to offer a fine and authentic selection, in excellent condition, of collectible jewels from all highly sought time periods at competitive prices and even lower prices, if possible. In the process we have had the extraordinary good fortune of meeting remarkable people - some collectors, others just extremely interesting individuals who have taken the time and effort to examine their lives and select things that tend to make them smile, or admire, or just wonder at the exciting endlessly creative and nuanced panoply of jeweled artifacts.

This is a striking Art Deco statement possessing very fine and unusual fancy cut diamonds and natural unheated Burma rubies This piece can be worn either as a brooch or as a hair barrette. The diamonds are extremely rare and visually exciting to encounter. In the trade these are known as French cut diamonds. The natural unheated Burma rubies are a vivid red color, they are estimated to weigh 3.74 cts. The design of this geometric brooch is superb and contains unusually fine materials set with the highest of craftsmanship; and, visually presents itself as striking and vibrantly vivid. This clip was made so that it could be worn on fabric or in the hair as a barrette. The double stems in the back are slightly curved so that they can both slide through fabric smoothly, and comfortable and easy to wear in the hair. The clip is also slightly curved so that it will hold any thickness of hair or fabric. The two pinstems squeeze together and each fit into its own holder making the barrettes quite comfortable. This outstanding Art Deco piece was purchased with an identical Art Deco, very slightly smaller, brooch/hair clip - a sapphire and diamond matching statement, this piece is signed and numbered by Cartier (included in some of our photographs).
