Athenian silver tetradrachm coins hold a significant place in ancient Greek history and numismatics. These coins, which date back to the 5th century BCE, were minted in Athens, the cultural and intellectual hub of the ancient world. On the obverse side of the coin, one can observe the profile head of the goddess Athena, adorned with a crested Attic helmet. The helmet is beautifully ornamented with three laurel leaves and a vine scroll, symbolizing victory and prosperity. Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, was highly revered in Athens, making her the ideal choice for the obverse design. The reverse side presents an owl, the sacred bird of Athena, standing and facing right. The owl symbolizes knowledge, intelligence, and vigilance. To the right of the owl, the inscription ΑΘΕ in Ancient Greek letters denotes the city of Athens. Behind the owl, an olive spring and a crescent moon can be found, further emphasizing the ties to Athena and highlighting the importance of these symbolic elements in Athenian culture. The entire motif and inscription are enclosed within an incuse square, which creates a visually appealing and distinctive design. The use of an incuse square is an ancient technique that adds depth and texture to the overall appearance of the coin. Athenian silver tetradrachms were not only used as a medium of exchange but also served as powerful propaganda tools, showcasing the grandeur and influence of Athens. The intricate design and skilled craftsmanship of these coins exemplify the artistic prowess and cultural significance of ancient Greece. Today, Athenian silver tetradrachms are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, not only for their historical value but also for their aesthetic appeal. These coins provide a tangible link to the rich heritage of ancient Athens and continue to captivate the imagination of individuals fascinated by the ancient world. Ancient coins have been utilized in jewelry for centuries, particularly in the form of pendants. These coins, which hold historical value and artistic allure, have been incorporated into various jewelry pieces, often serving as a testament to the wearer's appreciation for antiquity. The charm of ancient coin pendants lies in their exquisite craftsmanship and the stories they evoke. Whether it's a Roman denarius, a Greek drachma, or an Egyptian silver tetradrachm, these coins showcase the intricate details of ancient civilizations, featuring mythological figures, rulers, and symbols. The timeless beauty of these coins, combined with the creativity of jewelry designers, results in unique and captivating pendants. The significance of ancient coin pendants extends beyond their aesthetics. They provide a tangible connection to the past, serving as a bridge between modernity and antiquity. Each coin holds its own history, offering a glimpse into the economic, cultural, and political landscape of its time. By wearing such a pendant, individuals express their fascination with the past and their desire to keep its legacy alive. Throughout history, numerous prominent figures have been known to wear ancient jewelry, including pendants adorned with coins. Royals and nobles, such as queens and princesses, often possessed elaborate collections of ancient jewels, showcasing their wealth and refinement. Notable examples include Cleopatra, who adorned herself with opulent jewel-encrusted diadems and pendants featuring ancient Egyptian coins...

Contemporary Diamond Festoon Collar Necklace
Located in New York, NY
The defining flourish of a festoon necklace is the drama of its swag, opulently undulating and accenting the collarbones in radiant sparkle. Festooning has been used since ancient times, with the most recent celebratory example adorning the city of London at the Coronation of King Charles. In classical Greek and Roman architecture, the festoon was a garland of ribbons, flowers, fruit, or foliage draped between two supports, used as decoration and, at times, the symbol of saintliness, glory, or victory. These garlands were also worn on the body--on the head or around the neck to signify honor or celebration, and this tradition was carried forward to the Classical period, the Renaissance, and through to Victorian England, especially as a recurrent motif in paintings and sculpture. The festoon is also a type of necklace that contains several drapes or swags of gemstones, chains, and other sculptural elements as the critical elements of the design. The style became popular during the Georgian period (1714–1830s), carrying over into the Victorian era (1837–1901), and has been revived with many sparkling all-diamond...

We are fortunate to know much of the world’s long and dazzling history of necklaces, as this type of jewelry was so treasured that it was frequently buried with its owners.

Lapis lazuli beads adorned necklaces unearthed from the royal graves at the ancient Iraqi civilization of Sumer, while the excavation of King Tut’s burial chamber revealed a sense of style that led to a frenzy of Art Deco designs, with artisans of the 1920s seeking to emulate the elegant work crafted by Ancient Egypt’s goldsmiths and jewelry makers.

In ancient times, pendant necklaces worn by royalty and nobles conferred wealth and prestige. Today, wearing jewelry is about personal expression: Luxury diamond necklaces exude confidence and can symbolize the celebratory nature of a deep romantic relationship, while paper-clip chain-link necklaces designed by the likes of goldsmith Faye Kim are firmly planted in the past as well as the present. Kim works exclusively with eco-friendly gold, and these fashionable, fun accessories owe to the design of 19th-century watch fobs.

For some, necklaces are thought of as being a solely feminine piece, but this widely loved accessory has been gender-neutral for eons. In fact, just as women rarely took to wearing a single necklace during the Renaissance, men of the era layered chains and valuable pendants atop their bejeweled clothing. In modern times, the free-spirited hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s saw costume-jewelry designers celebrating self-expression through colorful multistrand necklaces and no shortage of beads, which were worn by anyone and everyone.

Even after all of these years, the necklace remains an irrefutable staple of any complete outfit. Although new trends in jewelry are constantly emerging, the glamour and beauty of the past continue to inform modern styles and designs. In a way, the cyclical history of the necklace differs little from its familiar looped form: The celebrated French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels found much inspiration in King Tut, and, now, their Alhambra collection is a go-to for modern royals. Vintage necklaces designed by David Webb — whose work landed him on the cover of Vogue in 1950, two years after opening his Manhattan shop — were likely inspired by the ornamental styles of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt

On 1stDibs, browse top designers like Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Bulgari, or shop by your favorite style, from eye-catching choker necklaces to understated links to pearl necklaces and more.
