Victorian Egyptian Revival 14K Gold Reverse Painted Essex Crystal of Sphinx
Located in Venice, CA
This spectacular gold Egyptian revival charm features a sphinx that has been reverse carved, and hand-painted. This is called an Essex crystal, which is a cut cabochon of crystal with a carved design on the back. The technique of creating this floating effect is very precise, and dates back to the 1860's. This pendant is a vintage piece, featuring the Roman numeral of XL (40) onto it, perhaps dating this piece to 1940. Or this number could refer to something else. Regardless of the date of this piece, it is a wonderful item, made with superb craftsmanship and in a very old and special method of intaglio. The cabochon has a lot on dimensionality, measuring 1/2 an inch. The lettering on the piece is in a striking red, which contrasts with the green...

Zolotas Greek Revival Hercules Sautoir Mesh Necklace In solid 18Kt Yellow Gold
Located in Miami, FL
Sautoir necklace designed by Zolotas. Gorgeous dangle necklace, created in Greece by the jewelry house of Zolotas back in the late 20th century. This elegant necklace has been crafted with a mesh of wires made up in solid yellow gold of 18 karats. Designed with two dangle drops elements and an Hercules Knot. Fitted with a push box safety lock and a hinged figure 8 for extra security. Hercules Knot The Hercules Knot was notably a wedding symbol and also represented the virginity of the bride: this coming from the Roman lore that the Knot symbolized the legendary fertility of Hercules - relating to the girdle of Diana (Artemis) which was captured/retrieved from the Amazon Queen Hippolyta. Later on, the Hercules Knot survived its religious uses with the Ancients and was actually still used during medieval times as a common symbol as well as also being Renaissance love tokens. Weight: 139.80 Grams, (89.61Dwt). Size: Totally extended is 36 Inch (91.40 Cm). Measurements: The dangle drops have a lenght of 5.2 and 4.1 inches respectively. Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark, the mark for the assay of the gold and signed, "ZOLOTAS Z04 18KT". History of Zolotas The firm of Zolotas, was founded in Athens in 1895 by Efthimios Zolotas. The jewelry of Zolotas is very well known for their designs inspired by Greek antiquity. In the 1950, they made the decision to create the trademark and branches out into international markets. It was also during this era that the jewelry House of Zolotas began crafting what would become their ancient Greek signature style. In a gorgeous combination of modern and ancient styles. The high karat gold jewelry was fashioned using traditional techniques and motifs with contemporary flair. The symbols which had been sacred to the Greek culture some thousands of years prior were now manifested in ram, lion, snake and bull jewelry...

Garnet Turquoise Amethyst Locket Pendant Austro-Hungarian Renaissance Revival

The gems are all set in silver gilt as was the custom of the Austro-Hungarian jewels. In the center is a gorgeous Bohemian Garnet cabochon. The garnet is 9mm by 7mm. Surrounding the garnet are Amethyst, Turquoise and Pearls all set in raised cut down collets. The gems continue onto the bale with a Pearl, Turquoise and Amethyst. We are fortunate to know much of the world’s long and dazzling history of necklaces, as this type of jewelry was so treasured that it was frequently buried with its owners.

Lapis lazuli beads adorned necklaces unearthed from the royal graves at the ancient Iraqi civilization of Sumer, while the excavation of King Tut’s burial chamber revealed a sense of style that led to a frenzy of Art Deco designs, with artisans of the 1920s seeking to emulate the elegant work crafted by Ancient Egypt’s goldsmiths and jewelry makers.

In ancient times, pendant necklaces worn by royalty and nobles conferred wealth and prestige. Today, wearing jewelry is about personal expression: Luxury diamond necklaces exude confidence and can symbolize the celebratory nature of a deep romantic relationship, while paper-clip chain-link necklaces designed by the likes of goldsmith Faye Kim are firmly planted in the past as well as the present. Kim works exclusively with eco-friendly gold, and these fashionable, fun accessories owe to the design of 19th-century watch fobs.

For some, necklaces are thought of as being a solely feminine piece, but this widely loved accessory has been gender-neutral for eons. In fact, just as women rarely took to wearing a single necklace during the Renaissance, men of the era layered chains and valuable pendants atop their bejeweled clothing. In modern times, the free-spirited hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s saw costume-jewelry designers celebrating self-expression through colorful multistrand necklaces and no shortage of beads, which were worn by anyone and everyone.

Even after all of these years, the necklace remains an irrefutable staple of any complete outfit. Although new trends in jewelry are constantly emerging, the glamour and beauty of the past continue to inform modern styles and designs. In a way, the cyclical history of the necklace differs little from its familiar looped form: The celebrated French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels found much inspiration in King Tut, and, now, their Alhambra collection is a go-to for modern royals. Vintage necklaces designed by David Webb — whose work landed him on the cover of Vogue in 1950, two years after opening his Manhattan shop — were likely inspired by the ornamental styles of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt

On 1stDibs, browse top designers like Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Bulgari, or shop by your favorite style, from eye-catching choker necklaces to understated links to pearl necklaces and more.
