Art Deco Beaded Necklaces

ART DECO STYLE

Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.

The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.

However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)

While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.

Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.

A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

Bright Apple Green Jadeite Jade Necklace Certified Untreated
Located in Southbury, CT
Bright, and filled with light, this radiant Art Deco era (circa 1920s -1930s) necklace is composed of 107 hand-carved and polished natural and untreated Burmese jadeite jade beads. The beads range in size from 4.13mm to 9.38. Overall, the beads are a bright, fresh spring green. I would say "pea green" but that sounds so awful. In truth, the beads are the color of those hard and shiny peas that you see when you crack open the first pod of the season. But these beads are also genetically gifted: they contain little patches of shockingly perfect imperial green, deep forest green, and even a green so faint it reminds me of light green velvet rubbed the wrong way so that light reflects off where you stroked your finger over the velvet and the green velvet is now whiter. Yes, go ahead and say it: the necklace deserves a finer clasp. But does it? This clasp is original to the piece. It was made by hand in the early twentieth century. It's silver and once it was gilt. It's a clasp I've seen on many jade and beaded necklaces from this period and I find the humble nature...

Couture 1930s ElsaSchiaparelliStyle FuchsiaFauxRubyGoldGlassBeads Tassel Sautoir
Located in Chicago, IL
Elsa Schiaparelli famously embraced "shocking pink" for her Surrealist-aesthetic couture clothing and handcrafted costume jewelry, which she commissioned from Parisian paruriers beginning in the late 1920s--when some of the most expensive gems were fuchsia Burmese rubies. In this antique glass-beaded sautoir tassel necklace, 37 unusual fuchsia faux-pearls are each delicately caged like hot-air balloons by seven textural strands of faux-pearl-and-gold seed beads. These spherical stations are spaced by lustrous white medium-size faux pearls, ending in a four-strand seed-bead tassel that cages four of the fuchsia beads. The beads are strung on bright magenta silk cord without a clasp. Sautoirs were an essential element of flapper style since Schiaparelli's couture-mentor Paul Poiret changed the silhouette of clothing in the 1920s, while the long necklaces remained popular until wartime 1939. To compete with her rival couturier Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, Schiaparelli (1890-1973) relied on the same French glassmakers, Maison Gripoix and Louis Rousselet--the masters of faux pearls at the time who added organic-ingredient coatings to their handmade glass beads. Either glass workshop that was established by the 1920s could have been commissioned to make the progressive hot-pink pearls for this unsigned necklace that dates to the Art-Deco period. The design of this highly-textural tricolor sautoir featuring fuchsia spheres could suit the style of one of Schiaparelli's most frequent paruriers through the 1930s, Jean Clement. Some of his relevant unsigned work for Schiaparelli is in museum collections like The Met, including highly-textural tricolor sphere-decorated buttons/brooches and a fuchsia-toned metal-rosebud bead necklace. After Schiaparelli had become associated with fuchsia, she made particularly prolific use of this bright magenta in the late 1930s. In her demi-couture collections such as "Circus" and "Comedia del' Arte" (see our 3 photos), fuchsia jackets are adorned with similar colorful spherical glass beads among embroidered appliques and animal/clown brooches, as well as whimsical painted-ceramic buttons...

Vintage New Zealand Bowenite Necklace
Located in Chesterland, OH
Bowenite is often mistaken as Jade. Bowenite is a hard, compact variety of the serpentinite species antigorite. It has been used for tools, weapons, and jewelry by the Māori in New Zealand (it is also called Tangiwaite or Maori Greenstone), and this gemstone was used for jewelry by Fabergé. Bowenite is also the state mineral of Rhode Island in the USA. It typically ranges in color from dark green to light olive green and in shades approaching yellow. Bowenite was named by James D. Dana in 1850 after George T. Bowen, who analyzed it in 1822. This is Bowenite from the New Zealand company of Tuarangi Jade Jewellery. The Maori classification system for pounamu describes four varieties: Kahurangi, Kawakawa, Inanga, and Tangiwai ((Bowenite) is the type of serpentine). This beautiful, elegant, long necklace is made of high-quality natural Bowenite. The bowenite beads are top quality, pure, uniform, and soft green, and they're sumptuous in how they look and feel. The beads are very old. Each bead was cut by hand and polished by a craftsman. The beads are much older than the necklace. Authentic, natural color. No thermal or other mechanical treatments were used. Even holes in the beads were drilled by hand. Therefore, each bead is not ideal but perfect at the same time. This necklace alternates beads of jade...
