The University of Goldsmiths was founded in 1508 and the statutes approved the following year introduced the use of the master's mark in addition to the previous guarantee mark. In 1738, with the reform of the Statutes of Goldsmiths, the guild acquired the name of "Nobil Collegio degli Orefici ed Argentieri di Roma" (Noble College of Goldsmiths and silversmiths of Rome). The warranty mark used prior to the French invasion was a series of "crossed keys of St. Peter under a liturgical umbrella" enclosed into shields, ovals or other geometric shapes. Emil Biedermann 1867 Austrian Important Presentation Agate Pendant in 19Kt Gold
Located in Miami, FL
A highly important Austrian pendant-brooch in 19 Karats by Emil Biedermann (1830-1900). An exceptionally rare and gorgeous over sized presentation cameo piece, created in Vienna in 1867 by Emil Biedermann. The Biedermann jewelry house, was located in the number 13 of the popular aristocratic Graben street. They was granted in 1850, by the emperor Franz Joseph I (1830-1916), with the Austrian Imperial House Warrant, appointing the jewelry house as the purveyors to the court and "Kammerlieferant" (Chamber Jeweler). The company was founded by Michael Lazar Biedermann (born 1769 as Michael Lazar in Bratislava) who at fifteen, was apprenticed to an engraver in Vienna. He became a seal-engraver and adopted the name Biedermann in 1792. He was entrusted, with the engraving of the imperial seals and by 1800 was enabled to open a Jeweler's store in Vienna. In the last years of his company, Emil Biedermann was also purveyor to the royal Serbian court and to the grand ducal Saxon court. This piece feature a fabulous three-dimensional cameo piece, carved from a three layered of natural agate, with color's gradations; from translucent orange brown, opalescent gray, to frosted white. The quality of the carving is exceptional, with intricate thorough details. For example, the ear and the incised lines of the hair are magnificent. The carving depicts, the dressed portrait bust of the classical Greek-Roman goddess, Diana the huntress, facing to the right. Most probably the model used, was the ancient sculpture at the Albertina Museum. The fabulous mounting frame is crafted in solid rich yellow gold of 19 karats, with geometric Austrian elements. It is suited at the reverse, with a hinged horizontal pin to be wear as a brooch and a flexible removable discrete adapter to be used into a chain. This piece have a total weight of 72.9 grams and a measures of 77 mm by 80 mm by 28 mm (3.03 x 3.15 x 1.1 inches). The agate piece is signed at the reverse by the carver-cutter artist (unknown) and numbered 361. Is stamped with multiples Austrian hallmarks; twice with the mark for Vienna, the Austrian mark for the guaranty of the 19 kt gold...

Product Details: Item #: STE-20655 Artist: James W. Lyon, Edinburgh Country: Scotland Circa: 1860's Dimensions: Earpendants: 3" length; Pendant Brooch: 2.5" length; Chain: 13.5" length Materials: Cabochon almandine garnet (with approximate total weight 6.10 carats); Cabochon almandine garnet (with approximate total weight 4.05 carats); 15K Gold; fitted original box from James W. Lyon, Edinburgh. Literature: A substantially similar demi-parure in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is pictured in Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria, by Charlotte Gere and Judy Rudoe, p.17. The image of the demi-parure is accompanied by an image of a lithograph of a young Queen Victoria wearing a substantially similar demi-parure. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Queen Victoria, whom the artistic record shows owned a substantially similar demi-paure, was deeply interested in couture and jewelry. Often, she chose to wear jewelry by British makers, in many cases work that was historically inspired and/or sentimental, knowing that her choices were closely observed by the public. These jewels were often relatively modest in value, and accessible to aspiring women of the British middle class. Blood-red cabochon-cut gems have been known throughout history as "carbuncles", and their use in gold jewelry was highly popular in the sentimental, symbolism-loving Victorian period in England. In the 19th century, the new study of of archaeology had revealed that the garnet was a favorite precious stone of the Hellenistic Greeks, who centered carbuncles in wedding jewelry such as gold bracelets and garment appliqués fashioned...

Magnificent Victorian Era 14K Gold Enameled Cupid Bow Pendant with Pearl
Located in Versailles, FR
Holding this magnificent pendant in hand, we realized that the art of the miniature painter, enameller, gem-setter and jewelry designer have come together to provide us a feast for the eyes. This very sentimental Victorian era cupid enameled pendant finds its own way to bring the color and emotions into a piece of jewelry. The pendant is made in 14k yellow gold (hallmarked), with a circle of natural seed pearls on the frame and a larger white pearl in the bow. The central enamel panel features two winged cupids. One with a red scarf holding an arrow and running toward the other one, who is waiting next to an urn decorated with pink and blue roses. A white dove standing between the two cupids is considered as a symbol of love and peace. The cupid on the left side of the scene wears a sky-blue scarf, with a rose garland in his hand. The sky is painted in pastel violetish blue, which adds extra harmony and romance into the story. The idea of combining cupid and roses as a strong symbol of love dates back centuries and still continues today. Although emblematic in various modern incarnations, it is never more sentimental than in antique jewelry. This rare piece of enameled cupid pendant...
