An exceptional, fine and impressive large antique Victorian English sterling silver christening mug; part of our silver christening collection This antique Victorian silver christening mug has a circular, subtly tapering rounded form onto a circular spreading foot. The body of the mug is embellished with exceptional embossed and chased decorated angel/putto* head designs, accented with wing motifs to the nadir. The body of this large mug is further ornamented with large ribbon bow motifs and floral festoons, encompassing the aforementioned portrait designs, all within an arabesque band and matte background. The decoration to the body incorporates a vacant shaped cartouche to the anterior. The lower portion of this Victorian silver christening mug is encompassed with a plain applied girdle, above further chased floral designs within a shaped-scalloped border. This mug is fitted with a cast silver angular handle with leaf decorated bifurcating terminals, in addition to impressive ribbon and leaf ornamentation to the upper portion of the handpiece. This exceptional example of Victorian silverware retains the original gilding. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver spoon celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee has a plain oval form. The anterior surface of the handle is embellished with a variety of commemorative subtly gilded scenes separated by scrolling ribbon ornamentation accented with the scene depicting wording 'Peace', 'Commerce', 'Electricity', 'Rifle Volunteers', 'Steam' and 'Penny Postage'. The reverse surface is ornamented with the insignia of the Star of India including the motto 'Heavens Light Our Guard' above a further scrolling ribbon design incorporating the wording 'Indian Empire', 'Canada', 'Australasia' and 'Cape Colony' amidst undulating laurel branches. The lower portion of the reverse of the handle includes part hallmarks beside the inscription 'In commemoration of the 60th year of the most glorious reign of H.I.M. Victoria Empress & Queen - 1837-1897 -'. The shaped terminal of the handle is ornamented in the form of the Imperial State Crown to both the anterior surface and reverse. The anterior surface of the bowl of this Diamond Jubilee commemorative spoon incorporates an impressive gilded scene depicting prestigious figures raising their crowns and surrounding the throne mounted Queen Victoria. The reverse of the bowl is plain and unembellished, apart from the full hallmarks and registration number '288518' and features a leaf decorated heel. Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other. Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. Thomas Sheraton explained the functions of dining room pedestals in his 'Drawing Book' of 1793: 'IN spacious dining rooms the sideboards are often made without drawers of any sort, having simply a rail, a little ornament...
