On January 27, 1934 Stanley married Emilie Rossel. Emilie had emigrated from Switzerland to New York in 1923. She found work as a governess to Alfred Vanderbilt and later as an executive secretary for Wall Street investment brokers Kahn, Loeb and Co. Emilie met Stanley in New York in the early 1930’s when she attended one of his art exhibitions with a friend. The couple, who had no children, lived on 34th Street in Manhattan. During this period, Bate was producing and exhibiting his art and joined several artists groups. Stanley and Emilie became part of the New York art scene, dining weekly at the Society of Illustrators Clubhouse. Stanley Bate’s time in New York was pivotal in the formation of his painting style. A fabulous example of 1960s geometric/op art, displaying all the fun, playfulness and vibrancy of the style. Op art, short for optical art, is a style of visual art that uses optical illusions. Typically, they give the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images and vibrating patterns. Its roots can be traced back to Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and Dada. The maker of this stunning piece is Tony Gonnet (1909-2004) an artist close to those who shaped modern art and its history. Working in Casablanca in 1940 he met André Breton and Saint-Exupéry, who were both on their way to America. Unable to obtain a visa for himself, Gonnet returned to Paris in January of 1942. Living on Rue de Seine, he became one of the figures of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and numbered amongst his many friends Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean Genet – who prefaced his first Parisian exhibition in 1952 – as well as Albert Camus, Simone Signoret, Boris Vian, Jacques and Pierre Prévert and many others. In 1941, in the ennui of Casablanca, Tony Gonnet had started to draw, and then paint, in a Surrealist style. In 1946 he abandoned figurative surrealism in favour of abstraction, making sole use from then on of geometric forms and shaded tones, in his own unique style. A long-disputed region that is ethnically Lithuanian, at present day, Grodno is located in the western reaches of the Republic of Belarus, near the borders with Poland and Lithuania. At the age of ten, Ribak and his family immigrated to New York City. In 1922, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, followed by studies at the Art Students League (1923) and the Educational Alliance (1924). Ribak’s oeuvre can be largely delineated between two stylistic phases: social realism and abstraction, the former taking hold during the 1930s and 40s. During that period, he had several solo exhibitions at the A.C.A. Gallery in New York, while also regularly exhibiting with “An American Group Inc.” - a cohort of socially-conscious painters that included Stuart Davis, Reginald Marsh, Maurice Sterne, and Raphael Soyer. In 1933, Ribak assisted Diego Rivera on the mural for the lobby of Rockefeller Center, while also being employed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as a muralist. Louis Ribak met fellow artist Beatrice Mandelman at a dance sponsored by the Artists Union in New York. They were married in 1942, and shortly thereafter, he was drafted for military service in World War II. After his discharge from the service in 1942 due to difficulties with asthma, Mandelman and Ribak traveled west to visit his former mentor John Sloan in Santa Fe, NM. By this time, the couple had become disenchanted with the art scene in New York, and in light of the need to find a healthier climate for Ribak’s asthma - as well as reputed FBI surveillance based on political affiliations with Communist sympathizers - they decided to permanently relocate to the emerging artists’ colony of Taos, NM in 1944. This change of scenery ushered in the second phase of Ribak’s stylistic career, with his work shifting from social realism toward abstraction. He was captivated by the landscape and the diverse cultures of northern New Mexico, the influences of which began to appear in his work. Ribak founded the Taos Valley Art School in 1947, offering no ideology to his students; instead arguing that the adoption of a single approach would lead to academicism. Influences of Surrealism, Cubism, and Modernism can be found in their work, along with an interest in experimenting with non-traditional materials and methods. American art was in the forefront of international avant-garde for the first time. Stanley Bate was undoubtedly exposed to the varied styles and techniques that were emerging during the formative years of the New York School. Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell were formulating their versions of color field paintings. Joseph Cornell was experimenting with assemblages, collage and the use of different types of textured paints. Jackson Pollock was adhering objects such as buttons and coins into his early works, while Louise Nevelson was using found objects. Helen Frankenthaler added sand to her early paintings. The New York School artists were undermining traditional fine art by using mixed media and non-traditional methods. Stanley Bate absorbed these varied influences and soon his early realistic landscapes and still-lifes were replaced with something entirely new. The influence of Cubism, notably the flat shallow space of the picture plane, is obvious in many of Bate’s paintings. Surrealism is evident in Bate’s use of subjects from myth, primitive art and antiquity, along with the Automatism-like line work in his more linear images. The unfettered experimentation of the New York School is everywhere in Stanley Bate’s work. We see nods to color field, collage, the mixing of textures into paint, mixed media, the inclusion of found objects and thick, luscious impasto. Bate was prolific and experimented in various media including oil, watercolor, lithography, silk screen, wood cut, drawing, collage, ceramics and sculpture. Bate is considered a true Modernist. His work is largely abstract, but sometimes figures and buildings are discernable. He frequently mixed paint, sand and glue together to achieve a textured surface, and then scraped and scratched through this layer to expose some of the underpainting below. His sculpture, which is often whimsical, also reflects the non-traditional methods of the New York School. Bate pioneered the use of enamel and copper in his work. The sculptures are not carved or modeled as was done in the past, but instead are built using mixed media and new materials. In addition to the New York School influence, many of Bate’s works exhibit a strong connection to the Spanish school, especially the work of Antonio Tapies and Modesto Cuixart. These artists were both part of an avant-garde group known as Art Informel, the Spanish equivalent of Abstract Expressionism. These artists likewise worked in mixed media and introduced objects and texture into their work. Many of Bate’s subjects and titles relate to Spanish locations and words. It is likely that Stanley spent time in Spain and found inspiration there. By the early 1940s, Stanley and Emilie had started spending weekends in a barn they purchased in Craryville, New York, a few hours north of Manhattan. The barn had no electricity or plumbing, but when the Bates eventually decided to leave New York and live full time in Craryville, they remodeled the barn, putting a gallery downstairs and a studio and living quarters upstairs. Although the Bates moved out of New York City, Stanley remained part of the New York art scene, exhibiting in New York and elsewhere throughout the 50s and 60s. During his lifetime he was represented by the New York galleries Knoedler and Company, Kennedy Galleries, Rose Fried Gallery and Key Gallery, along with Tyringham Gallery located in Tyringham, Massachusetts. Bernard Segal was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Cincinnati University and the Cincinnati Art Academy. He was known for figure, abstract painting, collage, and cartoon illustration. In the 1920's and 30's, he lived in NYC and attended The Art Students League where he was creative with a number of artistic styles of the period. During WWII, he worked as a cartoonist for a government issued newspaper called 10-SHUN that was published in Greensboro, NC. Bernard worked under the pen name Seeg, and was the author of the comic strip "Hank and Honey," that appeared in the New York Herald Tribune from the 1940's through the 50's. This cartoon was syndicated and published in Quebec under the title "Louise et Louis." The strip was later retitled to Ellsworth. Segal also illustrated a number of Jewish books that were published by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and Bible stories. In the 1950's Segal moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and became a member of the New Hope Modernists. Emilio Rodríguez Larraín was a Peruvian postwar and contemporary painter and sculptor who was born in 1928. He was trained at the Lima School of Engineers (currently the National University of Engineering) from 1945 to 1949. This is how he entered art and was able to learn tools and techniques that would help him in his future works. In the 1950s he ventured into painting under the influence of the French architect and abstract art painter Jean Dewasne, thus developing a painting style based on the abstract and the geometric until his trip to Europe where he migrated to the style of modernist informalism. and made paintings that alluded to the cultures of ancient Peru. His work demonstrates versatile artwork of horizontal geometric constructions, expressive paintings and architectural interventions categorized as post minimalism. Received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation award for his art. 'Still Life with Fruit', oil on board (1968), by Juliane Solignac. An engaging yet unusual artwork with vibrant colours, thickly applied with a painting knife. Nonetheless, through the thick paint there is an unfinished quality to the work leaving the impression that the raw canvas - or board in this case - is revealed. Some of the colour seems to have been scored on to the work with an artist's knife leaving lines and creating angles as in a cubist painting. There are layers of paint with no evident brush strokes. One may believe in this instance, Madame Solignac used this technique to create a visual effect which would deliberately have upset traditionalists. Be reminded that the Impressionists were criticised for creating patchy, incomplete works because there were strong notions about the correct way to paint in those days. Picasso once said, 'To finish a work is to kill it.' It is unsure how Mme Solignac would have felt about that. Regardless of this conjecture, the painting is colourful, compelling and rewards the viewer with a curious interest. The work is in fair vintage condition, newly framed with a linen slip. It is signed: 'Julian Solignac 68'. About the Artist: Juliane Solignac (born 1904). Regrettably, there is not much information available about the artist (including what year she may have died). She is referenced as a resident artist in Montmartre in the 1930s, one of only a handful of women in an otherwise sea of male names. In addition, Solignac is mentioned in both French and Dutch references as a creator of fabrics. These may have been more artistic 'tapis' which are hung on the wall like a painting. A Dutch museum references having one of her designs in their collection.
