English early 19th century painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape
Located in Bath, Somerset
A painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape with a horse and rider accompanied by two hounds by a woodland river in the distance. Signed and inscribed 'Melton Mowbray', lower left. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame. John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children. He is known as one of the great British equine artists, perhaps only second to Stubbs in terms of raw ability. Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley that he persuaded John's father to allow him to become the pupil of Benjamin Marshall. Ferneley was so talented that apparently he produced almost perfect copies of his tutor's paintings and they were said to have been indistinguishable from the master’s. Marshall also enrolled him as a student of the Royal Academy Schools. In 1804 Ferneley paid a man named Thomas Harrison...

Figures and Cattle on Woodland Path - French figurative landscape oil painting
Located in London, GB
This charming French Old Master oil painting is by noted French artist Philippe Budelot. Painted circa 1800 the composition is of figures on a woodland path by a lake. In the foreground is a drover on horseback with some cattle and a goat. They are being greeted by the sheep dog of the shepherdess behind them who has sheep scattered amongst the trees. "A Day on the Beach"
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Jim's of Lambertville Fine Art Gallery is proud to present this piece by Martha Walter (1875-1976). Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Martha Walter attended Girls’ High School followed by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that Walter’s artistic talent was discovered. An admiring instructor by the name of William Merritt Chase took young Martha under his wing, giving her both inspiration and direction. She additionally enrolled with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island and in 1903, was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy. This sent Martha Walter on travels to France, Italy, Spain, and Holland, where she attended the Grand Chaumiere and the Academie Julian in Paris. Afterwards, she established a studio on the Rue De Bagneaux in France with several other American women artists. In 1909, Walter won the Mary Smith Prize from the Academy for a portrait she had painted while in Europe. At the onset of World War I, Martha returned home and began painting plein-air subjects, such as Ellis Island, the fishing village of Gloucester, scenes of cheerful children, and the quintessential American beach scenes which have brought her national acclaim. Throughout her life, Walter continued to travel with great regularity capturing in oil and watercolor a wealth of landscapes and cultures across the globe. Martha lived a charmed life...
