"Races", Isle of Man, UK
Located in Hudson, NY
Prices for UNFRAMED. The Robin Rice Gallery proudly announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2018, an annual photography exhibit featuring gallery artists as well as a few newcomers. This year’s opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 6 – 8 PM, and the show will be on view until September 23rd, 2018 Rice has brought together the works of 55 gallery artists and nearly a hundred photographs for this salon-style exhibition. From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery are a mosaic of various size photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “I love the moment when a viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes in’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but reconnects to an experience remembered.” Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before. Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic. This year’s invitational image, Hoop and Ball by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj is from a series of one hundred photographs. Rice chose three photographs from Amodaj’s series to create a triptych on the back wall of her gallery for this exhibition. The invitational image is of a standing semi-nude woman in profile wearing a hoop skirt. Her entire head rests inside of a large white plaster ball that she holds above her. He explained: “I wanted to explore the abstract architectural properties of the hoop skirt, a clothing item with curious geometric form that appears both in nature and in the world of artifice.” Before photographing the model he created numerous figure drawings that helped solidify his vision for the series. Car Race in France, 1913 - Silver Gelatin Black and White Photography, Framed
Located in Atlanta, GA
An original silver gelatin black and white photograph by Press Agency Rol. Car race in Boulogne, France, September 21, 1913. This is a rare photograph of the Sunbeam racer driven by legendary driver Jean Chassagne during the 1913 Coupe de l'Auto in Boulogne. Features: Original Silver Gelatin Print Photograph framed. Press Photograph. Press Agency: Agence ROL Photographer: Unknown Title: Car Race, 1913. Provenance: Private collection. Frame Size: 15.75 in. high (40 cm) x 15.75 in. wide (40 cm) x 0.63 in. deep (1.5 cm). Image Size: 4.61 in. high (11.7 cm) x 6.61 in. wide (16.8 cm). Ink Stamp at the Back: ROL - Paris IXe. There is an unreadable hand-written caption on the negative at the bottom of the photograph. The hand-written caption at the back reads "Chassagne avec Sunbeam" - (Chassagne with Sunbeam). Check the last pictures for images of Jean Chassagne and images of the Sunbeam racecar of 1913. Note: Jean Chassagne (July 26, 1881 - April 13, 1947) was a pioneer submariner, aviator, and French racecar driver active 1906-1930. Chassagne finished third in the 1913 French Grand Prix, won the 1922 Tourist Trophy, and finished second in the 1925 Le Mans Grand Prix - all in Sunbeam motorcars. He finished second in the 1921 Italian Grand Prix with a Ballot, set speed records, and won races at Brooklands and hill climbs international. Chassagne was also associated with the Bentley Boys, who are known for having captured the spirit of the times, partying as hard as they worked. Larger than life, their restless and often reckless love of speed and adventure complemented perfectly the big green Bentleys from Cricklewood. As a result of his association with Bentley Motors, a Chassagne Square in Crewe was named in his honor. Chassagne applied to serve as a pilot during the Great War, but under the request of the British Admiralty, he joined Sunbeam to advise, develop and test aero engines for the war effort. (Credit: Wikipedia) The Coupe de l'Auto in Boulogne took place on 21 September 1913 as a separate event, and Sunbeam set out to defend its previous victory with three cars similar to those used in 1912. Jean Chassagne, Dario Resta, and Kenelm Lee Guinness drove the cars on a tougher course near Boulogne. Unfortunately, the team fell short of the resounding success of the previous year. Both Chassagne and Resta were forced to retire with broken rear axles, but luckily Guinness, the only team member to finish the race, saved the day by coming in 3rd, nine minutes behind the winner at an average speed of 61.45m.p.h. Results: Coupe de l’Auto in Boulogne, Sunbeam 4cyl 3L, Car no. 4, Jean Chassagne and A P Mitchell...

Shop Black and White Photography

There’s a lot to love about black and white photography.

The unique and timeless quality of a black and white photograph accentuates any room. Some might argue that we’re naturally drawn to color photography because it’s the world we know best. This is a shared belief, particularly in the era of camera-phone photography, editing apps and the frenetic immediacy of sharing photos on social media. But when we look at black and white photography, we experience deep, rich shadows and tonal properties in a way that transfixes us. Composition and textures are crisp and engaging. We’re immediately drawn to the subjects of vintage street photography and continue to feel the emotional impact of decades-old photojournalism. The silhouettes of mountains in black and white landscape photography are particularly pronounced, while portrait photography and the skylines of urban cityscapes come to life in monochrome prints.

When decorating with fine photography, keep in mind that some color photographs may not be suitable for every space. However, you can be more daring with black and white photos. The gray tones are classic, sophisticated and generally introduce elegance to any corner of your home, which renders black and white prints amazingly versatile.

Black and white photography adapts to its surroundings like a chameleon might. A single large-scale black and white photograph above the sofa in your living room is going to work with any furniture style, and as some homeowners and designers today are working to introduce more muted tones and neutral palettes to dining rooms and bedrooms, the integration of black and white photography — a hallmark of minimalist decor — is a particularly natural choice for such a setting.

Another advantage to bringing black and white photography into your home is that you can style walls and add depth and character without worrying about disrupting an existing color scheme. Black and white photographs actually harmonize well with accent colors such as yellow, red and green. Your provocative Memphis Group lighting and bold Pierre Paulin seating will pair nicely with the black and white fine nude photography you’ve curated over the years.

Black and white photography also complements a variety of other art. Black and white photos pair well with drawings and etchings in monochromatic hues. They can also form part of specific color schemes. For example, you can place black and white prints in colored picture frames for a pop of color. And while there are no hard and fast rules, it’s best to keep black and white prints separate from color photographs. Color prints stand out in a room more than black and white prints do. Pairing them may detract attention from your black and white photography. Instead, dedicate separate walls or spaces to each.

Once you’ve selected the photography that best fits your space, you’ll need to decide how to hang the images. If you want to hang multiple photos, it’s essential to know how to arrange wall art. A proper arrangement can significantly enhance a living space.

On 1stDibs, explore a vast collection of compelling black and white photography by artists such as Mark Shaw, Jack Mitchell (a photographer you should know), Berenice Abbott and David Yarrow.
