Pop Art Figurative Prints

POP ART STYLE

Perhaps one of the most influential contemporary art movements, Pop art emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.

ORIGINS OF POP ART

CHARACTERISTICS OF POP ART

  • Bold imagery
  • Bright, vivid colors
  • Straightforward concepts
  • Engagement with popular culture
  • Incorporation of everyday objects from advertisements, cartoons, comic books and other popular mass media

POP ARTISTS TO KNOW

ORIGINAL POP ART ON 1STDIBS

The Pop art movement started in the United Kingdom as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period’s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.

Richard Hamilton’s 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style.

Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and making statements about current events. Other key characteristics of Pop art include appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture; use of different media and formats; repetition in imagery and iconography; incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media; hard edges; and ironic and witty treatment of subject matter.

Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture.

Roy Lichtenstein was another prominent Pop artist that was active in the United States. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. Recontextualizing a lowbrow image by importing it into a fine-art context was a trademark of his style. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami further blurred the line between art and popular culture.

Pop art rose to prominence largely through the work of a handful of men creating works that were unemotional and distanced — in other words, stereotypically masculine. However, there were many important female Pop artists, such as Rosalyn Drexler, whose significant contributions to the movement are recognized today. Best known for her work as a playwright and novelist, Drexler also created paintings and collages embodying Pop art themes and stylistic features.

Original Great Teammates Toyota and NFL, 1981 vintage American Football poster
Located in Spokane, WA
Original Toyota Great Teammates Toyota and NFL. Oh, what a feeling! This linen-backed NFL promotional poster was created in 1981 by Toyota. It is in excellent condition, with pinholes in the corners repaired. This is a very difficult original vintage NFL poster to locate and one of the last ones we have been able to document. The poster features a silhouette of a football player composed entirely of football helmets, each adorned with the logo of a different NFL team. This creative design showcases all the teams in the league at the time, making it both a celebration of the sport and a clever piece of advertising. The silhouette of the football player is meticulously crafted using helmets...

Keith Haring 1986 cover art (Keith Haring new school)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Keith Haring Illustration art 1986: Rare seldom available 1980s Keith Haring illustrated New School university catalog featuring Haring double-sided cover art and a printed signature. Quite scarce, especially in good condition as presented here. Offset printed university catalog; Soft cover; 292 pages. 8.5 x 11 inches. Very good overall vintage condition with the exception of surface creasing in a couple of areas; well-preserved with crisp colors. Printed signature on lower left ("1985 Haring"); from an edition of unknown; published 1985/1986 by the New School (New York, NY). Haring credit further appears on the lower left interior of 1st pg: 'Cover art for New School by Keith Haring.' (See the 2nd to last image in listing). Keith Haring rose to prominence in 1980s New York within the East Village art scene alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer. He bridged the gap between the art world and the street, graffiting city subways and sidewalks before committing to a studio practice. Haring united the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists such as Jean DuBuffet as he developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic that comprised energetic, boldly outlined figures against solid or patterned backdrops. His major themes included exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the threat of nuclear holocaust; Haring boldly engaged with social issues, especially after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1987. Today, his work sells for seven figures at auction and has been the subject of solo shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna, among other institutions. Located in New York, NY
Peter Saul Golden Gate Bridge, 1968 Five color lithograph on German etching paper with deckled edges with collectors press chop mark Hand signed, titled and numbered "Artist Proof" lower front; also bears Collector's Press chop mark, and chop mark of master printer Tony Ko Frame Included: floated and framed in the original wood frame Provenance: from the Estate of the legendary California artist, Roy DeForest Accompanied by a copy of the publisher's documentation sheet (see image) Also accompanied by gallery issued Certificate of Guarantee This work is one of three hand signed Artist's Proofs, aside from the regular edition of 50. It is one of Peter Saul's most celebrated prints; the not so subtle at all symbolism speaks for itself, such as the gigantic dollar sign and wagging tongue (money talks loudly), set against San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate bridge. This print does not often appear on the market, as so many from this edition are already in the permanent collection of major museums and institutions. Other examples of this work were featured in the exhibitions: "Print Retrospective, 1966-2010", from September 16 – December 22, 2011 at the Carl Solway Gallery in Ohio, and "Peter Saul: Prints and Drawings, 1960 -1975", from February 26 – April 11, 2009, at The George Adams Gallery...
