Walter Hoyle (1922 - 2000) King's College Chapel, Cambridge (Cambridge Series 1956 - 66) Linocut 72 x 41 cm Signed and inscribed A/P in pencil. Hoyle depicts King's College Chapel as both indomitable and delicate. The bold composition sees the chapel's spires surrounded by a fiery orange light against the black night of the background; at the same time, the western facade looks like it could have been cut from paper, or crafted from lace. Hoyle trained at Beckenham School of Art and the Royal College of Art. At the latter he was strongly influenced by Edward Bawden, one of Britain’s greatest linocut printers. Bawden had been commissioned by the 1951 Festival of Britain to produce a mural for the South Bank, and chose Hoyle to assist on account of his great talent. Hoyle moved to Great Bardfield in Essex, becoming a part of the Great Bardfield group of artists; diverse in style, they created figurative work, in stark contrast to the abstract art of the St Ives artists at the opposite end of the country. Hoyle taught at St Martin’s School of Art from 1951-60, the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1960-64, and the Cambridge School of Art from 1964...

Ms Romley is in her eighties, and currently based in Spain after spending decades in New York City. She was trained at The École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), a distinguished National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France. The artist won several noted awards for her art in her native Spain, and in Paris, France. She worked as an artist and also had a career in advertising, illustration and interior design, in Spain, France and New York. As an artist, she has had solo and group exhibitions first Paris, France, Monaco, Japan, Spain and the US. ETCHINGS Cuca Romley’s etchings of both famous and little places around the world are depicted with a remarkable attention to detail, a style that belies her sophisticated sense of line and color. These etchings capture a bygone era of a city in flux, and a snap shot of a classic image of a place. Each plate is etched with patience and a thoroughness reminiscence of the earlier days of engraving, in exquisite and fine detail. Romley creates her intricate design on the etching ground that covers the copper plate. After the acid has etched the lines into the copper plate she engraves the details into the plate with a buril until the image is completed. For each individual print a master printer must ink the plate and wipe the surface clean. The plate is placed on the bed of the press and the previously wet French Arches paper 100% cotton covering the plate to pass through the press, and that completes the printing process. After the printing ink has dried for a couple of days, the etching is ready for the hand coloring by the artist. There are often more than 30 colors in one of Romley’s images. Each print can take up to 6 hours to color; these colors impart a subtle transparent effect that compliments the delicacy of the line. Every etching in the limited edition is then signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. On CMF Fabiano paper. Size specified is the size of the copper plate, I.e. the image size. David Loggan (1634-1692) King's College Cambridge Engraving 1690 40x51cm Baptised in Danzig in 1634 Loggan's parents were English and Scottish. Studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658) he moved to London in the late 1650s producing the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Marrying in 1663 he moved to Nuffield, Oxfordshire in 1665 to avoid the Plague and was in 1668/9 appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford Colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. Oxonia illustrata was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion he commenced work on his equivalent work for Cambridge, Cantabrigia Illustrata which was finally published in 1690 when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. Oxonia illustrata also includes an engraving of Winchester College (sharing its founder – William of Wykeham – with New College) whilst Cantabrigia illustrata includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder – Henry VIII – with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist of that era as it was not until 1783 that the first living thing (a sheep, named Montauciel ‘climb to the sky’) was sent aloft by the Mongolfier brothers in a balloon. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in smaller numbers and it is thought largely no second edition was produced. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne c. 1708. Edmund Hort New (1871-1931) produced a series of pen-and-ink drawings of views of Oxford that paid homage to Loggan showing the development of the city in the following two hundred years. Printed in one color from one copper plate: black. Biography: Johannes "Jan" Kip (1652/53 in Amsterdam - 1722 in Westminster) was a Dutch draftsman, engraver and print dealer. Together with Leonard Knyff, he made a speciality of engraved views of English country houses. Kip was a pupil of Bastiaen Stopendaal (1636–1707), from 1668 to 1670, before setting up on his own; his earliest dated engravings are from 1672. In April 1680, at the age of 27, he married Elisabeth Breda in Amsterdam. After producing works for the court of William of Orange in Amsterdam, Kip followed William and Mary to London and settled in St. John Street in Farringdon, where he conducted a thriving printselling business. He also worked for various London publishers producing engravings after such artists as Francis Barlow (c. 1626–1704) and Caius Gabriel Cibber (1630–1700), largely for book illustrations. He made several engraved plates for Awnsham & John Churchill's "A Collection of Voyages & Travels" (first published 1704). He signed the African scenes in volume V of the 1732 edition as "J. Kip". His most important works were the large fold-out folio illustrations for "Britannia Illustrata", 1708; for the 65 folio plates he engraved for the antiquary Sir Robert Atkyns, "The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire", 1712 (1st edition); and for "Le Nouveau Théâtre de la Grande Bretagne ou description exacte des palais de la Reine, et des Maisons les plus considerables des des Seigneurs & des Gentilshommes de la Grande Bretagne", 1715, an extended reprint in collaboration with other artists. The linked careers of Jan Kip and Leonard Knyff made a specialty of engraved views of English country houses, represented in detail from the bird's-eye view, a pictorial convention for topography. Their major work was "Britannia Illustrata: Or Views of Several of the Queens Palaces, as Also of the Principal seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain, Curiously Engraven on 80 Copper Plates", London (1707, published in the winter of 1708–9). The volume is among the most important English topographical publications of the 18th century.
