This artwork represents the Resaurrection of God after his Death. According to the Scriptures, in fact the God raised up after three days. In the representation there are two figures that spread light and brightness. The spontaneous Bulletism process and the richiamo colors in the image truly highlight Dali’s range of creativity and use of space. The lithograph is part of the imponent work Biblia Sacra vulgatæ editionis published by Rizzoli-Mediolani between 1967 and 1969. It was illustrated by Salvador Dalí with a suite of 105 colored lithographs after water-color artworks. The paper sheets are signed and dated on plate, and each of them comes with a Japanese paper tissue with a printed biblical quotation. In 1963, Biblia Sacra was commissioned by Giuseppe Albaretto, a very pious man, who was one of Dalí’s closest friends and patrons between the 1950s and the 1960s. Giuseppe Albaretto and his wife Mara commissioned several of Dalí's works, and became important publishers of his etchings and lithographs, including the Biblia Sacra.
Through these commissions, Albaretto hoped that Dalí would reconcile with religion. The friendship between the Albarettos and Salvador Dalì provided the art world with some of the most spectacular Surrealist artworks. In the preface of the work, the publisher asserts that the lithographs “configure, in both a universal and a personal way, the dynamic vision that characterizes the relationship between men and God”.
Salvador Dalí (Figueres, 1904 – Figueres, 1989) is considered one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the XX century and the founding father of Surrealism. In the course of his long career, he successfully experimented with sculpture, fashion, writing, and filmmaking. In his early use of organic morphology, his work bears the stamp of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. His work is also characterized by a fascination with classical art, manifested in the realistic style and religious symbolism of his latest works. Dalí was born near Barcelona to a middle class family. He soon demonstrated an interest in art, and, at the age of 18, he attended the Special Painting, Sculpture and Engraving School of San Fernando in Madrid. NICOLAS DE STAEL (1914-1955) was a French painter of Russian origin known for his use of a thick impasto and his highly abstract landscape painting. He also worked with collage, illustration and textiles. Known for his abstract landscapes and still lifes that uniquely blend colour, form and texture, Nicolas de Staël was fascinated by the world’s many spectacles and documented them through his art. De Staël was born in 1914 into an aristocratic family in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His father served as a cavalry general under Tsar Nicholas II and the family was forced to flee after the Russian Revolution. Both Nicolas’s parents died in the early 1920s, meaning he and his siblings were raised by a foster family in Brussels where he would begin his formal art education at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. De Staël’s early work was influenced by the European avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, including Cubism and Fauvism. However, he soon developed his own distinctive style with thick impasto and a bold use of colour. His early paintings, often sombre in tone, gradually evolved into more vibrant and dynamic compositions, reflecting his growing interest in the emotional and expressive potential of colour and form. In 1938 de Staël had moved to France, where he became an integral part of the post-war Parisian art scene. Having worked initially in the atelier of Fernand Léger, de Staël’s circle of friends came to include Sonia Delaunay, Le Corbusier and Jean Arp, who encouraged his tendencies towards abstract work. His work during this period marked a significant departure from traditional representation, moving towards abstraction while maintaining a strong sense of structure and form. De Staël's paintings from this era showcase his ability to balance abstraction with figuration, using broad, gestural strokes and a vibrant palette to convey movement and energy. The lithographic process begins by drawing on or painting on a stone surface with an oil-based substance, such as a greasy crayon or tusche (an oily wash). The stone is then covered with water, which is repelled by the oily areas. Oil-based ink is then applied to the wet stone, adhering only to the oily image. The stone is then covered with a sheet of paper and run through a press.
Lithographs tend to be more painterly than other printing techniques such as woodcut printmaking and drypoint, and many postwar and contemporary painters have collaborated with lithographic workshops to push their practices in new directions. The collection of vintage lithographs on 1stDibs includes works by Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Peter Max, Jasper Johns and other artists.
Groundbreaking print studios like Gemini began to crop up in the mid-20th century. These included Tamarind, first founded as a lithography shop in Los Angeles; ULAE on New York’s Long Island; and Crown Point Press in San Francisco. The timing was due to the fact that many artists had developed a taste for printmaking during the Great Depression via the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which opened print shops for unemployed artists to help create useful and uplifting messages that could be widely disseminated.
