Virginia Dehn
Virginia Dehn in her studio in Santa Fe
Virginia Dehn (née Engleman) (October 26, 1922 – July 28, 2005) was an American painter and printmaker. Her work was known for its interpretation of natural themes in almost abstract forms. She exhibited in shows and galleries throughout the U.S. Her paintings are included in many public collections.
Life
Dehn was born in Nevada, Missouri on October 26, 1922.] Raised in Hamden, Connecticut, she studied at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri before moving to New York City. She met the artist Adolf Dehn while working at the Art Students League. They married in November 1947. The two artists worked side by side for many years, part of a group of artists who influenced the history of 20th century American art. Their Chelsea brownstone was a place where artists, writers, and intellectuals often gathered.
Early career
Virginia Dehn studied art at Stephens College in Missouri before continuing her art education at the Traphagen School of Design, and, later, the Art Students League, both located in New York City. In the mid-1940s while working at the Associated American Artists gallery, she met lithographer...

"Bouquet (peony, yellow, jade)" is a unique collagraph print from a series published by Manneken Press in 2019. In collagraph printmaking the artist adds to the plate to create the image rather than carving into it, as in relief printing, or etching into it, as in intaglio printing. Howe painted the image of a bouquet of flowers in a vase with sweeping, fluid brushstrokes strokes, directly onto the plate, using a thick gel medium. Carborundum grit was added to create the texture necessary to hold the ink. Different colors were used for each impression printed from the plate, creating a series of unique but related prints.
Like all of Howe's works, her monotypes have a strong, vibrant, spontaneous energy and a sensuous sensibility. Referencing her personal garden located in the Hudson Valley, flowers dissolve into abstract flurries of brush marks and fields of commingled colors. The artist balances abstraction with representation in gestural prints which are process-based while retaining an affinity with the observed subject matter. Catherine Howe is widely admired for her painterly works that reference both the baroque and nature. Drawing from nature, Howe’s paintings is influenced by New York School abstraction, as well as rococo and 17th century Dutch still life paintings.

bring us into our own world, we seek something that stirs within us a memory or a dream.
Traditionally, tapestries are a storytelling media as well as décor. This particular work is
constructed from commercially printed tapestries acquired from a Chinese supplier during the
pandemic. These tell a story of arrested, yet ample, desire.
On one side of the piece we see a sunrise from a beach with palm trees. Gently folded over to the right is a second tapestry. Still-life art, which includes work produced in media such as painting, photography, video and more, is a popular genre in Western art. However, the depiction of still life in color goes back to Ancient Egypt, where paintings on the interior walls of tombs portrayed the objects — such as food — that a person would take into the afterlife. Ancient Greek and Roman mosaics and pottery also often depicted food. Indeed, popular still-life prints often feature food, flowers or man-made objects. By definition, still-life art represents anything that is considered inanimate.
During the Middle Ages, the still life genre was adapted by artists who illustrated religious manuscripts. A common theme of these still-life paintings is the reminder that life is fleeting. This is especially true of vanitas, a kind of still life with roots in the Netherlands during the 17th century, which was built on themes such as death and decay and featured skulls and objects such as rotten fruit. In northern Europe during the 1600s, painters consulted botanical texts to accurately depict the flowers that were the subject of their work.
While early examples were primarily figurative, you can find still lifes that belong to different schools and styles of painting and printmaking, such as Cubism, Impressionism and contemporary art.
Leonardo da Vinci’s penchant for observing phenomena in nature and filling notebooks with drawings and notes helped him improve as an artist of still-life paintings. Vincent van Gogh, an artist who made a couple of the most expensive paintings ever sold, carried out rich experiments with color over the course of painting hundreds of still lifes, and we can argue that Campbell’s Soup Cans (1961–62) by Andy Warhol counts as still-life art.
Still-life art enthusiasts and collectors of Warhol prints have lots of reasons to love the cultural icon — when Warhol brought the image of a Campbell’s soup can out of the supermarket and into the studio, in 1961, he secured his legacy as a radical contemporary artist. After Warhol painted the soup cans, he realized that he could more readily achieve the mass-produced aesthetic he was seeking with silkscreens, also called screen-prints, and he began experimenting with silkscreening on canvas. He used the technique to print paintings of Coke bottles and dollar bills (both in 1962), as well as his treasured Brillo box sculptures (1964).
