Polychrome Marble Sculpture Bust Of Emperor Nero After The Antique Grand Tour

after 1900

$9,611.34

About

a superb and impressive sculpture carved in a rare and specimen selection of marbles: Statuary white marble for the head of the emperor Nero, a Cipollino green Marble for the armor and the elegant Grey Bardiglio for the base. Created in grand tour style size , this bust represent a classical example of the Roman sculpture Heritage. Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was the fifth Roman emperor, ruling from 54 to 68. His infamous reign is usually associated with tyranny, extravagance, and debauchery. Nero, originally named Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, belonged to the Julio-Claudian dynasty, and was adopted as heir by the emperor Claudius, his great-uncle and stepfather. Nero succeeded Claudius while not yet aged 17, and his mother, Agrippina, tried to dominate his early life and decisions, but Nero cast her off and had her killed five years into his reign. The Grand Tour was the 17th- and 18th-century custom of a traditional trip through Europe undertaken by upper-class young European men of sufficient means and rank (typically accompanied by a chaperone, such as a family member) when they had come of age (about 21 years old).
