Alongside, 1941 Tod Lindenmuth (American, 1885-1976) Color Woodblock Print 9 x 7 inches 19.75 x 14.5 inches with frame Signed Lower Right Titled and Dated Lower Left A founder of the Provincetown Art Association and one of the original Provincetown Printers, Tod Lindenmuth was a semi-abstract painter and graphic artist who did much to promote modernist styles. Although he was much influenced by Abstract Expressionism, his subject matter was realistic enough to be recognizable. He did linoleum cuts and was one of the first to work with that medium, and towards the end of his life, he experimented with collage. In the 1930s, he had commissions for the Public Works of Art Project and the Works Progress Administration. Lindenmuth was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He studied with Robert Henri at the New York School of Art in Manhattan, and in Provincetown with E. Ambrose Webster and George Elmer Browne. He first exhibited in Provincetown in 1915, and between 1917 and 1928 served on the jury for the Provincetown Art Association's 'First Modernistic Exhibition". A fine impression, with vibrant, fresh colors, on heavy tan wove paper, with full margins (11/16 to 1 1/2 inches). Tack holes in the four margin corners, well away from the image, otherwise in excellent condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Scarce. Image size 8 5/8 x 14 1/16 inches (219 x 357 mm); sheet size 11 1/16 x 15 1/2 inches (281 x 393 mm). Another of McConnell's mid-century modernist, jazz-inspired serigraphs, 'Combo', is featured in the British Museum's 2008 publication (and traveling exhibition) 'The American Scene: Prints from Hopper to Pollock'. ABOUT THE IMAGE "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate", often simply "Sister Kate", is an up-tempo jazz dance song, written by Armand J. Piron and published in 1922. The lyrics of the song are narrated in the first person by Kate's sister, who sings about Kate's impressive dancing skill and her wish to be able to emulate it. She laments that she's not quite "up to date", but believes that dancing like "Sister Kate" will rectify this, and she will be able to impress "all the boys in the neighborhood" like her sister. Hand signed and numbered Aquatint Etching Susan Hall lives and works in Point Reyes Station, California, a town in the heart of the Point Reyes National Seashore. This pristine wilderness area is dominated by a mosaic of bays and ocean, rolling grass lands and forests. It is inhabited by a diversity of wildlife, including over 450 species of birds, mountains lions, deer, bobcats, foxes, and elk. Ms. Hall who is a native of this area returned after spending twenty years in New York City. In her book, “Painting Point Reyes”, Hall says, “Point Reyes is the center of my painting life. Point Reyes has been my life and when I haven’t lived here, it has been an underground stream that spoke to me in dreams and visions.” While living and painting in New York City, Ms. Hall exhibited her work widely in museums and galleries.
