Impressionist Art

IMPRESSIONIST STYLE

Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionist art embraced loose brushwork and plein-air painting to respond to the movement of daily life. Although the pioneers of the Impressionist movement — Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir — are now household names, their work was a radical break with an art scene led and shaped by academic traditions for around two centuries. These academies had oversight of a curriculum that emphasized formal drawing, painting and sculpting techniques and historical themes.

The French Impressionists were influenced by a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who painted what they witnessed in nature. The rejection of pieces by these artists and the later Impressionists from the salons culminated in a watershed 1874 exhibition in Paris that was staged outside of the juried systems. After a work of Monet’s was derided by a critic as an unfinished “impression,” the term was taken as a celebration of their shared interest in capturing fleeting moments as subject matter, whether the shifting weather on rural landscapes or the frenzy of an urban crowd. Rather than the exacting realism of the academic tradition, Impressionist paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings represented how an artist saw a world in motion.

Many Impressionist painters were inspired by the perspectives in imported Japanese prints alongside these shifts in European painting — Édouard Manet drew on ukiyo-e woodblock prints and depicted Japanese design in his Portrait of Émile Zola, for example. American artists such as Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase, who studied abroad, were impacted by the work of the French artists, and by the late 19th century American Impressionism had its own distinct aesthetics with painters responding to the rapid modernization of cities through quickly created works that were vivid with color and light.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Le Chapeau Épinglé (2e planche).
Located in Los Angeles, CA
PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR Le Chapeau Épinglé (2e planche). Color lithograph, 1898. 600x488 mm; 23 5/8x19 1/4 inches, full margins. Edition of 200. With the second printed signature in the stone, lower left. Printed by Auguste Clot, Paris. Published by Vollard, Paris. A very good impression of this important lithograph with strong colors. Renoir (1841-1919) was, along with Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, a founder of the Société Anonyme Coopérative des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs and a key organizer of the 1870s Impressionist exhibitions. He is best known for his renditions of the sensuous and monumental bathing nudes that he produced from the 1880s onward, many of which were inspired by the works of Titian, Rubens, and 18th-century French painters such as Boucher and Fragonard. Like many of his contemporaries, Renoir embraced printmaking as a medium that allowed for more freedom of expression and experimentation. Ambroise Vollard, the eminent Parisian dealer and publisher, and Auguste Clot, the famed lithography printer, were both extremely instrumental in Renoir's foray into printmaking. They greatly encouraged and facilitated his practice of the medium. Vollard met Renoir during the height of Renoir's career and saw the opportunity for lithography to help disseminate the artist's ever popular work, and Clot worked closely with Renoir to masterfully capture the delicate quality of his pastels in color lithography. Renoir began producing lithographs and etchings in the late 1880s and created an oeuvre over the following two decades consisting of 25 etchings and 29 lithographs, many of them commissioned for various albums or books. His most famous prints reproduce popular compositions he had established in earlier paintings. The current lot is based on an 1893 oil and pastel painting which represents the artist Berthe Morisot's daughter pinning a flower on her cousin's hat. The same subject was reproduced in a series of etchings by Renoir...

Impressionist Scottish Landscape painting 'Footbridge' by George Houston
Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
'Footbridge' is an Impressionist pastoral scene of the Scottish landscape, most likely painted in the early 20th Century. The colour palette is beautifully autumnal and the footbridge speaks of centuries gone by. George Houston was born in Dalry in 1869 and educated at Saltcoats Public School and Glasgow School of Art. He lived most of his life in Dalry painting his native Ayrshire but he also maintained a studio in Glasgow and spent time painting in the Inner Hebrides and around Loch Fyne. Houston became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and then an Academician in 1925. He died in Dalry in 1947. Impressionist Scottish Landscape...

"Paysage avec Chateau et Cours d'Eau" Landscape with Castle and Stream
By Louis Gabriel Moreau
Located in Houston, TX
Lovely soft gouache landscape scene titled "Paysage avec Chateau et Cours d'Eau" (Landscape with Castle and Stream) by artist Louis Gabriel Moreau in 1787. Framed in gold gilt frame. Artist Biography: Louis Gabriel Moreau, a gifted draughtsman, etcher and painter of landscapes, had a prodigious career. After studying with Pierre-Antoine de Machy, who specialized in painting Grand Tour themes - landscapes redolent with Classical ruins and tromp-l'oeil architectural scenes, he went on to become a member of the Academie de St. Luc, artist to Comte d'Artois (later King Charles X), and curator of the National Museum in Paris. Moreau, a master of watercolors and gouaches, combined the picturesque architectures of his master de Machy with naturalistically, almost plein-air-rendered, topographical landscapes in the Ile-de-France region just outside of Paris. Moreau's fascination with the effects of light at different times of the day precipitated his use of a lighter palette, characterized by warm yellows and verdant foliage punctuated by deep ultramarine blues instead of browns. Moreau's predilection for natural light made him equally successful following the French Revolution, in which the Third Estate toppled the landed gentry and their royal established academies. Before 1789, French castles and estates in lush settings of abundance were Moreau's preferred subject; the painting offered exemplifies this style - a style upon which he established himself as an artist for nearly twenty-five years exhibiting annually at the Academie de St. Luc. Following the Revolution, Moreau's, bright palette and light drenched compositions with voluminous clouds and ruins dotting the low horizon remained; his subjects, on the other hand, became distinctly more humble, showcasing the daily life of farmers, fishermen, modest structures and gardens. Both Moreau's pre- and post-Revolutionary paintings...
