How Much is a 22k Gold Gold Necklace?
Why Gold Shines in Jewelry Craftsmanship
Gold is the feel-good metal, the serotonin of jewelry. Wear vintage and antique gold necklaces, watches, gold bracelets or gold rings and you feel happy, you feel dressed, you feel, well, yourself.
Gold, especially yellow gold, with its rich patina and ancient pedigree going back thousands of years, is the steady standby, the well-mannered metal of choice. Any discussion of this lustrous metal comes down to a basic truth: Gold is elementary, my dear. Gold jewelry that couples the mystique of the metal with superb design and craftsmanship achieves the status of an enduring classic. Many luxury houses have given us some of our most treasured and lasting examples of gold jewelry over the years.
Since its founding, in 1837, Tiffany & Co. has built its reputation on its company jewelry as well as its coterie of boutique designers, which has included Jean Schlumberger, Donald Claflin, Angela Cummings and Elsa Peretti. There are numerous gold Tiffany classics worth citing. Some are accented with gemstones, but all stand out for their design and the workmanship displayed.
For the woman who prefers a minimalist look, the Tiffany & Co. twist bangle (thin, slightly ovoid) is stylishly simple. For Cummings devotees, signature pieces feature hard stone inlay, such as her pairs of gold ear clips inlaid with black jade (a play on the classic Chanel black and tan), or bangles whose design recalls ocean waves, with undulating lines of lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl. And just about any design by the great Jean Schlumberger is by definition a classic.
Even had he eschewed stones and diamonds, Southern-born David Webb would be hailed for the vast arsenal of heavy gold jewelry he designed. Gold, usually hammered or textured in some manner, defines great David Webb jewelry. The self-taught jeweler made very au courant pieces while drawing inspiration from ancient and out-of-the-way sources — East meets West in the commanding gold necklaces made by Webb in the early 1970s. The same could be said for his endlessly varied gold cuffs.
In Europe, many houses have given us gold jewelry that sets the highest standard for excellence, pieces that were highly sought after when they were made and continue to be so.
Numerous designs from Cartier are homages to gold. There are the classic Trinity rings, necklaces and bracelets — trifectas of yellow, white and rose gold. As a testament to the power of love, consider the endurance of the Cartier Love bracelet.
Aldo Cipullo, Cartier’s top in-house designer from the late 1960s into the early ’70s, made history in 1969 with the Love bracelet. Cipullo frequently said that the Love bracelet was born of a sleepless night contemplating a love affair gone wrong and his realization that “the only remnants he possessed of the romance were memories.” He distilled the urge to keep a loved one close into a slim 18-karat gold bangle.
BVLGARI and its coin jewelry, gemme nummarie, hit the jackpot when the line launched in the 1960s. The line has been perennially popular. BVLGARI coin jewelry features ancient Greek and Roman coins embedded in striking gold mounts, usually hung on thick link necklaces of varying lengths. In the 1970s, BVLGARI introduced the Tubogas line, most often made in yellow gold. The Tubogas watches are classics, and then there is the Serpenti, the house's outstanding snake-themed watches and bracelets.
A collection called Monete that incorporated the gold coins is one of several iconic BVLGARI lines that debuted in the 1970s and ’80s, catering to a new generation of empowered women. Just as designers like Halston and Yves Saint Laurent were popularizing fuss-free ready-to-wear fashion for women on the go, BVLGARI offered jewels to be lived in.
Since Van Cleef & Arpels opened its Place Vendôme doors in 1906, collection after collection of jewelry classics have enchanted the public. As predominantly expressed in a honeycomb of gold, there is the Ludo watch and accessories, circa the 1920s, and the golden Zip necklace, 1951, whose ingenious transformation of the traditional zipper was originally proposed by the Duchess of Windsor. Van Cleef's Alhambra, with its Moroccan motif, was introduced in 1968 and from the start its popularity pivoted on royalty and celebrity status. It remains one of VCA’s most popular and collected styles.
Mention must be made of Buccellati, whose name is synonymous with gold so finely spun that it suggests tapestry. The house’s many gold bracelets, typically embellished with a few or many diamonds, signified taste and distinction and are always in favor on the secondary market. Other important mid-20th-century houses known for their gold-themed jewelry include Hermès and Ilias Lalaounis.

Finding the Right Necklaces for You
We are fortunate to know much of the world’s long and dazzling history of necklaces, as this type of jewelry was so treasured that it was frequently buried with its owners. Today, Van Cleef necklaces, Tiffany necklaces and Cartier necklaces are some of the most popularly searched designer necklaces on 1stDibs.
Lapis lazuli beads adorned necklaces unearthed from the royal graves at the ancient Iraqi civilization of Sumer, while the excavation of King Tut’s burial chamber revealed a sense of style that led to a frenzy of Art Deco designs, with artisans of the 1920s seeking to emulate the elegant work crafted by Ancient Egypt’s goldsmiths and jewelry makers.
In ancient times, pendant necklaces worn by royalty and nobles conferred wealth and prestige. Today, wearing jewelry is about personal expression: Luxury diamond necklaces exude confidence and can symbolize the celebratory nature of a deep romantic relationship, while paper-clip chain-link necklaces designed by the likes of goldsmith Faye Kim are firmly planted in the past as well as the present. Kim works exclusively with eco-friendly gold, and these fashionable, fun accessories owe to the design of 19th-century watch fobs.
For some, necklaces are thought of as being a solely feminine piece, but this widely loved accessory has been gender-neutral for eons. In fact, just as women rarely took to wearing a single necklace during the Renaissance, men of the era layered chains and valuable pendants atop their bejeweled clothing. In modern times, the free-spirited hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s saw costume-jewelry designers celebrating self-expression through colorful multistrand necklaces and no shortage of beads, which were worn by anyone and everyone.
Even after all of these years, the necklace remains an irrefutable staple of any complete outfit. Although new trends in jewelry are constantly emerging, the glamour and beauty of the past continue to inform modern styles and designs. In a way, the cyclical history of the necklace differs little from its familiar looped form: The celebrated French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels found much inspiration in King Tut, and, now, their Alhambra collection is a go-to for modern royals. Vintage David Webb necklaces — whose work landed him on the cover of Vogue in 1950, two years after opening his Manhattan shop — were likely inspired by the ornamental styles of ancient Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt.
On 1stDibs, browse top designers like Dior, Chanel and Bulgari, or shop by your favorite style, from eye-catching choker necklaces to understated links to pearl necklaces and more.
- Is there 22K gold jewelry?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, 22k gold does exist and it even exists in jewelry, but it’s not very common. 24k is pure gold and it’s simply too soft for jewelry and practical use, 18k is a very popular version of gold for jewelry, but it is possible to find 22k gold jewelry. Find an assortment of gold jewelry from the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, 22k gold is not too soft for jewelry, but it’s considered too soft for everyday wear. You may find some special pieces that are made of 22k gold or that have 22k gold in them, especially antique jewelry, but regular wear will quickly cause 22k gold to become misshapen and scratched. Shop a collection of 22k gold jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021Twenty-two karat gold denotes that more than 91 percent of the metal is gold. Other metals are present to render the texture of the gold more durable. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique and vintage gold jewelry.
- Is 19K gold real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, 19 karat gold is real gold and is made of 19 parts gold and five parts other metals. 19 karat gold is usually mixed with copper, zinc, silver, palladium and nickel to increase durability. You’ll find a wide variety of 19 karat gold jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024The difference between 24K gold and 18K gold is how much pure gold the metals contain. Something made of 24-karat gold is 99.9% pure gold, while 18-karat gold items are 75% gold and 25% alloy metals. Generally, 18-karat gold is more durable and scratch-resistant due to the presence of alloy metals. On the other hand, 24-karat gold tends to be more richly colored and expensive. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of gold jewelry.
- What is 24k gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 202124k gold is pure gold. Pure gold means 24 out of the 24 karats of an item are gold.
- What is 14K gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024The term 14K gold, or 14-karat gold, refers to a type of gold alloy. The term alloy means a metal made of two or more base metals. In the case of 14-karat gold, 58.5% of the content is pure gold, and the remaining 41.5% is alloy metal. Due to the strength of the metal, many jewelry makers use 14-karat gold in their pieces. Find a wide variety of 14-karat gold jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021How much a 14k gold necklace should cost will depend on its value on the precious metals market, as it changes every day. The average cost of 14k gold should be around $31 according to the market for gold. A 14k gold necklace’s value will depend on craftsmanship, origin, condition and other factors that include the market price. Find antique and vintage gold necklaces on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024To tell if a 14K gold necklace is real, place a magnet on it. If you notice a strong attraction, the piece is unlikely to be genuine 14-karat gold because the gold alloy is not magnetic. A certified appraiser or experienced jeweler can also help you assess whether your piece is real gold. Find a wide variety of gold necklaces on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 30, 2024Yes, your 14K gold necklace may be worth something. Because it contains some pure gold, your necklace can likely be sold for scrap metal. How much you can expect to receive for it will depend on its weight and the current market conditions. Your necklace could potentially have value beyond the going price for 14-karat gold, depending on its age, style, maker, condition and other factors. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable jeweler can give you an idea of how much your piece may be worth. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of gold necklaces.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024How much a 14K gold necklace is worth varies. Like other gold alloys, 14-karat gold has scrap value as a precious metal. The price per ounce of gold varies over time, and the thickness and length of your necklace will determine how much you can expect to be paid for it. Your necklace may have value beyond the going rate for 14-karat gold as well, depending on its age, style, maker and condition. You may want to consider having a certified appraiser or experienced jeweler evaluate your piece to give you an idea of its potential value. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of gold necklaces.
- What is my gold necklace worth?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2024How much your gold necklace is worth will depend on a few factors. Gold has value on its own as scrap metal. Usually, scrap metal pricing depends on the weight of gold and the type of alloy, and prices vary over time. Some gold necklaces may be worth more than the going rate due to their age, maker, style, type and condition. As a result, you may wish to have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable jeweler examine your necklace and tell you how much it may be worth before selling it to a scrap dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of gold necklaces.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024The difference between 14K gold and 14K Italian gold is the place of production. Both types of jewelry feature 14-karat gold, an alloy that is 58.3% gold and 41.7% alloy metals. However, Italian gold pieces come specifically from artisans, workshops and factories located in Italy. You can find 14-karat gold made in many other countries. Shop a diverse assortment of gold jewelry on 1stDibs.
- Is 18K gold dipped real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, gold dipped, also known as gold plated, pieces are considered real gold. The process coats a piece of metal or alloy with a layer of gold for a gold finish. Shop a collection of 18 karat gold jewelry, solid and dipped, on 1stDibs.
- Is a 14K gold chain real gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, a 14 karat gold chain is real gold and made of 14 parts gold and ten parts other metals. A 14 karat gold is usually mixed with copper, zinc, silver, palladium and nickel to increase durability. Browse a range of 14 karat gold jewelry, including chains, on 1stDibs.
- Is a Krugerrand 24k gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, a Krugerrand coin is not 24 karat gold but rather a 22 karat gold coin. The other two parts of the coin are a copper alloy used to increase the coin’s durability, scratch resistance and give the coin a slightly orange-gold hue. Shop a wide selection of collectible Krugerrand coins on 1stDibs.
- Is 12K gold real?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024Yes, 12K gold is real, but that doesn't mean that the material is pure gold. 12K gold is actually an alloy that is 50% pure gold and 50% other metals. The resulting alloy is highly durable and resistant to scratching and fading. Its hardness makes it difficult to shape into rings, so most 12K gold jewelry consists of necklaces and earrings. On 1stDibs, explore a wide variety of gold jewelry.
- Is 24k solid gold?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Because a karat is 1/24 part of pure gold by weight, 24K gold is the purest type of gold available and extremely valuable.
- Is 10k gold real?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2024Yes, 10k gold is real. However, it is not pure gold. Instead, 10-karat gold is an alloy that is 41.7% gold and 58.3% base metal. Its content makes 10K gold a strong, durable material and generally allows pieces produced from it to be sold at lower price points than those crafted out of 14- and 18-karat gold. Shop a wide variety of gold jewelry on 1stDibs.
- Is 10k gold good?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 13, 2024Yes, 10k gold is good. Its strongest selling point is its durability. Because it consists primarily of alloy metals, 10-karat gold is highly resistant to wear and tear. However, its value is less than alloys that contain more pure gold, like 14-karat and 18-karat varieties. Its color also typically isn't as rich as alternatives that feature more pure gold. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of gold jewelry.
