Kim Seungwoo Art

b. 1976

Kim Seungwoo is a contemporary Korean sculptor, based in Seoul, South Korea, famous for his sculptures made of coins. Seungwoo says, "I stack the coins one by one without taking a break to make a cubic object. The repetitive actions endlessly are a time of tiredness and hardship. I do rework on it to find the desired shape and find out another way as it was not matched with my estimation. Getting an answer to the changes and orders of new shape and satisfaction obtained as such becomes energy throughout making the work. The actions and time relieve the worry on the skill and harmony of the shape while working as the image of the material is powerful. I am attracted to ecstasy at the moment by moment when the work reveals its form slowly as if the result is broken out of the egg. I am talking about money. I try to make the coin itself to be a workpiece not as a function of money and to make the work to be coined. It is a consideration of the pros and cons of the money and the viewpoints such as the social ambition and value are listed through my works."

“Tiny Celadon Green Jacket, ” Steel Sculpture
By Gordon Chandler
Located in Chicago, IL
Upon discovering a weathered steel drum that had been warped to resemble the sleeve of a garment, artist Gordon Chandler was inspired to embark on a series of kimono sculptures formed from found metal scraps. With an eye to the aesthetic possibilities of this humble material, Chandler invests the reclaimed steel with sculptural fluidity and a wry sense of form. Flattened with the center portion rolled out and the sides left open, this discarded barrel takes on the look of a miniature jacket. Coated with a mint green finish, the eroded metal appears as draped fabric, folded back to form a simple collar. The sculpture is finished with the artist's initials stamped...
