Dughet Woodland Landscape Old master Paint Oil on canvas 17th Century Italy Art
By Gaspard Dughet, called Gaspard Poussin (Rome 1615 - 1675)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Gaspard Dughet, called Gaspard Poussin (Rome 1615 - 1675) - attributable to Wooded landscape of the Roman countryside with the Archangel Raphael and Tobiolo oil painting on canvas second half of the 17th century (cm.) 75 x 98, with frame 91 x 115 On the back old label inscribed "Monte dei Paschi di Siena" The painting has characters clearly linked to the Roman culture of the seventeenth century and, in particular, to the works of Gaspard Dughet, an author who was able to achieve surprising results in describing the Lazio countryside with a unique grace and sensitivity. Brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin, of whom he was a pupil, Dughet is to be considered among the most important landscape painters of the Roman Baroque, highly sought after and celebrated by the aristocracy, a reference model for the artists of the following generation, such as Crescenzo Onofri, Jan Frans van Bloemen and Andrea Locatelli...

Nacre, plea and entice 5 (grid painting abstract wood round panel white blue art
Located in Quebec, Quebec
"Nacre, plea and entice 5" explores a singular and cohesive orchestration of aerosol painting, pyrography and sanding techniques on wood. The artist engages her work with notions of repetition, mark-making and blur derived from the pictorial works of artists Jack Whitten, Sterling Ruby and Gerhard Richter. This complex but ethereal painting solicits our visual perception by suggesting a discoverable lattice; gestural motifs seem to emerge out of an optically intricate grid. The color palette in this piece is natural but lively, composed of; skin tones, Sienna, char brown...

'Santa Maria della Salute at Sunset', Venice, Smithsonian Museum, BMFA, De Young
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Initialed lower right, 'K.W.' for Katherine Westphal (American, 1919-2018) and painted circa 1965; additionally bearing label, verso, inscribed with artist's name and titled 'Venice'. Framed Dimensions: 33.25 x 2 x 29 Inches A large, Post-Impressionist oil showing a view of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute on the Punte della Dogana with half-a-dozen gondolas rocking on the gentle swell of the Guidecca. A vibrant modernist vedute by this well-listed California woman artist who shows the iconic Baroque church as if suspended in golden light, both reflecting the sunset and, itself, reflected in the shimmering waters. Born in Los Angeles, Katherine Westphal first attended Los Angeles City College and, subsequently, the University of California at Berkeley where she studied painting and art history and received both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. In 1943, she was awarded the Phelan Travelling Scholarship which funded her travel to Mexico where she visited the studios of both David Siquieros and Diego Rivera, an experience that confirmed her lifelong preference for Modernist principles in her work. Over the course of a long and multi-faceted career, Westphal exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. In addition to her career as a fine artist, Westphal wrote extensively on art theory and also became a beloved teacher. In 1966, she agreed to teach a one-quarter design class at the University of California, Davis. She stayed on, becoming a tenured faculty member in 1968, a full professor in 1975 and, finally, retiring in 1979 as Professor Emeritus. Katherine Westphal’s work is held in the permanent collections of numerous prominent American museums including the Smithsonian Museum...

10 Statues of Liberty, Paris
Located in New York, NY
Andy Warhol 10 Statues of Liberty, Paris, 1986 Offset Lithograph 38 3/4 × 27 inches Edition of 500 Published by: Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris Unframed This oversized vintage Warhol exhibition poster was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Andy Warhol: 10 Statues of Liberty" at Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris, 8 April - 30 May, 1986. The print was published in an edition of fewer than 500, and is considered especially collectible as it was a lifetime edition for an exhibition that Warhol attended. It was printed in 1986, the year before Warhol died. Warhol's renditions of the Statue of Liberty have been the inspiration in both subject matter and style of many subsequent generations of Pop artists, including Peter Max's ubiquitous Statues of Liberty. Warhol reprised his successful 1960s series based on Lady Liberty, with 10 of the large-scaled Camouflage Statue of Liberty paintings based on a close-up enlargement of the figure’s head. These later Liberty works commemorated the 100th anniversary of the gift of the statue from France to America, according to Warhol biographer Victor Bockris. Warhol traveled to Paris in March that same year for the debut of this body of work at Galerie Lavignes-Bastille. The show was initially an uncharacteristic and inexplicable failure. “It was a great show,” recalled the dealer Patrice...

Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.

A variety of authentic art is available on 1stDibs. Explore art at auction and the NFT art marketplace, where you can find new thoughtfully curated auctions every two weeks.
