Knoll Dining Room Chairs

Mid-century modern design in America wouldn’t look the way it does without Knoll. The company’s acclaimed seatinglounge chairs, armchairs, office chairs and other furnishings created by a who’s who of designers and by Knoll’s pioneering cofounder, Florence Knoll (1917–2019) — helped define high-rise corporate culture and was rapidly adopted for use in living rooms, where it endures as a timeless favorite all over the world.

“Many of the designs that he had at that time were ones that I did not approve of,” Florence Knoll once recalled of her German-born husband, Hans Knoll (1914–55), the son of German modernist furniture manufacturer Walter Knoll.

A native of Michigan, Florence already had a world-class immersion in design when she met Hans. Orphaned at age 12, she was enrolled at Kingswood School, part of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, which became the go-to school for legends of mid-century design. Florence became very close with Cranbrook head Eliel Saarinen, his wife and their son, Eero. She later studied with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and worked for Marcel Breuer and Bauhaus school founder Walter Gropius. When Florence married Hans in 1946, he had been at work since 1938 on his own eponymous furniture line in New York City.

With Florence’s design acumen, the Knolls turned the company into a powerhouse of modernist design. The Knoll Planning Unit, created by Florence in the mid-1940s, designed office spaces for the likes of GM and CBS, helping to define the postwar corporate aesthetic.

The department’s small team designed furniture with practicality, efficiency and sleekness in mind, attributes that clearly define furnishings such as Eero Saarinen’s sculptural Executive chair, which was introduced in 1948 as the Model 72 and used for the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. (The armed version, which followed in 1950, was also specified for the campus, an architectural project of Saarinen’s.) This seating, as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients, soon became desirable for apartments and houses.

Knoll collaborated with an all-star cast of designers, including Saarinen, whose Womb chair arose from Florence’s request for “a chair that was like a basket full of pillows.” The catalogue includes some of the century’s most recognizable forms: Saarinen’s Tulip chairs, Harry Bertoia’s wire-lattice Diamond chair, the Cyclone table by artist Isamu Noguchi and pieces by Massimo and Lella Vignelli, Jens Risom, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who granted Knoll exclusive permission to produce his designs. The manufacturer continues to produce the only authorized version of the elegant and oft-copied Barcelona chair, which Mies created in collaboration with designer Lilly Reich, his creative and romantic partner.

By 1950 — when production for Knoll was moved to East Greenville, Pennsylvania — more than one third of the designs in the company’s portfolio were Florence’s own. She thought of her furniture as “meat and potatoes,” mere practicality.

“People ask me if I am a furniture designer,” she once said. “I am not. . . . I designed the fill-in pieces that no one else was doing.” But decades later, her own designs, like the Florence Knoll sofa, with its clean architectural lines, and her Bauhaus-inspired Lounge chair, are icons in their own right.

In 2021, Knoll was acquired by Herman Miller, another legendary American furniture manufacturer that turned a number of designers into mid-century household names. The combined company operates under the name MillerKnoll.

4 vintage Eero Saarininen Knoll Inc. Executive armchairs with an oak frame base
By Knoll, Eero Saarinen
Located in Highclere, Newbury
A classic set of 4 vintage Eero Saarininen Knoll Inc. executive armchairs in the original Knoll blue fabric with an oak frame base. The Eero Saarinen Executive armchair was featured in nearly every Florence Knoll Mid Century interior throughout the 1950s and beyond. Originally introduced in 1950, the chair transformed the notion of what executive seating could be with its fluid, sculptural form and modern finishing. The timeless and versatile design continues to fit seamlessly into work, conference, lounge and dining applications of any décor. The chair remains as one of the most popular Knoll designs ever with new versions of the armchair, as shown here, in fabric with the wooden light oak base retailing at around £2,000 per chair. And it’s the wooden legs that add to their appeal and was ultimately a big improvement on the original tubular steel frame. They are just warmer and more welcoming, as well as being more aesthetically pleasing. As such the chairs are more often used these days as dining chairs rather than in the office. The chairs are also supremely comfortable and are upholstered in a classic Knoll wool fabric that has different subtle colour flecks within the fabric and that also features a slightly darker colour in the seat. This is an intentional design aesthetic as it helps to maintain the condition and look of the seat with heavier use. They date from the 1990s and remain in very good vintage condition with only light signs of use. This item is sold as a set of 4 chairs but the chairs are also available as a complete dining set matched with a Florence Knoll Walnut table...

5 Knoll MCM Bentwood 1300 Series Dining Chairs Maroon & Black by Bill Stephens
By Bill Stephens, Knoll
Located in Topeka, KS
Wonderful vintage MCM or Mid-Century Modern bentwood 1300 Series dining armchairs with original maroon hopsacking upholstery and newly ebonized frames by Bill Stephens for Knoll set of 5. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Two chairs have been reglued and two chairs have a different weave in the fabric. Fabric has been shampooed and the wood frames have been restored with a black finish; but they still retain a few age-appropriate nicks and dings. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1961-1969. Move over Marvel… We have the real FANTASTIC FIVE!!! This is a GORGEOUS set of five 1300 Series bentwood chairs by famed designer Bill Stephens for Knoll!! The 1300 Series chairs were designed by Bill Stephens in 1967 and featured a bentwood frame supporting a molded plastic seat. This particular set of 5 frames is comprised of a fabulous bent plywood with a new black dyed finish. Three of the molded plastic seats are upholstered in a maroon hopsacking upholstery (we believe these to have been reupholstered) and two with a maroon fabric but with a different weave. They’re FABULOUS! They are circa 1961-1969 labeled with Knoll Associates, Inc., 320 Park Avenue tags. Use them at your dining table and enjoy a comfortable, long leisurely dinner with family and friends! Or, they would be wonderful at a game table, breakfast nook, around a conference table at the office, or as convenient and stylish extra seating in any room. Wherever you choose to use them, be ready for one of the most ergonomically comfortable chairs you have ever experienced. Bill Stephens born 1932 in Pennsylvania and graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He began his career with Knoll as an assistant prototype builder in 1960 for their Design and Development Group. After working up the ranks he became its director in 1971. He spear-headed and worked on the creation and development of many projects and products during his time as director including several where he was the principal designer. His greatest were his part in the Petitt chair which was not only beautiful but an achievement in technology and construction; his own 1300 Series or Stephens Chair which was originally designed for the student center at the Yale School of Architecture and remained in production at Knoll until 1988; and his contribution in the first wood landscape systems created along with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to be used in their Weyerhaeuser headquarters project. Stephens passed in 2007. Ergonomic comfort, superb style, and an iconic designer and manufacturer! This set of five Knoll Bill Stephens’ 1300 Series...

The history of the Knoll sofa began in 1954. The sofa was made during American designer and entrepreneur Florence Knoll’s direction of the Knoll Planning Unit, the company's pioneering "design consultant service" that would define the look of the postwar workplace. The versatile Florence Knoll sofa, with its angular silhouette and tasteful mix of textures, could as easily fit into the glass lobby of a skyscraper as the living room of a home. That same year, Florence Knoll also introduced a companion lounge chair that coordinated with the sofa. Knoll, Inc. continues to produce the Florence Knoll sofa over half a century after it was introduced, and vintage models are still prized for their sturdy construction and timeless qualities. What Florence Knoll called the Womb chair after it was created is unknown. However, its creator Eero Saarinen stated that Knoll inspired him to make the piece by asking him to design the most comfortable chair ever, saying specifically that she wanted something that felt like "a basket full of pillows." Presented with the challenge, Saarinen went primal. What, the designer figured, better signifies the very essence of comfort than the womb? "It was designed on the theory that a great number of people have never really felt comfortable and secure since they left the womb,” the designer said of his chair.
