About the Item

This exceptional oil on canvas by master Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein is an exceptional and unique example of his early pre-pop work. It is signed by the artist, upper right. After moving to Cleveland, OH in 1951 with his wife, Lichtenstein began exploring Native American themed subjects in his work. According to a 2005 "New York Times" interview, Lichtenstein is quoted as describing his 1950's works as "Taking the kind of stodgy pictures you see in history textbooks and redoing them in a modern-art way." The themes and styles seen in Lichtenstein's early works form the foundations of his groundbreaking comic-strip inspired works to come beginning in the 1960's. This work is included in the Roy Lichtenstein online catalogue raisonne, currently in process under the title, "Indian with Pipe," and the year c. 1953
