Big Hand Cast Bronze Bell Bold with a most pleasant resonating sound
Beautiful resonating ring tones await the new owner of this big one-of-a-kind vintage bronze bell from old Japan. Its beautiful natural patina makes it an attractive and desirable work of art. This distinctive dragon headed bell called ryuzu and remarkable protrusions called chi chi or nyu are crafted by generations old skilled Japanese specialists to improve sound resonance and are unique to Japan's ancient traditions.
This vintage hand cast bronze temple bell dates to the middle Showa period, mid-20th century.
A scarce survivor, this rugged bell was gently used.
Please note its impressive cast dragon headed top ryuzu, thick walls and original blue gray toned patina.
Dimensions: 18 inches tall and 10 inches diameter. It has been used and possesses an original aged patina appropriate to its age-just the way we like to find them.
Its beautiful resonating sound is guaranteed to please you.
The ringing resonation of this bell brings to the Japanese people - the voice of Buddha- is even more impressive because of its thick walls (see photo). Its sound and voice of Buddha was used to deliver wishes to the temples patrons and followers.

It takes an expert's eye to recognize the beauty and potential of root and burl treasures that are found in the wild. Skilled artisans then transform these natural wonders into functional and unique works of art China’s root carving tradition dates far back to the Warring States period, over 2000 years ago.
This desk or table called “Chaji” by Chinese can be associated as early as the late Ming Dynasty,17th century. By the 20th century, China’s entrepreneurial furniture makers began crafting more exotic tea and coffee tables and chairs from singular huge roots- some reaching ten feet in diameter. This superb example is among the best work of art to come out of a Fujian family workshop and the private collection of the president of the shop.. in many decades. It is carved from a huge, exotic golden camphor tree root and wood found on the border with Myanmar. Asian sculptors have worked in materials including wood, bronze and jade. Artists and artisans have used traditional techniques to depict deities, scenes from culture and more, and today, antique Asian sculptures and carvings are a popular choice for provocative and sophisticated home decor.
In China, the Qing dynasty, from the mid-17th century to the early 20th century, brought about significant changes in art while preserving traditional culture. Many emperors during this period were patrons of the arts, such as painting, calligraphy and decorative arts. This era saw the building of new Buddhist temples, which were decorated with statues. Some of these sculptures were adorned with colorful cloisonné decoration, in which tiny compartments, or cloisons, made by soldering copper filaments to a metal surface were filled with vibrantly hued enamel.
From the 17th to mid-19th century in Japan, kimonos were worn across classes and often fastened with a netsuke, a type of small carved toggle. Artists carved these from ivory, wood, shells and coral, creating animals, flowers and mythical creatures. During the Japanese Meiji period, spanning from 1868–1912, the country began trading internationally after centuries of isolation, allowing artists to sell their work overseas. Bronze sculpture flourished around this time for creating teapots, vases and incense burners.
Asian sculpture continued to evolve in the 20th century. During the Japanese Shōwa era, from 1926–89, art was influenced by international modernist movements like abstraction, Futurism and Surrealism. Contemporary Asian sculptures and carvings continue to combine global influences and a rich heritage of technique.
