A Rustic European 18th century French faience fountain with spigot
Located in Leesburg, VA
Anonymous Mid-18th century; probably Moustiers or Nevers, France Faience and brass Approximate size: 12.25 (h) x 9 (w) x 6.25 (d) inches The present dispenser was either used as a water or wine cooler or possibly for washing hands. The original lid is lost-to-time, yet its provincial beauty remains attractive and sublime. The present example—baked with white enamel and decorated with a lovely hand-painted polychrome lattice and floral theme—is warm, elegant and rustic. The curving linear form of the flowers subtly recall the influence of Japan’s Kakiemon style present in France during the Rococo period yet is still indebted to the earlier influence of Italy’s prolific maiolica workshops. This fountain would serve as an elegant addition for display on an oak or distressed wood console table...

Pair of French Louis XVI Period Gilt Bronze and Agate Vases
By Martin Baffert
Located in London, GB
These truly exceptional and rare antique Louis XVI period vases have been sculpted from agate, a precious and highly sought-after stone. The vases are set on square agate bases with gilt bronze laurel wreath socles. The burgundy and claret agate bodies of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze acanthus leaf ornamentation, and twin lion masks joined by draped swags above. The lids of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze, surmounted by pine cone finials. The vases' design is attributed to the late 18th century, French clockmaker Martin Baffert. Baffert worked with a number of Parisian bronziers including Jean-Nicholas Fremont, Nicolas-Guillaume Jourdan and Francois-Robert Leguel, who assisted in the creation of his designs. This pair of vases is very similar to another pair of vases which Baffert designed, which form part of a clock garniture currently in the Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor. The Rothschild vases...

27.5CM Antique Ming Wanli Chinese Porcelain Flower Kraak Dish Buddhist Cakras
Located in Amsterdam, Noord Holland
Large late Ming dynasty Wanli period blue and white kraak ware export porcelain deep charger. The centre medaillon is unusually painted with 5 cakras around a flaming scroll forming a five-patelled motif resembling a large flaming wheel. This Buddhist motif may have a central Asian origin. The underside is divided into panels. See Rinaldi, page 95 for a similar dish. CAKRAS . Literally meaning a circle, wheel, or discus, the Sanskrit term cakra plays a key role in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, particularly in their more esoteric Tantric forms. The term has several uses in various forms of yogic and Tantric practice. Thus cakra may refer to the circle of worship in which a particular ritual is conducted—for example, the highly esoteric cakra pūjā of Hindu Tantric rituals, usually performed in the dead of night in a cremation ground, involving practices that deliberately violate traditional laws of class distinctions and purity. Cakras may also refer to circular diagrams used in meditation and the worship of such specific deities as the famous Śri Cakras or Śri Yantra...

1750 Venezia Italy Lacquered Dark Blue Wooden Box with Golden Decoration
Located in Brescia, IT
This is a refined and exquisite lacquered wooden box, with polychrome and golden decoration on dark blue background. The dark blue color could seems a dark green. On the lid bright red and ivory volutes with lace inserts meticulously painted. Inside an exotic garden are depicting two Oriental human figures dressed in golden clothes. Band decorated with floral and volute motifs. It could be a magnificent jewelry case. One of the distinctive characteristics of Venetian Baroque and Rococo furniture and decorative objects is the skilful use of lacquers. Lacquer is a natural resin that was very rare in the past, imported from the East and used to create smooth and colored surfaces on furniture, ready to be finely decorated with refined floral designs or exotic animals. Venetian artisans became masters in lacquer processing which required time and patience because it was made with many steps. The Venetian style deeply influenced furniture design throughout Europe, but none reached the Venetian level in terms of beauty. The skillful use of lacquer and carvings defined Venice's unique style during the Rococo period, its Golden Age. Referring bibliography: A similar shaped and lacquered wooden box is presentin the Cà Rezzonico, in Venice and it is featured in S. Levy Lacche veneziane settecentesche II, Milano 1967, tav. 444. The piece is in excellent state of maintenance and it is guaranteed original in every parts. The surface was only cleaned not restored and it is original. The wooden dark blue lacquered box...

Mantel Clock 18th Century Louis XV Period by Kinable À Paris
Located in Warsaw, PL
"Late 18th Century - Kinable A Paris" Along a winding dirt path, the blind Belisarius carries his young guide. The boy has been bitten by a snake, which remains coiled around his bleeding leg. With his right arm wrapped limply around Belisarius's neck and his eyes closed, the youth balances precariously between life and death. Belisarius's eyes are also closed, but guided by his stick he moves forward with determination and purpose. He rises heroically against the spectacular sunset, a monumental figure creating a powerful outline against the sky. But the flaring sunset also signals a chill night and the uncertainty of the path ahead. Belisarius was a popular Byzantine general of the Roman Empire whose promising career was sabotaged by the jealous Emperor Justinian I. In 1767, a novel by Jean-François Marmontel revived interest in Belisarius. In Marmontel's novel, the emperor has the heroic general blinded, reducing Belisarius to begging. He is eventually rediscovered and aided by former officers and his family. This dramatic tale of patriotism, injustice, and redemption was widely embraced in revolutionary and post-revolutionary France and was a popular subject for artists--including Jacques-Louis David (François Gérard...

European Carved Limestone Celtic Votive Head of a Male Warrior
Located in London, GB
A Large European Carved Limestone Celtic Votive Head of a Male Warrior Wearing a Typical Flowing Moustache Small Beard and Curling Locks of Hair Stiffened with Lime Wash the Slit Mouth Open as if in Command Circa 1st Century BC - 1st Century AD Size: 31cm high, 22cm wide, 25cm deep - 12¼ ins high, 8¾ ins wide, 9¾ ins deep / 42cm high - 16½ ins high (with base) From about 500 BC, first Greek and later Roman historians mention peoples living in a large area of non-mediterranean Europe as Celts. These classical chroniclers seem to have recognised these communities as having sufficient shared cultural traditions to justify their being given a common name, ‘Keltoi’ by the Greeks, and ‘Celtae’ or ‘Galli’ by the Romans. The earliest allusions to Celts by such Greek historians as Herodotus (485 - 425 BC) were followed by Polybius (200 - 118 BC) and Livy (59 BC - AD 17) who discuss the expansion of the Celts from their central European homelands during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. They document the presence of Celts in Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Asia Minor, specifically central Turkey. They testify to the successful Roman resistance to the Celts in Italy, after the ignominy of the sacking of Rome by them in 387 BC, and describe the huge defeat suffered by the Celts at the battle of Telemon in northern Italy in 225 BC. The Celts in Greece who sacked the sacred site of Delphi in 279 BC were defeated by King Antigonos Gonatas of Macedon in 278 - 277 BC and in Turkey by Altalus of Pergamon in 240 BC. The Celts in Spain fell under the shadow of Rome from 2nd Century BC and the Celtic heartland known by the Romans as ‘Gaul’ was conquered by the Romans under Julius Caesar in the mid 1st Century BC. Britain was not referred to as Celtic by the ancient historians, but Caesar recognised the close similarities between Britain and Gaul especially in their political organisation. Tacitus (55 - 120 AD) and others chronicled the conquest of Britain between 43 and 84 AD some mentioning the fierce nature of the Celts who went into battle naked. Celtic art therefore belongs to an artistic tradition in the early history of Europe which is no less important than that of the classical world. Art was central to Celtic identity and was closely related to the objects which it decorated. The Celts were used to seeing art as an integral part of their everyday lives. Vietnamese Celadon Lotus Vessel, Ly or Tran Dynasty, 13th/14th Century, Vietnam

An unusually large Vietnamese celadon glazed stoneware bowl with carved lotus petal design, Ly or Tran Dynasty, 13th - 14th century, Vietnam. The large bowl or offering vessel of generous proportions, rising on a short, unglazed foot ring, revealing the reddish buff stoneware body. The globular body elegantly tapered. The lower section deeply carved with a traditional stylized lotus petal design, a band of incised lines above. The upper section of the vessel ribbed, and carved with long, elegant lotus petals that taper upwards, terminating in rounded ends. Another band of incised lines circumscribe the mouth.
