Modern Abstract Sculptures

MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

"Bouquet" Memory Jug by Michael Thompson
Located in Chicago, IL
Based in Chicago, IL, contemporary artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites, collages and mixed media works assembled from material fragments of past and present collected in his travels. In his ongoing series of memory jugs, Thompson adorns stoneware vessels with a kaleidoscope of ceramic shards, found objects, and pocket-sized trinkets he collected over the course of his life. Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest. Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. With varied sources for materials including Kyoto, Turkey, and Mexico, a great number of the found shards are 18th and 19th century ceramics...

Christofle Xiao Wang Silvered Bronze And Sterling Silver Abstract Lips Sculpture
Located in North Miami, FL
This stellar powerful and conversational silvered bronze and sterling silver limited edition abstracted love lips or heart sculpture was commissioned by Christofle and designed and executed by a young Chinese woman artist named Xiao Hui Wang. This is the first time in Christofle history that a young Chinese artist, albeit a woman was asked to create this commission. It is signed and numbered on the bottom. It is signed with the artists name not terribly legible, then Christofle then 08/66 then France. The base is very heavy and is sterling silver. The top is silvered bronze and was lacquered. The base cannot be lacquered because it is sterling silver so it will tarnish from time. You will be able to polish it. We have not seen another one on line or anywhere else. The original monumental sculpture was first created on the occasion of the Shanghai Expo and stands elegantly in monumental form at the flagship Hilton in Singapore. This is a great symbol of how the masters of silver which are Christofle have transcended the art of the table to the art of the living in sensuality. This is stellar sensual and sexy sculpture that will elicit conversation. It creates reflections of magnitude from the surface and each angle is a different representation. It is extremely heavy and came in its own crate from Paris. It is a piece de resistance of a great sculpture no doubt. This must be trucked because of its weight. This will need a great pedestal in your home or can sit on a large monumental cocktail...

Studio Made Golf Club Floor Lamp Pop Art Sculpture
Located in Chattanooga, TN
One-of-a-kind studio-crafted floor lamp built from repurposed golf clubs, this piece blends functional lighting with bold sculptural art. Actual golf clubs—identifiable by their brand and sizing—have been cut, shaped, and welded into a long neck and wedge-like base in the form of a classic golf club. At its foot nestles a large 5-inch diameter golf ball, cradled among the irons, integrating whimsy and meaning into the structure. The entire lamp is metal, and the weight and feel are substantial. The surface carries a clean white enamel finish that brings a contemporary Pop-Art sensibility to the form. The repaint is recent and mostly even; up close there may be minor mishaps or texture irregularities in the enamel, but nothing that detracts from its visual impact. The lamp is in working order; it emits a bright, directional light pleasing in both ambient and accent settings. Shade is not included, so the form remains clean and undistracted by extras. This lamp is perfect as a centerpiece in a living room, studio, or gallery-like space where it can be appreciated from multiple angles. The strong silhouette, melding sporting equipment with art and lighting, makes it a conversation starter. It pairs beautifully with minimalist decor, warm woods, polished metals, or dramatic accent walls. For collectors and design lovers who prize originality, sculptural lighting, or whimsical Pop-Art hybrids, this floor lamp is rare and memorable. It’s more than illumination—it’s functional art with personality and presence. Incredibly unique studio made golf club lamp...

The arched form is lucite and the square base is silver plate. The lucite has gradients of gray tones as light hits it. It is organic modern with elegant lines. Catherine Noll was mainly a Parisian jewelry designer who started her illustrious design career back then. The materials she worked with in jewelry consisted of wood, ivory, Perspex and crystal.
