Pair French 19th Century Japonisme Style Gilt-Bronze & Marble Chenets, Bouhon
By Bouhon Frères 1
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fine pair of French 19th century Japonisme Louis XV style Gilt-Bronze and Marble Figural Chenets (Andirons) by BOUHON FRES, each depicting a flaming dragon atop an "L" shaped base surmounted with an allegorical gilt-bronze and marble urns with floral garlands and paw-feet, the base with a draped ormolu design and raised on tapered feet. Stamped: "B&H". Circa: Paris, 1890-1900. The bronziers Bouhon et Cie. Bouhon Frers. specialized in bronze-decorated fire-places and fire-fittings. These large and fine chenets are supreme examples of their output. The firm participated in the 1878 and 1900 Paris Expositions Universelles. Japonisme[a] is a French term that refers to the popularity and influence of Japanese art and design among a number of Western European artists in the nineteenth century following the forced reopening of foreign trade with Japan in 1858. Japonisme was first described by French art critic and collector Philippe Burty in 1872.[3] While the effects of the trend were likely most pronounced in the visual arts, they extended to architecture, landscaping and gardening, and clothing.[4] Even the performing arts were affected; Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado is perhaps the best example. From the 1860s, ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock prints, became a source of inspiration for many Western artists. These prints were created for the commercial market in Japan. Although a percentage of prints were brought to the West through Dutch trade merchants, it was not until the 1860s that ukiyo-e prints gained popularity in Europe. Western artists were intrigued by the original use of color and composition. Ukiyo-e prints featured dramatic foreshortening and asymmetrical compositions. Japanese decorative arts, including ceramics, enamels, metalwork, and lacquerware, were as influential in the West as the graphic arts. During the Meiji era (1868–1912), Japanese pottery was exported around the world. From a long history of making weapons for samurai, Japanese metalworkers had achieved an expressive range of colours by combining and finishing metal alloys. Japanese cloissoné...

A fabulous example of this important sculpture in optimal condition. Throughout his life Barye endeavoured to capture the fundamental nature of the animal kingdom in all its diversity, wild or tame, exotic or familiar, cruel or gentle, bringing to life the roaring, trembling, living beasts. The son of a goldsmith, apprenticed to a steel engraver at a young age, Barye found himself making moulds for ornaments, acquiring knowledge that he would later build on to produce his exquisitely chased bronzes. When he was called up at seventeen, he joined the army’s topographic brigade where he used clay to model raised relief maps...

Pair of Bronze Models of a Standing Bull and a Running Cow, circa 1890
By Isidore Jules Bonheur, Francois Auguste Hippolyte Peyrol 1
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A pair of large and finely patinated bronze models of a standing bull and a running cow after models by Isidor-Jules Bonheur, Cast on a Naturalistic Base. French, circa 1890. Signed 'I BONHEUR' and stamped 'PEYROL EDITEUR'. Bonheur was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and his naturalistic depiction of farm animals, including cattle, was one of his most popular subjects. The bronze was cast by his brother-in-law, Hippolyte Peyrol, who ran one of the most successful art foundries in Paris at this time. Isidore-Jules Bonheur (1827-1901) was the son of the painter Raymond Bonheur and younger brother of Rosa Bonheur, the famous sculptor. He was born in Bordeaux and studied painting, at first with his father and then with the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, moving on to sculpture in 1848. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1848 with a painting and plaster study of the same subject ‘African horseman attacked by a lioness’. From then onwards, Bonheur exhibited regularly at the Salon as well as other exhibitions, winning medals in 1865 and 1869 together with the prized Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. He was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 1895. Most of Bonheur’s casts were by his uncle by marriage, Hippolyte Peyrol, whose tiny foundry mark is often very difficult to find. Bonheur’s studies range from farm animals, bears and tigers in a very naturalistic vein to equestrian groups. Although noted primarily for his small groups he did complete two large scale commissions, one to his sister Rosa, at Fontainbleau and the other, two stone lions at the steps of the Royal...

French, Antique Bronze Sculpture of Aberdeen Angus Bull by Isidore Bonheur
By Isidore Jules Bonheur
Located in Shippensburg, PA
ISIDORE JULES BONHEUR French, 1827-1901 Taureau Aberdeen-Angus" (Standing Aberdeen-Angus Bull) Patinated sand-cast bronze Signed to base "I. BONHEUR" Item # 211HDB17Z An exquisite and very rare casting of an Aberdeen-Angus bull, an unusual and distinctive breed of cattle from Scotland, this sculpture by Isidore Jules Bonheur is almost without a doubt cast by the foundry of his brother-in-law Hippolyte Peyrol and a rather early model as well in light of the distinctive construction method. In her text on the selection of 46 animal bronzes in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, Eleanor Luciano notes regarding this model that "Bonheur is never recorded to have been to Scotland, where he would have seen this unusual breed. Rosa Bonheur painted in Scotland, and its seems likely that Isidore would have drawn the idea for this bull either from one of her sketches or from an agricultural show in France. The animal's rich mane and strong modeling make this one of the most successful." Notable is the very fine surface patination which exhibits a glassy finish with a complex range of colors presenting in the body of the bull, overall being medium brown but augmented with an underlying reddish hue against auburn highlights. The base is signed "I. BONHEUR" in the typical manner. Museum Collections: * National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, acc. no. 2006.128.3 * Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia...

Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture “Cendrillon” or Cinderella by Emmanuel Villanis
By Emmanuel Villanis
Located in Shippensburg, PA
EMMANUEL VILLANIS [after] French, fl. 1880-1920 "Cendrillon" (Cinderella) Lost-wax patinated bronze signed in cast on left of socle "E. Villanis", titled to integral socle in raised relief "Cendrillon" cast circa 1930-50 Item # 212PVG15A A charming bust of a young maiden entitled Cendrillon (Cinderella), it is executed in the lost-wax method in a single piece with an integral socle that is titled in raised relief. The young woman is serious in her composure with a quiet strength, her eyes slightly downcast in the clothing of a common girl, her diaphonous garment sliding off one shoulder while the overall sculpture remains chaste and elusive. The surface is finished in a two-toned patina, the reddish-oxide surface being utilized for the flesh tones and a darker brown for the base and garments. Casting from the second quarter of the 20th century. ARTIST Born in Lille, France, little is known about the life of Emmanuel Villanis, despite the fact that he has a simply incredible level of output during the years of 1880-1920. First exhibiting at Salon in 1886, he went on to exhibit nearly five-hundred models, almost exclusively featuring the female form with strong influence of the Art Nouveau movement evident in every aspect of his work. He received honorable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, Paris. Artist Listings...

One Hour of the Night Bronze Sculpture by Joseph Michel Pollet
By Joseph Pollet
Located in NANTES, FR
"One hour of the night" Bronze sculpture with black brown patina depicting a stretching woman. It rests on an oval base imitating the rock. Signed on the terrace "Pollet". Signature of the founder "Gautier & Cie". Total height: 35.5 cm. 13.9in width: 25cm. 9.8in depth: 13cm 5.1in Weight: 3.5 Kg In very good condition, note a small patina wear on the elbow. Joseph-Michel-Ange Pollet born in Palermo on March 11, 1814 and died in Paris on January 1, 18711 is a French sculptor. Born in Palermo to French parents, Joseph-Michel-Ange Pollet studied sculpture in Italy with Bertel Thorwaldsen, Valerio Villareale and Pietro Tenerani. He came to Paris in 1836, then stayed in Ghent in 1838. After another stay in Italy from 1843 to 1845, he settled permanently in Paris and exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1846. He won a medal of third class in 1847, a second class medal in 1848 and a first class medal in 1851. In 1855 he was awarded a second class medal at the Universal Exhibition. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor by decree of June 14, 18563. Of neoclassical formation, the work of Pollet oscillates between this current and that of romanticism. In 1840, for the bicentenary of his death, he produced the bust of Rubens, the original plaster of which is kept at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. In 1848, he presented at the Salon a large plaster statue...
