The Loetz glassworks existed in Klostermuhle, Austria, for just over a hundred years, starting from 1840. But its heyday was during the life-time of Max Ritter Von Spaun, grandson of the original Johann Loetz who had founded the company. Von Spaun took over the company in 1879 and ran it until 1908, a year before his death. He was assisted by Eduard Prochaska, his technical specialist, and together they invented, designed and produced a whole series of wonderful new types of glass, taking out several patents and winning awards at all the major world exhibitions during the 1890's and the first years of the new century.
The Loetz company were amongst the leaders in Art Nouveau design and expecially in irridescent art glass. "Papillon" glass, like the vase on the left, is sometimes known today as "oil spot" glass. Another favourite Loetz colouring was irridized glass with pulled trails called "Phenomenon" glass. There were irridized vases with ribbons of metallic colours winding over the surface, and many spectacular designs with applied trails of beautiful colours, or simply pulled out of the body of the glass to form handles or decoration.
About 1900 the company started collaborating with outside designers, and some great artists designed pieces for Lotz, notably Joseph Hofmann, Koloman Moser, Maria Kirchner, and Hofstatter.
In 1908 Loetz was taken over by Max Von Spaun's son, also called Max, and although it struggled financially (going through bankruptcy in 1911 and again in 1931) there were several great designers whose work was produced by Loetz during those years and through the art deco period. A vintage Murano glass vase designed and produced by Alfredo Barbini in 1971. The vase is made of mouth-blown clear glass and has a quadruple opening. Signed on the base with engraved company signature 'A. Barbini' and company label. The vase is an authentic piece of 20th century Murano art glass and a rare work by Alfredo Barbini.
Alfredo Barbini (1912 – 2007) attended to the Abate Zanetti glass design school at the age of ten and worked at the S.A.I.A.R. Ferro Toso, Cristalleria di Murano and at the Zecchin-Martinuzzi furnace. In the early 1930s he became master craftsman at V.A.M.S.A. He executed works designed by the painter Luigi Scarpa Croce, such as the dish with fishes exhibited at the 1942 Biennale di Venezia. In 1946 he moved to Gino Cenedese & C as partner and director. At the 1948 Biennale, he exhibited an outstanding series of sculptures with the surface corroded with acid: “Collasso”, “Putto”, “Diana Nera”. In 1950 he started his own glass workshop the Vetreria Alfredo Barbini. Several works of Barbini are of outstanding importance for the muranese glass art as there are the Sasso, Scavo, Inciso, Sommerso or the Ad Agnelli objects.

The vase is decorated with controlled bubbles that are radiating upwards from its base; asymmetrical, free-flowing rim juxtaposes the regular bubble's pattern, guiding the eye along the lines of the piece.
The vase is signed by the artist in etching on the bottom; it is in good vintage condition with slight, age-appropriate signs of use on the bottom. This piece will work very well in any style of interior or would make a great gift for an art and design enthusiast.
Carl Erickson (1899-1966) worked at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, joining his father as an apprentice and spending the next 20 years developing a high level of craftsmanship, including precision use of controlled bubbles, a technique often associated with Pairpoint, that was widely used by Erickson in his own glass designs. In the early 1930s he was employed by Libbey Glass and from 1937 - by the Blenko Glass Company. After leaving Blenko, Carl founded his own art glass studio in Bremen, Ohio in 1943. Erickson glass was hand blown, so no two pieces could be identical. Erickson made reproductions for a number of museums, including the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., Old Sturbridge Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Ohio State Historical Society Museum.
