About the Item

Vintage majolica ceramic vase features streamlined cylinder shape and festive "Prezzemolo", or Parsley, decor in blue colorway. The decor consists of abstract geomentic shapes in blue and green glaze, outlined in sgraffito technique, interspersed among free-flowing bands of sgraffito dots on the iconic Rimini Blue background. The minimal shape of the vase is juxtaposed with the colorful, textural glaze, adding visual interest and tactile depth to the piece. The vase is marked on the bottom with ITALY; it is missing the distributor label, but it was probably created for either Raymor or Rosenthal Netter. Due to the convenient size, the vase can also be used as planter or cachepot. Sculptural, highly decorative vase with graphic form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Transitional, Grand Millennial, Maximalist, Collected, or Contemporary.

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...

About Bitossi (Manufacturer) Like a Fellini movie, the ceramics of this famed Italian company embody a creative spectrum that ranges from the playful and earthy to the high-minded and provocative. Based in Florence, Bitossi Ceramiche draws on craft traditions that date back to the 1500s. These find expression in the artisanal vases and animal figures by the firm’s longtime art director Aldo Londi, as well as the colorful, totemic vessels designed by the high priest of postmodernism, Ettore Sottsass. The company was incorporated by Guido Bitossi in 1921, though the family began making art pottery in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s, Londi came aboard, bringing with him a mindset that respected time-honored craft, yet looked also to the future. On the one hand, Londi’s perspective fostered the making of Bitossi’s popular whimsical animal figures, hand-shaped and -carved and finished in a rich azure glaze known as “Rimini Blue.” But with his other hand, Londi reached out to thoughtful, experimental designers such as Sottsass. Starting in the 1950s, some 20 years before he founded the Memphis Postmodern design...
