Mid-Century Modern Vases

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

Vintage Green Cased Alga Glass Vase with Gold Leaf by Tomaso Buzzi for Venini
Located in Bresso, Lombardy
Made in Italy, Murano, 1930s. Between 1932 and 1933 the Milanese architect Tomaso Buzzi, a spirited protagonist of the Milan “neoclassicist” movement, a friend and associate of Gio Ponti, and a partner of Il Labirinto, established a fruitful collaboration with the Venini glassware company, which would continue, albeit episodically, in later years. The architect’s creative contribution was evident both in the glass forms and in their innovative manufacturing technique. When Buzzi arrived at the Venini company in Murano, in 1932, he brought with him a remarkable cultural baggage and a thorough knowledge of ancient art, particularly the Etruscan period...

Vetro Calcedonio Vase by Napoleone Martinuzzi for Venini Murano, ca. 1930s
Located in Berghuelen, DE
Vetro calcedonio vase by Napoleone Martinuzzi for Venini Murano ca. 1930s. A very rare Murano art glass vase attributed to Napoleone Martinuzzi around 1930. Manufactured by Cappelin in the 1920s or Venini in the 1930s. Thin hand blown malachid (calcedonio) glass with curved handles on each side. Similar to Venini model number 3255. This model was produced in different glass types. The vase is not signed. It was bought from a very famous collection in the 1990s. Reach out for more information on the provenance. Measures: Height: 9.06" (23 cm) Diameter: 6.3" (16 cm) Napoleone Martinuzzi (1892 -1977) was an Italian sculptor and designer who left his mark on Italian glass art in particular. As graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, he worked with Ca' Pesaro artists and exhibited at Ca' Pesaro in 1908. In the 1920s he was appointed as Director of the Murano glass Museum. In 1925 he founded Venini & Co. with Paolo Venini and others, of which he took over the artistic direction. For Venini he created stunning creations in soffiato, opaque and pulegoso glass that received international recognition with many awards. His creations of animals, fruits and succulent plants gained international success too. The Cenedese Glassworks , Seguso Vetro d'Arte and Pauly & Co were his last creative stations. Vintage Venini Murano Fulvio Bianconi Double Incalmo Blown Glass Vase
Located in Brussels, BE
Among the many designs and different techniques he experimented within his collaboration with Venini, Fulvio Bianconi used the "A incalmo" technique which requires great mastery from the glassblowers. This is an "a doppio incalmo" vase which simply means a double incalmo. Cylindrical vase, composed of three distinct colors. The base in black glass, the middle part in red glass and the upper part in blue glass. The vases were obtained by merging several "rings" of molten glass. Designed in 1951, the vase is in very good condition. It was produced in the 1950s and bears the acid seal "venini murano italia". The vase is published in many books, and is sometimes misattributed to Thomas Stearns who will be inspired by these forms and these particular techniques developed by Fulvio Bianconi, Paolo Venini and also Ricardo Licata...
