Coalport Pair of Floral Gilded Sauce Tureens, Marquess of Anglesey, circa 1820
Located in London, GB
This is an extremely rare set of lidded sauce tureens made by Coalport in circa 1820. The tureens are decorated in the "Marquess of Anglesey" pattern. These sauce tureens would have formed part of a large dessert service. They were used for the sauce to be served on ice cream or a cooked sweet dish, and the lids have holes for the sauce ladles. Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th century, coming out with many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th century and brought out many iconic designs. The Welsh Nantgarw factory first created the heavily gilded service for the Marquess of Anglesey, with beautifully painted flowers. Later the Swansea factory made additions to or copies of this service, and circa 1820 Coalport...

A beautiful and large late 19th century Berlin K.P.M. Porcelain oval plaque signed Wagner Signed Wagner The portrait of a lovely woman entitled ‘Agesta’, after the artist Angelo Asti. Impressed K.P.M and scepter marks, in the original frame. KPM is an acronym for Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, which translates to “Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin.” The company was founded in 1763 by Frederick II of Prussia, who bought the factory from its previous owner, Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky, in the wake of its bankruptcy. Frederick II greatly admired the factory’s “white gold,” a type of porcelain so fine and translucent that it closely mirrored the high-quality porcelain made in China. He invested large sums of money into the company and granted it the use of the royal scepter...

19th Century Jacob Petit Charles X Vase 1820
By Jacob Petite
Located in Roma, RM
France vase, signed under the rectangular base J.P. Jacob Petit: Paris,Belleville( France). Jacob Petit produced porcelain here from circa 1790. The products have been highly praised and show an individual style. But porcelain was also made in the style of Meissen; these pieces were marked with Elector's swords. Patents dealing with improvements to the formula of the porcelain paste and surface techniques were given notice of in England in 1853. In 1834 the factory incorporated the Fontainebleau porcelain factory. This vase was made (as can be seen from the signature) before its incorporation with Fontainebleau in 1834. This type of vase will be repeated over the years with different colors and finishes. In front we see classical figures, the reverse with birds and flower panels...

Antique and Vintage Porcelain Dinner Plates, Platters and Serveware for Sale

Today you’re likely to bring out your antique and vintage porcelain in order to dress up your dining table for a special meal.

Porcelain, a durable and nonporous kind of pottery made from clay and stone, was first made in China and spread across the world owing to the trade routes to the Far East established by Dutch and Portuguese merchants. Given its origin, English speakers called porcelain “fine china,” an expression you still might hear today. "Fine" indeed — for over a thousand years, it has been a highly sought-after material.

Meissen Porcelain, one of the first factories to create real porcelain outside Asia, popularized figurine centerpieces during the 18th century in Germany, while works by Capodimonte, a porcelain factory in Italy, are synonymous with flowers and notoriously hard to come by. Modern porcelain houses such as Maison Fragile of Limoges, France — long a hub of private porcelain manufacturing — keep the city’s long tradition alive while collaborating with venturesome contemporary artists such as illustrator Jean-Michel Tixier.

Porcelain is not totally clumsy-guest-proof, but it is surprisingly durable and easy to clean. Its low permeability and hardness have rendered porcelain wares a staple in kitchens and dining rooms as well as a common material for bathroom sinks and dental veneers. While it is tempting to store your porcelain behind closed glass cabinet doors and reserve it only for display, your porcelain dinner plates and serving platters can safely weather the “dangers” of the dining room and be used during meals.

Add different textures and colors to your table with dinner plates and pitchers of ceramic and silver or a porcelain lidded tureen, a serving dish with side handles that is often used for soups. Although porcelain and ceramic are both made in a kiln, porcelain is made with more refined clay and is stronger than ceramic because it is denser.

On 1stDibs, browse an expansive collection of antique and vintage porcelain made in a variety of styles, including Regency, Scandinavian modern and other examples produced during the mid-century era, plus Rococo, which found its inspiration in nature and saw potters crafting animal figurines and integrating organic motifs such as floral patterns in their work.
