Mid-Century Modern Beds and Bed Frames

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

'Taliesin' Mahogany Twin Sized Bed Headboard by Frank Lloyd Wright, 1955, Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This gorgeously refinished Honduran Mahogany 'Taliesin' Collection headboard for a twin sized bed was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Heritage-Henredon in 1955 and produced only for two years, therefore is now a highly sought-after and rare collectors item. This example is signed with a Heritage Henredon stamp on the lower front bar. Frank Lloyd Wright stated that one of his goals for this line was for the 'design to make the home more efficient as well as more beautiful'. Woven into each piece of this series was the chamfered wood edge with an abstracted Greek key motif, the signature detail of every Taliesin design, covering the edges of each item in the collection. All of the pieces were executed in Honduran Mahogany, a high-end luxury wood choice. His idea was to design ‘infinite adaptability to American living’, for example desks could double as dressing tables, small tables could be used as a chair or stool and bookcases had moveable tops transforming into room dividers. Decoration was limited to the greek key edges so that ‘is of the piece, not on it’ and the removal of elimination of any hardware door or drawer pulls in favor of cut out flush pulls...

Deeble Classic Modern Storage Bed & Attached Nightstand Set, Midcentury Walnut
Located in Long Beach, CA
This piece is designed and hand-crafted by yours truly in Long Beach. The bed pictured is built from walnut, but I can use other woods upon request. The design is my own, inspired by the Scandinavian furniture of the 50's (Danish/Mid Century Modern). All joinery is mortise and tenon, which means it's strong and built to last forever. The price listed here is for a queen bed (frame alone is 65" by 85"). We can make this a king or full as well. The bottom of the bed is 8 1/2 inches off the ground, and the top of the headboard is about 39 inches off the ground, and there's about 13 inches from the top of the slats to the bottom of the headboard* (see note below). The mattress rests on slats, and I can put a thin sheet of plywood over the slats to give a uniform, platform-like surface upon request (some folks prefer just the slats- depends on your mattress). It has four drawers underneath, two that slide out on each side (in the picture there are only two long drawers that slide out to either side of the bed, I have since switched to four drawers). Each drawer is approximately 6 inches tall, 29 inches wide, and 27 inches deep** My design approach on the drawers is to keep them recessed behind the edge of the bed, and to have them floating off the ground, so that visually the bed does not feel bulky like most storage beds...

Noura Bed, Queen Bed, Bamboo Platform Bed in Wheat
Located in San Jose, CA
Sun at six is a contemporary furniture design studio working with traditional Chinese joinery masters to handcraft our pieces using traditional joinery. Great furniture begins with quality materials: raw, sustainably sourced wood, our house-made finishes developed with years of testing, and full-grain, vegetable-tanned leathers that patina with age. We work to bring out the natural character already present in our materials. People matter to us. We source leather from with a family-owned tannery in Italy, and work with traditional Chinese joinery masters, who hand build each piece of furniture using fading, ancient joinery techniques. We finish with our own tenna oil, a natural oil we press and make from tree oils and nuts ourselves. We work hard to find quality, sustainably sourced hardwoods, which are air-dried, hand-sealed, and carefully kiln-dried according to our own recipes. In line with our commitment to sustainability, we’ve developed the Noura bed using...
