New Life for the Noble Tree: Masterworks by George Nakashima 'Sotheby's'
Located in New York, NY
Catalog of a sale held at Sotheby’s, New York, on December 15, 2006, showcasing the Arthur and Evelyn Krosnick collection of George Nakashima furniture and lighting, or actually the second collection, as the first—112 pieces-- was completely destroyed by fire in 1989. George Nakashima essentially stopped what he was doing and focused on rebuilding the collection replacing the lost items with what he deemed better examples, owing to his own technical and artistic maturation, though many were completed under the guidance of his daughter, Mira, after George passed away in 1990. Highlights include an important “Arlyn” table, lot 313, that fetched $822,000 (a record for the artist) on a pre-sale estimate of $300,000-$500,000; a superb “Minguren II” table that brought $180,000; a magnificent “Arlyn II” coffee table that sold for $204,000; and a set of eight Conoid chairs that sold for $96,000. The catalog of the Krosnick sale remains a touchstone for collectors interested in the work of George Nakashima. 103 pages with 85 lots, mostly with full color illustrations, printed wrappers. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Signed Limited Edition Book with Capitello Bookstand
Located in Los Angeles, CA
He’s a four-time Mr. Universe, seven-time Mr. Olympia. His films have grossed four billion dollars worldwide. He won the California governor’s race by a landslide. He has one of the most recognizable faces in the world, an oft-imitated accent, and a physique still heralded as the most perfect ever built. He’s Arnold, the one and only, with first name recognition worldwide, and now with a two-volume edition equal to his impressive size and unabashed ego. A decade of collaboration in the making, this photo tribute covers 75 years of Schwarzenegger, from the future Terminator’s impoverished childhood in Thal, Austria, to his rise as a young athlete, his journey to America to become the most celebrated bodybuilder of all time, to his career as the world’s leading action film star, then into the California governor’s mansion and beyond. Along the journey, Arnold’s muscular body, chiseled features, and charismatic personality made him a favorite subject of photographers, including Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, and Andy Warhol. The big book includes them all, while the smaller companion volume gives you more intimate bodybuilding images, behind-the-scenes film stills, dozens of photos from Arnold’s personal archive, and exclusive interviews with Arnold and those who know him best, including directors Ivan Reitman and Bob Rafelson, and bodybuilding legends Franco Columbu, Dave Draper, and Frank Zane. Casa Santa Fe: Design, Style, Arts, and Tradition
Located in New York, NY
Casa Santa Fe: Design, Style, Arts, and Tradition Photographs by Melba Levick, Text by Rubén G. Mendoza Presented here are houses to dream of and dream in—a luminous celebration of the finest examples of the Santa Fe Style from the eighteenth century to today, in this high-desert mecca of artists, craftspeople, artisans, and designers. Desert hues, natural materials, thick hand-plastered walls, and adobe brick construction are hallmarks of the Santa Fe Style, which is as much an expression in architecture, interior design, art, and crafts as it is a way of life. Rooted in a sense of earthy comfort inspired by its history, the surrounding desert, and Native American and Hispanic design influences, the style has a timeless appeal and vibrant ongoing life that has resulted in these extraordinary homes. With features such as eighteenth-century peeled vigas, tin chandeliers, romantic iron sconces, and hand-hewn wood-beamed ceilings, each house is a rich yet harmonious invitation that will engage the senses and speak to the soul. Beyond the houses, the writer and photographer spotlight those details and spaces that together convey the magic of this very special place, including patios and gardens; fireplaces, kivas, and hornos; ceramics; Native American arts; cabinets and trasteros; folk art; and weaving. Casa Santa Fe is the definitive sourcebook for architects, designers, builders, homeowners, and interior decorators seeking to expand their visual repertoire of historically defined and classically inspired architectural details and interior appointments. About The Author Melba Levick is a Los Angeles–based photographer with more than sixty books to her name, including The Spanish Style House...

Yves Thomas, Waves and Storms, French Artist-Painter Book, by Yves Thomas, 2011
Located in Atlanta, GA
Yves Thomas, Vagues et Tempetes (Waves and Storms), French-English book by Yves Thomas, 2011. Yves Thomas is a recognized listed French artist born in Normandy, France, in 1937. The most beautiful works of Yves Thomas have something musical, sonata, and symphony mingle in the light of the painting. The black rocks declined in purple-gray, are like the shadows of a mysterious world whose surprising beauty we can observe. In these "visionary" paintings, everything evokes the passage of time, from the wear and tear of stones to stranded ships. And yet, the light of the artwork escapes this erosion so much it is alive and plays with its timelessness. Islands, reefs, and rocks do not belong to any identifiable country. Only light gives life and meaning to these landscapes taken from the soul. This light merges with time which gives birth to these spaces. This time-light stands at the heart of emotion itself. This spiritual time haunts us with its intrinsic presence and escapes the intellect to exist better. It offers the spectator the possibility of becoming clairvoyant in turn. The art of Yves Thomas is an invitation to an inner journey but also the authentic testimony of an artist working beyond fashions and having been able to remain faithful to his dreams. He allowed the light of his paintings to flourish. Through the miracle of creation, Yves Thomas bears witness to the light of our dreams. (credit: Artthomparis) About the Artist: At the age of 14, Yves Thomas copied a large painting by Antoine Jean Gros, named "The plague-stricken of Jaffa," in the Louvre Museum Yves Thomas readily admits that "the result was not completely satisfactory" but, coming out of adolescence, he mastered drawing. At 17, Yves Thomas joined the French Navy for five years. One can imagine the artist scrutinizing the ocean waves and attempting to capture their moving forms in his sketchbooks. During this period, he discovered and practiced "The Camera Lucida" technique assiduously. An increasingly rigorous design naturally leads to his "Ingres" period. Open to different trends and curious by nature, Yves Thomas began, a few years after, abstract paintings and then returned to a hyperrealistic drawing...

Marvel Comics Library, X-Men, Vol. 1, 1963–1966, Famous First Edition Book
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The Strangest Super-Heroes of All. The foundation of a pop-culture phenomenon. When Marvel publisher Martin Goodman asked Stan Lee to deliver another new team book for his line of comics, he had no idea he’d be getting something like The X-Men. In fact, nobody could have imagined the extraordinary phenomenon the X-Men would eventually grow into—not Goodman, not Lee, not even the forward-thinking futurist Jack Kirby. What they started out as was a charming, ragtag team of misfits, devised by Lee and Kirby to be mutants—youngsters born with “X-tra” powers thrust upon them not by accidentally crossing paths with cosmic rays or a nuclear blast, but by the fate of birth—led by a no-nonsense professor who trained them to become heroes that could protect the world from menaces, mutant and otherwise. The first years of storytelling laid the foundation for much of what has put the X-Men at the crossroads of comics and popular culture: Hounded by a public that fears and misunderstands them, mutantkind find themselves at the heart of their own civil rights struggle; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety amongst themselves despite the challenges that set them apart from others in society; and Professor Xavier lined up against his ideological foe, Magneto, who had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to take the fight for their self-preservation directly to humankind. Along the way, Lee and Kirby—who were on fire taking comics into the Marvel Age—introduced a menagerie of villains and supporting characters that would become mainstays of Marvel and its lore: the super-powered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the formidable Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; the jungle dweller from the Savage Land, Ka-Zar; the demigod from the stars, the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask and his army of mutant-hunting Sentinels. And as Lee and Kirby gave way to new talents so they could move on to new corners of the Marvel Universe, Atlas era art veteran Werner Roth teamed with writing newcomer and future X-Men legend Roy Thomas...

The truth is, it is difficult not to fall under the influence of the French, whose uncommon grace is inherent in everything they do. Explore the captivating allure of French influences with the First Edition of "French Influences," a hardcover edition by Betty Lou Phillips and Emily Minton as the photographer. Published in 2001, this book takes you on a visual journey through the timeless elegance and artistic inspirations of French design. Following on the heels of Provencal Interiors: French Country Style in America and French by Design, in French Influences, Betty Lou Phillips delves into the world of design Francais once again, illustrating through lavish color photography how, room by room, French elegance remains the creme de la creme. From living rooms to kitchens, bedrooms, dining rooms, media rooms, gardens, and baths, French Influences reveals the means for creating French-style rooms in the home. Furniture, linens, floor coverings, window treatments, accessories, color palettes, lighting fixtures, and antiques inspired by their rich cultural heritage, including rock-crystal chandeliers, Aubusson rugs, exquisite tapestries, feather-filled armchairs, and painstakingly carved armoires are all part of this style. The resource guide makes it possible for anyone to locate these objets d'art and decorate a la Francaise, creating a gracious mingling of old-world charm and ease. Author of Provencal Interiors: French Country Style in America and French by Design, Betty Lou Phillips is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Her design work has appeared in such publications as Southern Accents, Bedroom, Bath & Wall, and Decorating, and has also graced many magazine covers. The enduring appeal of French-country style spans the centuries, a gracious mingling of elegance and ease. After years of largely echoing the furniture, fabrics, and accessories linked with the region of Provence, these days French country is often far removed from the primitive images that hearken back to the early seventeenth century. Room by room, the book reveals the secrets to creating a contemporary French-country look, including textiles, furniture, floor coverings, window treatments, color palettes, wall treatments and lighting, thus allowing anyone to bring the look home. Award-winning designer and best-selling author, Betty Lou Phillips is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers. With projects from New York to California, her work has been featured in countless magazines, as well as in her numerous home design books...

Antique and Vintage Books

Antique and vintage books add a sense of culture and style to any room. Displaying these types of books in your living room or reading nook can warm a space with a distinguished feel.

Several factors make antique books highly desirable. Original jackets, ornate binding, illustrations and quality of the print all contribute to making a vintage book special. Rare books are of great interest to collectors in the know and can command high prices at auction. In 2021, an important early artist book by Andy Warhol sold at auction for more than $106,000. Somewhere between all the commercial work he did as an ambitious young graphic designer in the early 1950s and his first real debut as a Pop artist a decade later, Warhol produced a trove of incredibly charming drawings. His illustrated self-published artist books from the 1950s are very rare.

Many collectors seek the first edition of certain books. Fewer copies of a book and higher demand make it a rare find. A book that contains the author’s signature also makes it much more prized than other examples of the same title.

Collectors and designers decorate rooms with vintage books for a cozy feeling in a home. Coffee-table books, such as those featuring photography and design, serve as conversation pieces or offer a relaxing moment when leafed through.

Interior designers look for vintage books when they want to add color or detail. For instance, leather-bound books can create a scholarly air while mid-century titles offer a modern edge. Vintage international books or first editions can provide a sense of history.

No matter the genre, there is a book for you. You can find rare, one-of-a-kind antique books on 1stDibs. Browse by authors, like celebrated architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright and Edgar Rice Burroughs, as well as by period, including mid-century modern, Art Deco and Victorian.
