Mid-Century Modern Daybeds

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

Ettore Sottsass Daybed, Red Lacquered Wood, Chartreuse Upholstery, Italy c. 1962
Located in New York, NY
Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) A lively and playful modernist daybed or sofa by Memphis Milano founder Ettore Sottsass, in red lacquered walnut with a black-upholstered cushion and two bolster pillows in chartreuse. An early work by the revolutionary designer and eventual gray eminence of postmodernism, the piece marks an important transitional period as Sottsass moved away from strict functionalism to incorporate ideas from contemporary art, art history, and religion. The sofa eschews the man-made materials of his later Memphis Group works, but anticipates them in its vivid palette. “Every color has a history,” Sottsass said. “Red is the color of the Communist flag, the color that makes a surgeon move faster, and the color of passion.” Indeed, the sensuality of the sofa's hues whimsically counterbalances its minimalist forms. The staggered repetition of the frame's vertical slats, alternating between wide and narrow, forecast the stripes of Sottsass's Nefertiti desk...

Johannes Spalt Black Leather ‘Constanze’ Sofas or Daybeds
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, 'Constanze' daybed or sofa, black leather, steel, Austria, 1960s This Austrian daybed named ‘Constanze’ is typical for Mid-Century Modern design from Austria. The tufted leather seat and back is constructed with a slick and clean metal frame. The elegant slim outwards tapered legs create an open feeling and give the sofa the needed air to come across less solid and robust. By only one hand movement, the piece turns from a comfortable sofa to a daybed. Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...

Mid-Century Modern Chaise or Day Bed in Coral Vinyl Faux Leather Aluminum Legs
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome Mid-Century Modern coral vinyl faux leather and aluminum leg chaise lounge or day bed. It is in good vintage condition. The beautiful original coral colored vinyl has many nicks, holes, dings, and tears. But we have repaired a few and if you do not need perfection you could get by using this great colored upholstery. One large repair is in the middle of the head pad. Please see photos. However, we know most will want to reupholster, so it is priced accordingly. Circa mid-20th century. I am looking into the future and I can just imagine you lounging upon this lovely chaise while sipping a cocktail from your mid-century modern bar cart! Or maybe that’s me? No. I think it is you. Well I assume that means you are going to make this fabulous piece yours. It is comprised of four-square tubular brushed aluminum legs which hold it to padded chaise lounge body. It is currently wearing its original gorgeous coral colored vinyl faux leather with nail head detail. Unfortunately, this covering has seen lots of use and you will most likely want to recover. However, we have repaired a few of the boo boos and if you can live with them for a bit you could enjoy this luscious color for a while. It will be fabulous in your mid-century modern home or industrial loft no matter where it is used. We did not find any tags or maker’s name and do not know exactly how this piece started its life. But we can visualize it learning lots of secrets in a psychiatrist office or offering a seat to young starlets in the director’s office. Whatever secrets it holds we know you are smitten as we are. Make it yours! Chair size: • Height at head 26 inches • Height at foot 21 inches • O/A length 73 inches • Length of seating area 42...
