Kaare Klint Sofa Model 5011 in Original Cognac Leather Rud Rasmussen, Denmark
Located in WIJCKEL, NL
Two-seater sofa model 5011 in original cognac leather and six-legged mahogany base. Produced by Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers, Denmark. Minor marks on the frame, patina to the leather. Back covered in original canvas. Shown at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition in 1935. Signed with decal manufacturer’s label to underside: (Rud. Rasmussens Snedkerier). Kaare Klint is widely recognized as the father of Danish modern design. It is hard to overstate his influence. He developed an entirely new analytical approach to furniture design that his students at the Danish Academy of Art would emulate for years to come, yet was also inspired by historic designs from various cultures, modernizing and re-interpreting classic pieces for new generations. Literature: Gorm Harkær, Klintiana: “Kaare Klint”, vol.2, pg 94. Kaare Klint (1888-1954) is regarded as the founding father of Danish Modernim. As an architect, furniture designer and leading professor at the Department of Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Klint established the principles of modern Danish furniture by combining a profound appreciation of traditional construction techniques with a modernist emphasis on function and a rejection of ornaments. Klint’s design was always based on relentless research; he never compromised. Every piece had to fulfill its purpose, be completely clear in its construction with dimensions and proportions corresponding to the human body and display materials and craftsmanship of the highest quality. Logic, often using a mathematical system of measures, and a constructive way of thinking were the foundation of Klint’s philosophy of furniture design. Like many of his contemporaries, counting Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, he advocated standardization and functional requirements and dismissed the use of all ornamentation. But Klint realized his vision in wood and leather, using traditional craftsmen and working methods and often finding inspiration in historical models. In this way, he charted the course for an alternative Nordic Functionalism that idealized the workshop and the collaboration between furniture architects and cabinetmakers as opposed to the factory. Kaare Klint’s first major work was a collaboration with his mentor, the architect Carl Petersen. In 1914 they were commissioned to design furniture and fixtures for Faaborg Art Museum. One of the highlights to emerge from this commission was the Faaborg chair, a light and elegant chair with clear references to classical furniture. The construction and proportions of an 18th century English Chippendale chair...

Leif Hansen "Model 62" Sofa for Kronen Møbelfabrikken, Denmark, 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Leif Hansen’s Model 62 sofa is commonly referred to as the “Geisha” and was designed in 1959. This model is a strikingly elegant example of Danish modernism’s streamlined, luxurious aesthetic appeal to contemporary eyes. This three-seater sofa is made of two types of exotic woods and dressed in a premium light fabric. Its character is created by three main elements: the visually sectioned, fully upholstered body, the wooden accents on the arms, and the distinctively shaped legs. It says a lot when a model is representative not only of a designer, but also of a manufactory. So is the case with this Geisha sofa...

Scandinavian Modern Teak & Off White Leather Small Sofa Attributed to Ekornes
Located in Topeka, KS
Marvelous vintage Scandinavian Modern small leather sofa Attributed to Ekornes comprised of a teak frame and off-white leather removeable seat, back, and arm zippered cushions. This piece has been attributed based upon archived research including online sources, vintage documentation and catalogs, designer literature, and other materials however, it is not signed or marked in any way. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, we have re-dyed the leather in its original color. There are some signs of wear on right hand cushions. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, late 20th to early 21st Century. This sofa is SCREAMING with Scandinavian Modern Magnificence!!! We have a FABULOUS vintage Scandinavian Modern style small leather sofa Attributed to Ekornes for your viewing and purchasing pleasure. It’s not quite as small as a loveseat but it’s not as large as a traditional sofa. It does have three seat cushions, they’re just a little more “snug,” which is actually quite nice…so we’re calling it a small or petite sofa. It is comprised of a phenomenal teak frame bearing a beautiful front apron and flared arms. It holds three seat, three back, and two arm cushions, all removeable, zippered, and wearing a lovely off white leather. And there are hidden Velcro strips on the sofa deck and on the underside of the arms for added stability to hold the cushions tightly in place. And the bottom dust cover has two zippers so you can access the springs for convenient cleaning, etc. NICE!! The back of the sofa features a leather padded cushion between the teak back legs featuring vertical stitched details and the sofa sides are solid leather panels surrounded by teak frames. The arms swoop down and the leather arm cushion wraps around the top and side of the arms and connects to the hidden Velcro strap on the underside. Can we just say… GORGEOUS!!! It is the epitome of Scandinavian Modern beauty!!! It is going to be wonderful in your living room facing your coffee table, in a family or sitting room surrounded by Danish décor and other furnishings, or in the den or study flanking the fireplace. It bears superior comfort, exquisite style, and a quintessential Scandinavian Modern style you are sure to love for years to come! Most people know that Ekornes is a Norwegian company. What you may not know is Ekornes began in the mattress industry. The journey starts in 1934 with founder J.E. Ekornes. At that time, Ekornes was manufacturing springs for furniture companies in the area, and soon after, all throughout Norway. In 1947, Ekornes made a huge leap into the production of wooden furniture frames and parts for day beds and sofa beds. And soon after, they began production of their own mattresses. Their foamed plastics changed the mattress industry. By the time 1966 came around, Ekornes was releasing its newest and first collection of lounge furniture. This made Ekornes the first furniture manufacturer in Norway! Ekornes quickly became a household name in their country and in 1971 the Stressless Recliner was introduced. At the time, no one at Ekornes knew that the introduction of this early model Stressless chair would soon become the bulk of their business. Just 5 years after, The Stressless Brand alone hit the 100 million Norwegian Krone mark! In 1994, Ekornes celebrated its 60th anniversary and by 1996 the Stressless Chair had been on the market for 25 years. In March of 2001, Ekornes opened its famous showroom "Ekornes Bua" in Alesund, Norway and between 2002 and 2007, showrooms were opening up all over the world: Sao Paulo, Paris, Las Vegas, Berlin, and several more cities in Europe, Asia, and The United States. They are still in production today. Can you really go wrong with teak and leather? We think NOT!!! Comfort, convenience, quality, and a classic style created to withstand the hands of time!! We LOVE this teak & off white leather sofa...

Shop Unique Sofas on 1stDibs

Black leather, silk velvet cushions, breathable bouclé fabric — when shopping for antique, new or vintage sofas, today’s couch connoisseurs have much to choose from in terms of style and shape. But it wasn’t always thus.

The sofa is typically defined as a long upholstered seat that features a back and arms and is intended for two or more people. While the term “couch” comes from the Old French couche, meaning to lie down, and sofa has Eastern origins, both are forms of divan, a Turkish word that means an elongated cushioned seat. No matter how you spell it, sofa just means comfort, at least it does today.

In the early days of sofa design, upholstery consisted of horsehair or dried moss. Sofas that originated in countries such as France during the 17th century were more integral to decor than they were to comfort. Like most Baroque furnishings from the region, they frequently comprised heavy, gilded mahogany frames and were upholstered in floral Beauvais tapestry. Today, options abound when it comes to style and material, with authentic leather offerings and classy steel settees. Plush, velvet chesterfields represent the platonic ideal of coziness

Vladimir Kagan’s iconic sofa designs, such as the Crescent and the Serpentine — which, like the sectional sofas of the 1960s created by furniture makers such as Harvey Probber, are quite popular among mid-century modern furniture enthusiasts — showcase the spectrum of style available to modern consumers. Those looking to make a statement can turn to Studio 65’s lip-shaped Bocca sofa, which was inspired by the work of Salvador Dalí. Elsewhere, the furniture of the 1970s evokes an era when experimentation ruled, or at least provided a reason to break the rules. Just about every area of society felt a sudden urge to be wayward, to push boundaries — and buttons. Vintage leather sofas of that decade are characterized by a rare blending of the showy and organic.

With so many options, it’s important to explore and find the perfect furniture for your space. Paying attention to the lines of the cushions as well as the flow from the backrest into the arms is crucial to identifying a cohesive new piece for your home or office.

Fortunately, with styles from every era — and even round sofas — there’s a luxurious piece for every space. Deck out your living room with an Art Deco lounge or go retro with a nostalgic '80s design. No matter your sitting vision, the right piece is waiting for you in the expansive collection of unique sofas on 1stDibs.
