About the Item

George Nakashima 12 drawer dresser from his Origins line of Wiiddicomb furniture.(1958 - 1963 ) The dresser is in East Indian Laurel and has magnificent graining. The front edge of the top measures 89.5" across with a subtle bow from the edge measurements of 20.75" that subtlv curves out to 22.25" at the center point. This detail is one of the many factors that makes George Nakashima"s furniture so interesting. This exceptional piece exemplifies the masterful craftsmanship of George Nakashima, renowned for his philosophy of organic simplicity and reverence for natural wood. Crafted for Widdicomb, this 12-drawer dresser showcases Nakashima's aesthetic harmony between form, function, and natural materials. Constructed using East Indian Laurel veneer combined with solid black walnut in its framework, this dresser highlights Nakashima’s expertise in utilizing contrasting woods to enhance visual and tactile richness. The East Indian Laurel veneer features intricate, swirling grain patterns that bring warmth and depth, while the sturdy black walnut wood accents reinforce the structure's durability. The natural beauty of these woods embodies Nakashima’s philosophy of respecting and celebrating the inherent character of each piece. Designed with twelve spacious drawers, this dresser offers ample storage space while maintaining a sleek, minimalist silhouette. Each drawer is crafted with traditional joinery techniques, ensuring longevity and a quality feel. The finish accentuates the natural grain, allowing the inherent beauty of the materials to shine through. George Nakashima (1905–1990) was a pioneering American woodworker and designer, a leading figure in the American Craft Movement. His work earned numerous accolades, including the American Craft Council Gold Medal and the National Design Award. Nakashima's influence extended through prestigious commissions for institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and UNESCO headquarters, and his furniture remains highly sought after by collectors worldwide. This dresser reflects Nakashima’s deep respect for nature and craftsmanship—a timeless piece embodying his enduring legacy, perfect for those who appreciate artistic, functional furniture rooted in natural materials. The dresser has been restored and is in excellent vintage condition with light wear consistent with its age.
