MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Monumental Custom Granite and Steel Dining Table by Anthony Lumsden, 1970s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A jaw dropping monumental granite slab and steel dining table by famed Los Angeles architect Anthony Lumsden - custom designed and crafted for his Los Angeles home in the 1970s. Sleek, modern yet a subtle statement piece, partially due to its large size for such heavy materials, but also for its vibrant deep granite veining which reflects light in a shimmering fashion. The thick and large granite slab is heavy with no-doubt, the large chromed steel frame is also very heavy in its own regard - a sign of the quality materials he used. To re-create this staggering piece today would be costly and painfully difficult. Acquiring this dining table, which would also make an incredible conference table as well, is a great opportunity for a collector or architecture aficionado to own something truly unique and special - and something that will stand the test of time. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Anthony Lumsden was a famed American architect most noted for his sculptural futuristic designs with numerous projects in Southern California such as the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, often seen in Hollywood films and television shows such as Star Trek Next Generation...

Paul Evans Monumental Patchwork Burl Expandable Dining Table, c 1974, Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This monumental 'Cityscape II' expandable dining table with two leaves by Paul Evans for Directional Furniture, circa 1974, featuring a mesmerizing array of patchwork walnut burl and olive burl, was just refinished in a beautiful French Polish and is signed on one leg as can be seen in the photos. The sophisticated and classy Parsons style is accented with a mesmerizing array of patchwork burlwood (Walnut Burl and Olive Burl in different slightly contrasting stain colors) hand-applied across a lengthy platform of over 129", supported by 4 thick outer legs and 2 center legs which support it's monumental size. Hidden adjustable feet are underneath each leg including the two center supports so that you can adjust the height as needed to accommodate uneven floors. Heavy duty table extenders allow for this monumental size when using one or two of the included leaves. Similarly constructed as the 'Patchwork Copper' series, but this table falls under the Cityscape collection started in 1970 and launched by Directional Furniture in 1971, which options of tiles included chromed steel, brass, and then in 1974 included different wood veneers including burled Walnut and Olive woods. This particular example was marvelously patterned with different burl grain veneers assembled in a patchwork manner and meticulously constructed. We just completed restoration by refinishing it in a beautiful French Polish, which is the most expensive and laborious process of hand applied coats to create a hard and thick protective surface which also accentuates the vivid burl...
