'Les Quatre Eléments' by Pierre Victor Galland
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
Pierre-Victor GALLAND (1822-1892) ‘Les Quatre Eléments’ Four, oil on canvas. France, Circa 1873. Each painting depicting one of the cardinal elements personified as a female figure in the presence of its most evident attribute. Painted with strong light and colour. Earth panel depicts one of the four elements in a compelling fashion with an ascendent female figure robed in flowing drapery with foot and arm extended reaching skyward: each with attendant putti below. Earth is shown swathed in robes of greens and white, with a fanciful foliate headdress of lush leaves and bullrushes. Air leaps effortlessly into the sky draped in blush pink and holding a slender fruiting bough. Fire ascends dramatically into the sky holding forth a flaming torch and draped in bright burnished orange and grey, her image seemingly lit from a fire kindled below by an ignipotent putto. Water suitably draped in billowing azure blue with a translucent undergarment, holds aloft a bubble representing water is portrayed with shimmering translucent wings, an attendant winged putto pulling at her hem. Under the Second Empire, Haussmann’s transformation of Paris went hand in hand with the construction of luxurious mansions for the new haute bourgeois. Gallards extensive work for wealthy patrons such as Lionel de Rothschild and Edouard André, led him to become one of Paris’s most admired and sought-after decorative artists. His fame quickly spread and led him to carry out projects outside the capital for, among others, Baron von Derwies in Nice, Prince Narischkine in Saint Petersburg and William Vanderbilt in the United States. Literature Pierre-Victor Galland, Un Tiepolo français au XIXe siècle. Published in 2006, Somogy, Piscine-musée d'art et d'industrie André Diligent, Musée départemental de l'Oise (Paris, Roubaix, Beauvais). ISBN 978-2-7572-0027-8. (in French) Materials Oil on Canvas Provenance Acquired in France with four other panels (The Four Seasons), at the end of the 19th century by Herman Ossian Armour (1837-1901), businessman, and founder of the Armour Meat Company and American humanist. He brought them back to his USA residence at Fifth Avenue, New York Bequeathed to Mary Armour...

Located in Downingtown, PA
Antique engraving of a Tucano Mangiapepe, by Saverio Manetti Circa 1776 A fine hand colored engraving of a Tuscan Magpie by the Italian artist Saverio Manetti. Manetti drew his work predominantly from real specimens. The work was one of the largest ornithology undertakings to that point in time. Dimensions: 25 inches high x 22 inches wide x 1 1/4 inches deep. (frame); (63.5cm high x 55.88cm). 18 x 14 in. (sheet) Reference: Wikipedia Manetti was born in Brozzi to Giovanni Bernardo and Maria Teresa Nesiscolt of Prague. His early studies were in Florence and later at Pisa where he studied botany under Pier Antonio Micheli. He graduated in medicine in 1745 and worked in Florence. In 1758 he joined the National Medical College where he studied anatomy under Antonio Cocchi (1695–1758), conducting the autopsy of Cocchi. Manetti was Professor of Botany of the "Società Botanica Fiorentina", a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, a Fellow of the Royal Society, learned societies in Göttingen and Montpellier, an Accademico dell'Istituto di Bologna and he maintained scientific contacts with the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus and with the main scientific circles of the second half of the 18th century. He was supervisor of the Orto Botanico di Firenze in Florence from 1749 to 1782 succeeding to Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti and Secretary of the Accademia dei Georgofili. With remarkable organizational effort, he secured the publication of Storia naturale degli uccelli, Natural History of the birds, a monumental work in five volumes illustrated with 600 hand-coloured engravings based on watercolor paintings. The book was commissioned by Maria Luisa, Grand duchess of Tuscany and the first volume was dedicated to Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. The third volume was dedicated to Ferdinando di Brobone and the fourth to Giorgio Nassau Clavering. Antique Limoges Enamel Portrait of Woman and Lap Dog
Located in London, GB
The beautiful enamel plaque was crafted in Limoges, a town in northern France. Limoges has long been associated with the production of high quality enamel wares. While to begin with, in the 12th Century, the town was famous for its applied enamel pieces, religious icons, for example, which were crafted in metal with champlevé enamel ornament, Limoges later, in the 15th century, began to paint onto enamel, creating plaques, plates and ewers, which were both religious and secular in character. These local techniques were revived in the mid-19th century, when items like this enamel portrait painting were produced. This enamel portrait is a half-length depiction of a young woman. While her body is faced slightly to the side, she turns her head to look out directly at the viewer. The woman wears a fine, light pink gown...

A pair of sand pictures by Benjamin Zobel after paintings by de Loutherbourg
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
These extraordinary ‘paintings’ were created using coloured grains of sand rather than paints. Each is after an original painting by Philip James de Loutherbourg. The first scene shows the Battle of Hastings with a central mounted figure, presumably William the Conqueror, with a red plume in his helmet, raising his sword against a fighter on foot. A printed version of this image, shown above, was made by William Bromley. (See the British Museum registration number 1858,1009.115 for a fine impression.) The second scene, composed with a similar central mounted knight with a raised axe (sword in the original) represents Richard the Lionheart in combat against Saladin at the Battle of Acre. In this case the print was made by Anker Smith...

1870s Transitional Plateau Rawhide Parfleche Envelope with Geometric Patterns
Located in Denver, CO
A parfleche container in an envelope form, finely painted in an abstract design. Makes a stunning wall hanging alone or in a grouping with other parfleche or can be placed on a shelf or Stand. This was created by a North American Indian living in the Plateau cultural area - encompassing portions of what is now northern Idaho, western Montana, northeast and central Oregon, eastern Washington and southeast British Columbia. The tribes from this region include Kalispel, Flathead, Kutenai, Palus, Coeur D'Alene and Nez Perce. Parfleches are rawhide containers which were fundamental to the Plains way of life. Functioning essentially as protective travelling suitcases, they enabled the nomadic tribes to effectively pursue buffalo herds and migrate between seasonal camps. So critical were they to a nomadic existence that over 40 tribes are known to have historically produced parfleches. Collectively, these tribes inhabited an area which encompassed the entirety of the Plains, as well as the parts of the Southwest, the Transmontane and Western Plateau regions. Parfleches were, out of necessity, robust and versatile objects. They were designed to carry and protect within them anything from medicinal bundles to seasonal clothing or food. In fact, it was because of the containers’ robusticity and variety that parfleches earned their name in the Anglo world. Derived from parer (to parry or turn aside) and fleche (arrow), the word parfleche was coined by 17th century French Canadian voyageurs and used to describe indigenous objects made from rawhide. Despite their common utilitarian function, parfleches served as one of the major mediums through which Plains Indian tribes could develop their long-standing tradition of painting. In fact, it is in large part due to the parfleche that tribal style emerged. Even though parfleche painting developed simultaneously with beading and weaving, painting as an artistic tradition held particular importance in tribal culture. Believed to have evolved from tattooing, it had always been used as a conduit through which tribal and individual identity could be expressed. As such, many tribeswomen were deeply committed, some even religiously, to decorating their parfleche either with incised or painted motifs that were significant to them and/or the tribe. For some tribes, such as the Cheyenne, the decorative processes which surrounded parfleche production were sacred. For others, it seems that their parfleche designs shared an interesting artistic dialogue with their beadwork, indicating a more casual exchange of design motifs. This particular relationship can be seen in Crow parfleche...

Antique, New and Vintage Decorative Art

Antique, new and vintage decorative art is crucial to personalizing your interior.

Bringing art into your home will help you create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, whether you are expecting to regularly host guests for cocktails in your living room or you are inclined to soak up some “me time” on weekends by curling up with a book in your library. After all, a room isn’t quite complete until you hang some art on the walls.

Choosing a piece of art for your interior is a matter of finding something that resonates with you. You should also consider what will work with your current decor. Keep in mind that a wide range of objects counts as decorative art — antique and vintage prints, paintings, wall-mounted sculptures and more. There is so much to choose from! And art can feel as deeply personal with the vintage posters that promoted your favorite classic films as it can with framed photographs of your loved ones.

Decorative art can set the mood for a room and will typically make for great conversation. When you find wall decor and decorations that speak to you, why not introduce them into your space? It will give you and your guests the opportunity to meaningfully engage with the art every time you see it. You can play with different styles, eras and colors. Mix and match pieces to integrate a refreshing pop of color or create a theme by dedicating a room to a color palette or certain time period. A great way to tie your layout together is to choose wall art that complements your decor and color scheme.

Folk art is an interesting category for its wide range of works across various media and the array of textures it can offer. Paper art is another versatile option because it will be easy to find a home for portraits, collages, drawings and other works in your space. With decorative paper art, you can also get creative with how you arrange your wall art. There are plenty of options that include hanging the works salon-style.

On 1stDibs, find a constantly growing collection of antique and vintage decorative art today.
