Mid-Century Modern Wall Decorations

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

An iconic image by Pop Art master artist Roy Lichtenstein titled "Haystack #6" from his critically acclaimed, somewhat rare, and now hard-to-find Haystack series. The work was done in a limited numbered edition of 100. The work is hand-signed in pencil, dated (1969), and numbered (90/100) by Lichtenstein. James C. Borden Large Cityscape Street Scene Watercolor Painting Cerused Frame
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Absolutely masterful watercolor street scene painting by James C. Borden (1928-2013). Prepare to be awestruck when you lay eyes on this exquisitely detailed watercolor painting by James Borden. The modern painting depicts an ethereal urban scene crowned with summer light. The scale itself is impressive at over four feet wide and three feet high (50.75? x 36.675?). There is just so much to see, so much texture, so many layers. Borden has truly mastered his medium. This is a watercolor cityscape on paper, housed in a cerused wood frame and protected by a pane of acrylic. The painting’s vibrant colors have beautifully preserved. The mastery of this painting is unreal. Borden’s orchestration of color leads the eye through the painting with late afternoon sunlight carving a path through an otherwise gray urban interior. His use of color is narrative. The viewer is being teased away from gloomy city life with a glimmer of sun and nature on the horizon. The nuance in his layering, through elevated passages of transparency… simply brilliant. Be sure to spend time with this painting. There is more to see each and every time you look. Did you notice the Easter egg? Borden used his name as the sign on one of the buildings on the left. The painting is pencil signed “Jim Borden.” James C. Borden studied at the School of the American Academy of Art in Chicago and was a life long painter. Mr. Borden spent much of his life in South Bend...

Vision of Frank Lloyd Wright by Thomas a. Heinz Hardcover Book 1st Edition
Located in North Hollywood, CA
The Vision of Frank Lloyd Wright. by Thomas A. Heinz large heavy hardcover coffee table book. A Complete Guide To The Designs Of An Architectural Genius. Frank Lloyd Wright's career, sometimes tragic, sometimes tempestuous - at all times creative - has been examined and reexamined in numerous studies and articles both during his lifetime and since his death in 1959, which occurred shortly before the completion of his most famous project, New York's Guggenheim Museum. Virtually every structure that Wright built is represented in this extensive survey of his life's work. His genius at architectural design enable him to work out extremely complex buildings in his head and translate them on to paper in a matter of hours, as the famous story of his design presentation of Falling Water illustrates. His work continues to draw great admiration and interest to this day. His often tempestuous and sometimes tragic life and career are given full coverage in this book. Hundreds of photos, both archival and recent chart his amazing work and influence on all who followed. This concise consideration of Wright's life and work not only offers new insights into the character of this complex, powerful and at all times confident personality, but also the architectural legacy he left behind and which exists to this day in the vast number of homes and public buildings photographed...

Rudi Polder Abstract Landschap, Luminist Painting, 1980s Blue Tones
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
Calming and tranquil work by Dutch artist Rudi Polder, known for his beautiful paintings of seascapes in soft pastels. Calming and tranquil work by Dutch artist Rudi Polder, known for his beautiful paintings of seascapes in soft pastels. Rudi Polder is the son of the Hague painter Gerrit Polder. At the age of seventeen Rudi Polder started painting in the naturalistic style of his father Gerrit Polder. After the Second World War, Rudi Polder traveled and drew portraits along the way to earn a living. In 1953 he decided to live in Marseille and rented a studio above the home of the French photographer Albert Detail (1903-1996). In September and October 1953 his first exhibition took place in Bagnols-sur-Cèze with about 50 paintings, the majority of which were painted in Marseille. Rudi Polder married a French woman in France. From this marriage two sons were born, Claude and Serge Polder. During this period, Rudi Polder also traveled to Sweden, Stockholm and Gothenburg, where he sold his paintings. In 1959, this relationship ended in divorce. Rudi Polder returned to the Netherlands to start a new life there and met his life partner Wally Vermij. Rudi Polder and Wally left for France again, where they bought a neglected house in Roquefort-les-Corbières, Languedoc. They converted this house into a refurbished house with studio and exhibition space. His painting style evolved over the years from impressionism (1943-1984) via luminism (1985-1994) to abstract (1986-2006). In January 1957 his works were exhibited at the Lucy Krohg gallery in Paris. Critics praised it, especially George Besson, a French art critic and the founder and director of Cahiers d’Aujourd’hui. The last exhibition in Marseille, before he left for the Netherlands, took place in 1959. In the years that followed, Polder exhibited his works in the Netherlands, Sweden, France and Belgium, among others. “Light on end of sea”, 1984, signed and dated on the front and verso. Medium: Oil on Canvas in original period frame Provenance: The Collection of Municipality The Hague, NL, 1983-2022 Please note: This is a unique vintage item...

Nerone & Patuzzi Zinc Headboard Panel, Italy, 1970s
Located in Hellouw, NL
This Nerone & Patuzzi zinc head panel, produced in the seventies, stands as a remarkable example of artistic expression. Crafted by Nerone Cecciarelli and Giancarlo Patuzzi, masters of working with forms of zinc, this piece showcases a beautiful example of that. The zinc is skillfully treated with acid, resulting in an interplay of light across its surfaces, where smooth and shiny areas contrast with rough and dark textures. The head panel's design features lines that meticulously trace furrows and define distinct surfaces, each possessing a stark and essential geometry. The deliberate arrangement of shapes creates a harmonious composition that captures the viewer's attention. The artist's technique produces a relief effect, adding depth and dimension to the forms on the panel. Within this abstract artwork, one cannot help but notice echoes of avant-garde pioneers like Joan Miró and Picasso...
