If you are appreciative of rare and sculptural antiques then this large mirror / side table could be exactly what you are looking for. The quality and the patina of the large, fighting phoenix bird and dragon frame is second to none and for it to be in such good condition is truly amazing. It takes a special craftsman and artist to create such a piece, the type that you simply don't find anymore in this day and age. Because of the subject matter and the great quality, the first name that comes to mind would be that of master sculptor Gabriel Viardot. However, Viardot virtually made all of his dragon sculptures in the Chinoiserie style and this piece is clearly more European. In terms of the quality of the carvings, whomever created this unique piece of furniture certainly was no less artistic or skilled as Viardot, because this piece really is among the best you will ever see. The way in which this hand carved wooden phoenix is holding the shield-like beveled mirror in its claws and the way the dragon seems to try to fend off the enormous and fierce phoenix is both dramatic and impressive at the same time and it will never seize to amaze you or anyone visiting. Especially when you see the detailed carvings and the true size of this work of beauty in real life, you will be stunned. A circa 1725 oil on canvas portrait of Louis George Simpert, as Hereditary Prince, the future Margrave of Baden-Baden (Deutsch: Ludwig Georg Simpert, Markgraf von Baden-Baden) portrayed one-quarter length in powdered wig and wearing ceremonial armor and crimson sash newly fitted in a period molded giltwood frame with bead-and-reel inner border from the Eli Wilner collection. Canvas measures 24.5" x 19.25". A related, but later portrait of circa 1735, attributed to the same unknown painter, is held in the collection of Lichtenthal Abbey, Baden-Baden.
Biography:
Louis George or Ludwig Georg Simpert, Margrave of Baden-Baden, born June 7, 1702 at Ettlingen Palace was the son of Louis William, Margrave of Baden-Baden and his wife, Princess Sibylle of Saxe-Lauenburg. Hereditary Prince of Baden-Baden from birth, at the death of his father in 1707, he succeeded as Margrave of Baden-Baden at the age of four. As such, his mother was regent of Baden-Baden until he reached his majority on 22 October 1727 at the age of 25. He married Maria Anna of Schwarzenberg April 8, 1721 at Český Krumlov Castle. The couple were the parents of four children, of whom only one survived infancy. After the death of the first Maria Anna in 1755, he married the Princess Maria Anna Josepha of Bavaria on July 10, 1755; the daughter of Charles VII, Holy Roman Emperor and his Austrian wife Archduchess Maria Amalia. The second marriage remained childless. Due to his passion for hunting instead of military service, he became known as "Jägerlouis", "hunter Louis", a play on his father's nickname of Türkenlouis ("Turk Louis") due to his famous heroics against the Turkish army at the Siege of Vienna...

We are by no means connoisseurs when it comes to antique paintings, but we have seen enough antique paintings to know when something is special, decorative and truly inspiring and interesting to look at. And the large size of this antique work of art, makes it impressive too. Also, because it must have taken one very skilled painter an awful lot of time (probably weeks, if not months) to hand-paint this famous religious scene. Following that apparition, by the way, St. James returned to Judea, where he was beheaded by King Herod Agrippa the first (in the year AD 44). Judging from the skillfully painted individuals in the Renaissance Style and the striking and lively colors, we believe, this late 1800s painting is the work of a true artisan. This work of religious art on the back reads 'Sacerdote Salvatore Rosa, Dipinse 1889' which means Priest Salvatore Rosa, Painted 1889. This priest clearly had a god given talent and god bless him for having created this masterpiece.
Apart from some minor imperfections this large and nostalgic painting is in very good condition and we believe it will look particularly great in a church, monastery or chapel. At the same time, a one of a kind antique like this will ofcourse also look great atop the stairwell of a mansion or in the entry hall of a French castle etc. We don't know the 'exact' value of this large size antique painting...
