Cartier Sapphire and Yellow Gold Double Clips, c. 1935

About the Item

Art Deco pair of double clip dress clips, by Cartier, post 1935. It has been said that one cannot understand fully art history without appreciating the workings of social economic and political history itself. In no example may this thought be more applicable than in the last half of 1930's in Europe with the tragic empowerment of totalitarianism in Germany, Italy and Spain. With firms like Van Cleef opening their New York operation in 1929 (Cartier had done so in 1910), it was easy to understand that the turmoil in Europe and Great Britain would compel these two firms with Tiffany to make America the remaining bastion of new Jewelry design even if only temporarily. Late Art Deco dress clips such as ours by Cartier would represent just one example of America's dominance in design. These stylized, scrolled and otherwise undulation spade shapes double clip brooches are presented in an iconic for by one of the greatest interpreters of style of the first half of the 20th century but in this case in a decidedly American composition. In 14K they offered here in an authentic vintage Cartier tooled leather box, possibly spirited quickly to New York after 1935, stamped "Cartier made in France". The Cartier box, although not fitted for a double clip brooch came with the clips and we extend the box to the new owner. Each clip is prong set with 3 Ceylon sapphires which collectively for both clips weigh a bit more than .66 cts. The clips also weigh exactly 20.95 grams. Set end to end exactly they are 2.7/8th inches. With a width of about 1 inch. Or, if they are placed as off-set tamdens with one slightly above the over, they will become a dapper geometric rhomboid figure of about 2.3/4 inches on a blazer or any solid fabric. These clips are authentic, versatile and most of all a chic statement exemplifying the good taste of the wearer. Finally, this pair of clips is quite special in an unexpected way because they represent the circumstance - rarely found - of each clip having consecutive inventory numbers. As well as each being signed, Cartier. All items sold are accompanied by a detailed appraisal by our gemologist, as well as all original GIA certificates, if specified in listing. As always, our pieces arrive in a presentation box, gift-wrapped.

  • Cartier Art Deco Diamond & Sapphire Clip Brooch/Hair Barrette, c. 1920
    By Cartier
    Located in Aspen, CO
Cartier, signed and numbered, Art Deco Diamond and Sapphire Platinum Antique Brooch and Hair Barrette, Signed and numbered by Cartier, this Art Deco jewel is magnificent. The natural unheated sapphires (probably from Burma), are a bright vivid blue, they are estimated to weigh 4.5 cts. The diamonds are all well matched, estimated to be F in color (colorless), and very, very slightly included (VVS) in clarity. They are estimated to weigh .98 cts. This piece can be worn either as a brooch or as a hair barrette. Leave it to the great jeweler Cartier to design a piece that can slide through fabric smoothly and easy to wear in the hair and, because this clip is slightly curved it will hold any thickness of hair. The two pinstems squeeze together and each fit into its holder making the barrettes quite comfortable. This Cartier Art Deco diamond and unheated Burma sapphire platinum brooch/hair barrette was purchased with an architecturally identical but very slightly larger ruby brooch (1/16th inch longer, and 1/8th inch wider). This very slightly smaller sapphire Cartier brooch measures 1- 7/8th in length, and one half of an inch in width. The diamond and unheated Burma Ruby brooch...

  • Retro Cartier 14K Yellow and Rose Gold Pyramid Dress Clips
    By Cartier
    Located in Venice, CA
These 14k gold Cartier dress clips are a classic Retro pyramid design. The clips consist of half-circles of yellow and rose gold in four alternating bands—a perfect example of the streamlined and machinelike motifs seen during the Industrial Revolution that influenced retro designs. The backs of the clips contain sturdy pins that open up as clips and are strong enough to pierce thick fabric. The clips can be used for their original purpose, or for a contemporary look, worn as a pendant on a thick chain. Dress clips came into fashion in the 1920’s and were extremely popular until they were replaced by the singular brooch of the 1950’s. During their heyday, dress clips were an essential jewelry staple among women, who were influenced by the movie stars and fashion icons they saw on the big screen. They were worn in pairs along the neckline or straps of a dress, or could be used to clip furs and other accessories in place. The clips are marked with “Cartier” and “14K” and contain the serial number. They measure approximately 1.5” x .75”. Combined, they weigh 13 grams. The pair can be worn as clips, brooches, or as a pendant facing multiple directions. Pictured here on a Vintage 14K Gold Omega...
