Large Oil Painting Color field, Minimalist, Abstract Expressionist John Zinsser
Located in Surfside, FL
John Zinsser (American, b. 1961) Iron City, 1997 oil on canvas signed John Zinsser, titled and dated (verso) 72 x 60 inches Done in bright vibrant shades of red. American artist John Zinsser was born in New York City in 1961 and studied art, art history and literature at Yale University (where he did his senior thesis on Andy Warhol). He co-founded Journal of Contemporary Art in 1987 and lectures at The New School. He has had over 40 solo shows in the U.S. and Europe, and is known in Europe for his association with monochrome painters of a previous generation. Zinsser has been a devotee of postwar Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism for decades. A native New Yorker, he came of age as an artist during the late 1980s and early 1990s alongside other now established abstract painters, including Richmond Burton, Gail Fitzgerald, Daniel Levine, Carl Ostendarp, Kate Shepherd, Cary Smith, Dan Walsh, Mary Weatherford, and Stephen Westfall, among others. Zinsser’s material paintings and conceptual drawings often pay homage to, expand upon, and subvert earlier precedents in NYC’s painting history, from Abstract Expressionism to Radical Painting to Post-Modernism. Zinsser interned for the architect Peter Eisenman, when he was director of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies in New York City. "Lexington, " Larry Zox, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Brown Modernism
Located in New York, NY
Larry Zox Lexington, 1973 Acrylic on canvas 61 x 49 inches Provenance: Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York Janie C. Lee Gallery, Houston, Texas Private Collection, Greenwood Village, Colorado Exhibited: New York, Andre Emmerich Gallery, Larry Zox: New Paintings, March 10 - 28, 1973. Houston, Texas, Janie C. Lee Gallery, Larry Zox, February - April, 1974. A painter who played an essential role in the Color Field discourse of the 1960s and 1970s, Larry Zox is best known for his intensely and brilliantly colored geometric abstractions, which question and violate symmetry. Zox stated in 1965: “Being contrary is the only way I can get at anything.” To Zox, this position was not necessarily arbitrary, but instead meant “responding to something in an examination of it [such as] using a mechanical format with X number of possibilities." What he sought was to “get at the specific character and quality of each painting in and for itself,” as James Monte stated in his introductory essay in the catalogue for Zox’s 1973–74 solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Zox also at times used a freer, more intuitive method, while maintaining coloristic autonomy, which became increasingly important to him in his later career. Zox began to receive attention in the 1960s, when he was included in several groundbreaking exhibitions of Color Field and Minimalist art, including Shape and Structure (1965), organized by Henry Geldzahler and Frank Stella for Tibor de Nagy, New York, and Systemic Painting (1966), organized by Lawrence Alloway for the Guggenheim Museum. In 1973–74, the Whitney’s solo exhibition of Zox’s work gave recognition to his significance in the art scene of the preceding decade. In the following year, he was represented in the inaugural exhibition of the Hirshhorn Museum, which acquired fourteen of his works. Zox was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended the University of Oklahoma and Drake University, and then studied under George Grosz at the Des Moines Art Center. In 1958, Zox moved to New York, joining the downtown art scene. His studio on 20th Street became a gathering place for artists, jazz musicians, bikers, and boxers. He occasionally sparred with visiting fighters. He later established a studio in East Hampton, a former black smithy used previously by Jackson Pollock. Zox’s earliest works were collages consisting of pieces of painted paper stapled onto sheets of plywood. He then produced paintings that were illusions of collages, including both torn- and trued-edged forms, to which he added a wide range of strong hues that created ambiguous surfaces. Next, he omitted the collage aspect of his work and applied flat color areas to create more complete statements of pure color and shape. He then replaced these torn and expressive edges with clean and impersonal lines that would define his work for the next decade. From 1962 to 1965, he produced his Rotation series, at first creating plywood and Plexiglas reliefs, which turned squares into dynamic polygons. He used these shapes in his paintings as well, employing white as a foil between colors to produce negative spaces that suggest that the colored shapes had only been cut out and laid down instead of painted. The New York Times noted in 1964: “The artist is hip, cool, adventurous, not content to stay with the mere exercise of sensibility that one sees in smaller works.” In 1965, he began the Scissors Jack series, in which he arranged opposing triangular shapes with inverted Vs of bare canvas at their centers that threaten to split their compositions apart. In several works from this series, Zox was inspired by ancient Chinese water vessels...

Tim Nordin "VIII.1 Study" Signed Acrylic on Canvas Panel, Frameless Presentation
Located in Miami, FL
"VIII.1 Study" BY TIM NORDIN (B. 1945) Acrylic on Canvas over Panel ⚜ Signed ⚜ Frameless Display A VIBRANT STUDY OF COLOR, TRANSPARENCY & STRUCTURE A rare and original acrylic on canvas over panel, Tim Nordin’s "VIII.1 Study" (1976) is a striking example from his renowned Transparent Sumi Brush Mark series. This work is defined by layered organic strokes of deep blues, vibrant greens, and subtle earth tones, forming a rhythmic interplay of color and light. Nordin’s distinctive brushwork creates a composition that shifts dynamically depending on light and perspective, a hallmark of his innovative approach. His technique results in an immersive, pulsating visual field—where each mark remains distinct yet seamlessly integrates into the whole. This meticulous layering and structured spontaneity connect his work to Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, and Color Field painting. This highly collectible piece was exhibited in Nordin’s 1982 Palm Springs Desert Museum exhibition and remains an essential work for collectors seeking dynamic gestural abstraction and structured color play. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Highly Collectible – A rare hand-signed original by Tim Nordin ✓ Exhibited Work – Featured in Nordin’s 1982 Palm Springs Desert Museum exhibition ✓ Optical Depth & Color Play – A dynamic surface with layered transparency & gestural brushwork ✓ Historical Provenance – From the Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Ricardo Sanchez, acquired directly from the artist ✓ Frameless Display – Ready to Hang – Presented in its original artist-preferred format ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: VIII.1 Study ▸ Artist: Tim Nordin (b. 1945) ▸ Medium: Acrylic on Canvas over Panel ▸ Year of Creation: 1976 ▸ Signature: Hand-signed, titled, and dated on verso ▸ Provenance: Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Ricardo Sanchez, acquired directly from the artist ▸ Country of Origin: United States ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Image Size: 12 x 12.125 inches — ◻︎ Panel Size: 12 x 12.125 x 1.625 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent – Vibrant colors with well-preserved surface clarity ▸ Framing: Frameless Display (Artist’s Standard Presentation) – Ready to Hang INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Document ✓ Excerpts from the 1982 Palm Springs Desert Museum Exhibition Catalog THE ARTIST: Tim Nordin is an American abstract painter best known for his exploration of transparency, repetition, and structured mark-making. His work draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Mark Rothko, Sam Francis, Josef Albers, Kazimir Malevich, and the Optical Art movement pioneered by Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. While elements of his work reflect the gestural expressiveness of Abstract Expressionism, his approach to composition and structure aligns with Color Field painters such as Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler. Born in 1945, Nordin traveled extensively before settling in California, where he studied fine arts at Cerritos College and later earned his MFA at Claremont Graduate School, concentrating on printmaking and experimental painting techniques. Early in his career, he experimented with plexiglass, vinyl, and alternative surfaces, seeking ways to push the boundaries of traditional painting. By the 1970s and 1980s, Nordin became known for his Transparent Sumi Brush Mark series, in which he developed a meticulous method of layering individual brushstrokes to form structured, organic compositions. These works, featuring veils of fluid color and precise gestural marks, evoke the optical depth and rhythmic movement found in Bridget Riley’s Op Art...

Contemporary Pattern and Decoration piece, The original movement was championed by the gallery owner Holly Solomon. The P&D movement wanted to revive an interest in minor forms such as patterning which at that point was equated with triviality. The prevailing negative view of decoration was one not generally shared by non-Western cultures, The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Miriam Schapiro, Robert Zakanitch were early proponents of this style. The artist lives and works in New York City.
